Prog is pretty much a dead heat between Rush/Moving Pictures and Dream Theater/Images and Words Non prog would be a jazz album, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers/Moanin' Non prog rock- The Who/Who's Next or Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell

Brain Salad Surgery non prog is really difficult because there is so much crossover stuff that flirts with both universes ( ie Kate Bush , Supertramp, Muse etc) so trying to think of something that just isn't even prog related is tricky. I think I will go with Bat For Lashes ( the lovely Natasha Khan) so.. The Haunted Man

It seems to me that most people have chosen prog-related albums as their favourite non-prog album. I specifically excluded prog-related, proto-prog, or anything that I consider to be prog, prog-related, or proto-prog, even though they are not on this site. For me, choosing a favourite album from the prog-related category is difficult as there are so many to choose from, and none rise much above others that might be considered. However, I will tentatively choose "Master Of Reality" (Black Sabbath). ------------- No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. Katy Lied is a darn good album, but I slightly prefer The Royal Scam(which is my second favorite SD album right behind Countdown). I hold all of their first 7 albums in very high regard though. As I've said many times already on this forum, I'd put those 7 albums against the first 7 by ANY other music artist ever.

Interesting, For non-prog, three Black Sabbath albums have now been cited. I don't think I would have predicted so much appreciation for Sabbath among progheads.

For me, make that seven or even eight album run. I like "Technical Ecstasy" about as much as the previous six albums, and I also like "Never Say Die!". After that, I lost interest in Black Sabbath, though in more recent years, I've been playing them more often. I recently listened to "Heaven And Hell", but it sounded to me more like a Rainbow album than a Black Sabbath album. I've not listened an any of their more recent albums. ------------- No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. During my young teenage years, Black Sabbath were my favourite group. It wasn't really until my late teenage years that I started listening to prog in earnest. I don't think it was because I wasn't exposed to prog when I was younger, but would've considered much of prog to be too "folky" to have appealed to me. Even the prog I did like I liked because it rocked. Also, even during my younger years, I was never really too far away from prog. For example, a favourite song when I was young was "Hold Your Head Up" (Argent), and my favourite part was the keyboard solo in the middle (which was disappointingly removed in the radio-edit version). ------------- No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands.  Although I don't have many non-prog (excluding prog-related, etc) albums to choose from, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is an album that I like a lot (I think of it as a masterpiece). What is your favourite track? There are four tracks in particular that are rather special to me: Breaking the Girl Suck My Kiss Under the Bridge Sir Psycho Sexy Of these, my favourite is a choice between "Breaking the Girl" and "Sir Psycho Sexy". ------------- No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. OK, really, I wouldn't really know which is my non-prog fav album, I only know that my very favourite album is Wish you were Here. Perhaps if I had to go with a non prog album, I could think of something like "Mother Earth" by Within Temptations or "Secret of the Runes" by Therion. |

Fav prog: Brain Salad Surgery I was going to put in Haggard - Tales of Ithiria as fav non-prog (since it was my fav album prior to dropping into the prog tastes), but to my honest surprise, they are actually listed on PA. Which I mean, fair enough, I can see why, but didn't expect So I'll probably go with Electric Wizard- Come My Fanatics for fav non-prog then

I still have got to get their latest... however, for me they never got near Mother Earth again... that one's something special, then they got gradually poppier, until they hardly were even metal on their previous album. Still, they always come out with some high quality material, whichever stile they choose to play. I guess that's what happens when they take their time between each release. |

'Astral Weeks' is one of my favourite albums. Is it non-prog? It's hard for me to think of it as not experimental, but I daresay it's not prog-rock. |

I also believe it's a masterpiece. This, along with 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn', was one of the last CDs I bought years ago (sort of completing the ones I've always loved but for some reason never owned). A few years ago I took it to an old friends' reunion to the Lake where we used to spend our summers in the 90's (then and there, 'Suck my kiss' sounded every night at the local Disco).  I put it on an old radio outdoors somewhere at the middle of our little barbecue at night  and it went inflamed!  it sounded all way through between drinks. Unforgettable memories with this one.Well you know.. favorites keep changing, 'Suck my kiss' of course was one at one point. As was 'I could have lied'. Now I'd say: The Power of Equality (always a fave) The Righteous & the Wicked Blood Sugar Sex Magik (love the drums) Apache Rose Peacock Sir Psycho Sexy |

I thing they have a few post Mother Earth that are quite good. However, I definitely found the most recent release to be a major disappointment. Totally without inspiration.

I have been listening to prog for shorter than 20 years and Close to the Edge has emerged as the clear favorite out of all of the prog I have listened to. Relayer wouldn't even make my top 10, but it's still a really great album.

How could someone have a favourite Prog album that they considered not as good as what they thought was the best Prog album? I agree. When I rate my top 25 albums of all time, this always gets a place. A perfect album for me. Upbeat superbly crafted songs, stellar vocals (both Rob and Adrian) their harmonies kick ass, incredible musicianship, and the recording sounds killer.
