Subject: 100 Guitar Heroes Poll (Part 2 of 10)
Date Posted: October 27 2019 at 03:11
This is the second of a 10-part alphabetical poll to determine who's the greatest guitarist of all time across all genres of music. When the results have all come in, I'll put the winners of each of the ten polls into a face-off poll to determine the overall winner of the Top 100 guitar heroes. If two guitarists finish in joint first place in the poll, then I'll include them both in the final face-off poll.
An easy choice for me this time. I'm voting for "God" in this second poll.
The only guitarist I hadn't previously heard of in this poll is Dimebag, from the band, Pantera
The Top 100 Guitar Heroes list is supplied courtesy of Guitarist Magazine.

I love Eric Clapton BUT Larry Carlton gets my vote here.

Al Di Meola/Clapton/The Edge very even to me, all great in their separate way.
If I Have to pick one today Al-Di (Romantic Warrior was the tie breaker )
Besides a single song or two Kurt Cobain was never my thing - love Pearl Jam a lot more from the period.
Never checked out Larry Carlton deeply - although i know good album where he is listed as studio M.
Ry Cooder, same as above
Dimebag Darrell - get away.
Cropper/Ford - never heard about those before.

From the list, Larry Carlton, with DiMeola running a very close second and Honorable Mention to the great bluesman, Albert Collins.
Notable omissions from this stretch of the alphabet include:
Larry Coryell
Herb Ellis
Rik Emmett
Tal Farlow
all of which could easily displace at least half of those on the list. I mean, Cobain? Really?

I think the list is composed by a music magazine's "top 100 guitarists"

Clapton I guess.
The Edge and Cobain guitar heroes? I giggled...

^^ I voted for Eric Clapton too and Kurt Cobain definitely wouldn't feature on my own personal list of "guitar heroes", and neither would Dimebag, because I'd never heard of him before. I do like The Edge though, mainly for his edginess.

Dimebag Darrell was the guitarist of Pantera and for me (and I imagine others) one of the reasons to listen to the band.
The Edge being edgy? I can't imagine that.

Clapton gets the vote from me since I am a long time fan and love his variable style, sometimes subtle, sometimes right in your face.
Al DiMeola gets second place for me and Larry Carlton gets third.
The Edge is very influential and has a mostly singular style, which he pretty much made popular among alternative artists, and you always hear his influence in a lot of music. However, at least with the music of U2, it's kind of a one-trick pony. Let's just say he was influential, but no where near as good as his co-stars Jimmy Page and Jack White on the documentary "It's Going to Get Loud". The both of them are in a different league than The Edge, and it is very obvious on that documentary.

If you want to know who Dimebag Darrell was you should check out his solo on "Floods", by Pantera

I've got a couple of Larry Carlton's solo albums and he even sings on one of them.
I would have voted for Larry Carlton if he wasn't in the same poll as Eric Clapton and The Edge.

Cobain never could play guitar. A guitar hero?

Clapton was one of my first guitar heroes and at one time I had everything he ever recorded (up through the early 90s), but he's decidedly second tier for me now. Sure, he can rock (although he really hasn't in decades) or be subtle, but it's still pretty narrow in focus; always blues based rock with little breadth. His few forays outside his core competence have been disappointing

The Edge, aside from being a ridiculous self gloss, is all about engineering and production. When it comes to actual ability on the fretboard, he'd be at the bottom of this....or any other list... that didn't also include Cobain.

I checked out this list and Allan Holdsworth is not even mentioned. Holdsworth was the most innovative guitarist ever. So without him in this poll, this is worthless.

Curt Cobain is not my idea of a guitar hero either, but he just happened to be included in Guitarist Magazine's Top 100 guitarists.

I know Larry Carlton is far more technically accomplished than The Edge, but given the choice, I'd rather listen to U2 than Larry Carlton.

Your polls are great. No complaint. If there's any complaint, it's with Guitarist Magazine, who seems to feel a need to pander to their pimplefaced self identified disaffected grunge wannabe audience.

You mentioned Allan Holdsworth is not even mentioned, but I just checked my 100 Guitar Heroes list from Guitarist Magazine and he IS included in the list, right after Jimi Hendrix, so don't worry, he'll be coming up in the next but one list.

Johnny Fean (Horslips) anyone?.... fellow "Paddy", The Edge, is a definite follower and admirer of Johnny but they are really chalk and cheese when it comes to their playing styles. Johnny wins hands down (IMHO).

the guitar solo on Kid Charlemagne alone is enough to earn Carlton the vote, it is the best solo in a jazz/rock setting

Al Di Meola is doing surprisingly well in the poll. He's now drawn level with Eric Clapton on seven votes each.

Clapton is god.........
Love how people are trashing you for the list and don't read where it came from.....LOL
On Cobain in general, why on earth Guitar Mag lists him as a top 100 is INSANE. Simply strumming a guitar in grunge mode does nothing, his only fame was the beginning lick on Smells Like Teen Spirit, very memorable but hardly great.

Kurt Cobain does nothing at all for me either and there's no way I'd include him in my own personal list of guitar heroes. There are far more worthy guitar heroes (such as Robert Fripp) who Guitarist Magazine could have included in their Top 100 list.
I agree. Eric Clapton is God! I'm planning to put the Top 2 guitarists with the most votes in each poll through to the final face-off round, so I'm glad to say Clapton will make it through to the final round.

I'll gladly cast a vote on Al Di Meola.
Guitar master in every sense of the word. Impeccable cross-picking, very succesful in demanding flamenco music as well as jazz/fusion. Influential in his niche, always dealing with cerebral and awe-inspiring music. What's not to like? The only thing he lacks is recognition, but who cares.
I'm glad The Edge is left behind.

^^ I think The Edge has lost his edge after falling way behind with just one vote.
