Subject: 100 Guitar Heroes Poll (Part 6 of 10)
Date Posted: November 04 2019 at 00:31
This is the sixth of a 10-part alphabetical poll to determine who's the greatest guitarist of all time across all genres of music. When the results have all come in, I'll put the top two leaders of each of the ten polls into a face-off poll to determine the overall winner of the Top 100 guitar heroes.  I'll also enable multiple voting in the final face-off poll. Smile
An easy choice for me this time - Brian May!

The Top 100 Guitar Heroes list is supplied courtesy of Guitarist Magazine.

there was a time where everyon started out as a shadows apache band. that is largly thaned to Hank Marvin, Steve Howes sound isnlargly influenced by the Shadows. hes tone and feel for twang. So Hank is probably the most ilportant guitarist in the list.

It is Alex not Akek Lifeson. John Mayer huh. Ridiculous.

Sorry about the typo error with Alex Lifeson. It was early in the morning when I typed out the poll and I was still bleary-eyed, having just woken up. That's my excuse anyway. Smile

I would have included John Mayall in preference to John Mayer too if it had been my own personal poll. Smile

Of the ones I know in that list I'd go for Alex Lifeson

Thanks Cristi. I know that now after looking him up in my Guitarist Magazine book, but I'm not a big fan of Rush as you've probably guessed, although I've always liked "Spirit of Radio".

Again went with a shredding type, this type it's Yngwie Malmsteen, but hear me out... this guy could be as influential to teenagers picking up their axe as anyone since Jason Becker / EVH days. I know Malmsteen is over the top, but he certainly plays more than blitzing staccatos in 220 BPM - I like how he tries to incorporate baroque into his playing and pays respect to J.S. Bach, that alone is worth a praise.

I could see myself voting for Brian May - he lost some respect in my eyes, but I can't deny he succeeded with creating his very own style. That's mightily important.

One of Brian May's finest moments - playing "God Save the Queen" on the roof of Buckingham Palace.

Alex Lifeson 1 inch in front of Malmsteen

Lukather from this batch. Saw him live a few years ago. Simply amazing. If you think he's just some pop guitarist with Toto you haven't been paying attention.

I thought Steve Lukather was just some Pop guitarist with Toto, but even so, I still think he's a great guitarist, especially after seeing him performing Live in concert from Paris (circa 1990) on YouTube. Smile

he has recorded or been part of nearly 800 releases, as a session guitarist

From this batch, Alex has been chosen.  No one else need even apply.

I would have replaced most anyone on the list (not Alex of course) with the relatively unknown Lionel Loueke.  As shredders go, I'd be inclined to take Tony MacAlpine before Yngvie.

I went for Marr. I haven't thought about a lot of these guys in a while though.

If it is, then it's an anagram for a very odd word!

I just looked up "Zivoj" on Google, but I'm still none the wiser. Is he a guitar hero I've never heard of?

Another glaring omission on the part of Guitarist Magazine, along with Lindsey Buckingham, Robert Fripp. Steve Hillage, John Mayall and many other guitarists I could mention. Smile

Frank Zappa hasn't been left out of the poll. He's coming along in Poll #10 as I'm sure you must know by now. Wink

This list should have also had Jim Matheos of Fates Warning.

It's funny how the one guitarist I'd never previously heard of in this poll has picked up the most votes.  There must be a lot of Rush fans here. Smile

It's good to see Brian May has finally picked up enough votes to put him through to the final face-off round.

Steve Lukather is excellent! Not only with Toto but as a session guitarist on other albums/artists. Brian May also think is brilliant.
But went Alex Lifeson for sheer depth of catalog and how his sound has evolved over the past 40+ yrs.
