Subject: 100 Guitar Heroes Poll (Part 1 of 10)
Date Posted: October 24 2019 at 05:43
This is the first of a 10-part alphabetical poll to determine who's the greatest guitarist of all time across all genres of music. When the results have all come in, I'll put the winners of each of the ten polls into a face-off poll to determine the overall winner of the Top 100 guitar heroes. Star

I'm voting for Ritchie Blackmore in this first poll. Thumbs Up

The Top 100 Guitar Heroes list is supplied courtesy of Guitarist Magazine. Smile

Originally, I was going to post four polls with 25 great guitarists in each poll, but that would have made it almost impossible to choose a favourite. Smile

it's between Benson and Blackmore.
Benson, he won't get many votes anyway.

I would have voted for George Benson too if Ritchie Blackmore hadn't been in the poll. He's a founder member of three of my favourite bands:- Deep Purple; Rainbow; & Blackmore's Night. Heart

Admittedly, there were three guitarists who I hadn't previously heard of in this poll:- Matt Bellamy of Muse; James Dean Bradfield of The Manic Street Preachers; & Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.

Thank you Captain Obvious, if you hadn't told me who Ritchie blackmore was, I would have never known.

What do you mean you did not know three guitarists in your own poll? So basically, these lists of guitarists are not yours, do you take them from some place on the internet and paste them here? Wacko

As Chopper quite rightly points out, I mentioned at the top of this thread in my first post that "The Top 100 Guitar Heroes list is supplied courtesy of Guitarist Magazine." Wink

I didn't think for one moment that anyone here wouldn't know who Ritchie Blackmore was. LOL

Captain Obvious would make a good name for a band, although I might be thinking of Captain Beyond. Tongue

From that list Beck...sadly I don't even know 2 or 3 of those players.

Belew is the most versatile and my favorite from the list, though I enjoy George Benson very much for his smooth style.

Lots of good ones there, but none in my top tier. I trew out a first vote for Chet Atkins, who I wouldn't expect to get much traction on this site.

In reality to different to compare - but will vote for Belew as the one i listen to much more that the others.

Belew is innovative but overall I have to go for Beck, I'd give my right arm to be able to play guitar like that.

Out of this first 10, Beck seals it for me. Benson next, then Adrian, then Blackmore.

It's in alphabetical order. So he won't be in the next 9.

Bonamassa is a "disciple" of Barre. See here:

I just noticed that this is in alpha order.

Greats I love who didn't make the list (those in bold, I would have placed at the top of this list):

John Abercrombe
Jan Akkerman
Tuck Andress
George Barnes
Martin Barre
Peter Bernstein
Ed Bickert
Tommy Bolin
Lenny Breau
Jimmy Bruno
Buckethead
Michael Burks
Kenny Burrell
Charlie Byrd
Eric Clapton
Vivian Campbell

^^ Why can't you believe you're saying that? ^^ I was hoping Ritchie Blackmore was going to receive at least one more vote in the poll to draw level with Adrian Belew of King Crimson before I post Part 2 of the guitar heroes poll, but I promise I'll post Part 2 tomorrow whatever happens. Smile

This poll is going to be a close-run thing:- Jeff Beck has just drawn level with Adrian Belew on six votes each with Ritchie Blackmore close behind on five votes. Just one more vote could swing it either way. Smile

Also only realized then, that the late, great Stuart Adamson (Skids, Big Country) is also missing from this alphabetical list of guitar heroes.

Once described by John Peel as the "new Hendrix"; Adamson was certainly an absolute genius at his craft.

Chet. Beck and Belew are cool, but Chet's additions to guitar technique are a little more impressive.

Adamson's virtuosity is better represented here in the track Devil's Decade from the Bill Nelson produced masterpiece album The Absolute Game....please listen to the whole track

Roman Bunka is the guitar player of the German band Embryo and definitely my favorite rock guitarist. the solo in the "blues section" of this track is my favorite rock guitar solo of all times:

some other great solos of him:

and here some live footage of him:

the best rock guitarist no-one knows. Friede and I have tried to propagate him on this site, but apparently unsuccessfully

Very difficult poll.

I'm giving this to Ritchie Blackmore though. He certainly was a cutting edge guitarist in hard rock era (between Cream and Van Halen) with a bag of terrific riffs, guns blazing solos, HUGE kinetic force, slashing/lacerating guitar tone (on a Gibson ES-335 and a f***kin Strat!!!), blending classical with blues rock in a very good taste... mammoth influence on hard rock, heavy, power or even thrash metal... and then he reinvented himself and went Renaissance, with much success!

Other reasons
- my very first guitar idol, you can't buy that
- legendary persona, epitome of 70s rock star
- always had it his way

Jeff Beck deserves all respect, especially on a good day... but he wasn't that consistent and he had troubles with songwriting.
