that might be fun.. but the honest truth is so few of those really rank at all in my personal favorites in the first place. By quick count..  only 5 of the 20 might find a place in my list of 20

Does "rearrange" include kicking some of them out and replacing them with others that I think should belong there but for some reason (usually because they are too little known) didn't make it there?

I doubt it..  otherwise it would have been.. make your own 20 which we've seenless countless threads asking to do just that.  Just rearranging.. which I guess we could do.. top to bottom.. just with the cavaet that .. well.. most of thee albums ..while 'great'..  aren't what floats our personal boats man...

There are some I would kick out, and I would definitely not have more than one album for each artist (that's nothing but fanboyism; no artist is that great, not even VdGG), so about half of them would have to go.

Hi,

PASS.

That list is way too commercial for me, and at least 10 of my choices would be material that most of you will laugh at and think it is stupid, and will never listen to it ... except Micky, of course!

I'm not sure whether even one of these is in my personal top 20 (although I like many of them a lot) but I don't mind. The game is to rank these. And I'm fine with that. I don't need to put my personal favourites up in every ranking of anything...

I'm just scratching my head as to how Moving Pictures can be #20 when it blows 3/4 of that list out of the water. Is it Opposite Day today?

That album is actually incredible imo, def deserves its place in the top 20 maybe even higher. Mindblowingly good.

I’m not a huge fan of it, I like hemispheres a lot better, Tom Sawyer through the camera eye is all great. But the last two songs don’t do it for me.

It's not my favorite Rush album either (I prefer A Farewell to Kings) but even so it's better than 3/4 of this list. Vital Signs is one of my faves. So quirky in its 80s style. Everybody needs reverse polarity.

Vital Signs is my least favorite from the album. I just don't find it very memorable. Witch Hunt at least has a very cool synth in it.

I wonder if that's where they got the name for their next album(kind of like the "relayer" part on tfto). I will say this though "vital signs" at least sounds like a preview for the next album since it sounds more like something on signals than the rest of MP(imo).

Vital Signs is the Devo's "Whip it!" of prog. I really think you should elevate from the norm here.

If I use an ounce of perception, and speaking of the function and the form, Vital Signs even has that cool octaves jumping riff a la The Knack's My Sharona.

I never noticed. I always considered "my Sharona" kind of an accidental prog song though.

Accidental prog! We can add it to the list of genres < maybe we can finally sneak Gary Numan in there, too > It would definitely be a mood lifter!

Yeah and the Tubes also while we're at it. Wink There is prog related though so I don't think "accidental prog" will go over too well.

Witch Hunt is awesome.  The most perfect evocative of mood as well as the best exposition of the confluence of fear and religion.  An amazing song in every way.  Vital Signs took a while to grown on me, but I now hold it in very high regard as well.

I love being fundamentally wrong. (I think it's my middle name.) Plus, I absolutely despise, hate, cannot tolerate, and feel nothing accessible in Larks Tongues in Aspic. I feel nothing, find nothing appreciable in the musicianship, collaboration, or composition. It's pure noise, fingers scratching across blackboards, metal tail pipes dragging down the road. Rubbish, trash, dissonant dissonance, white noise, black noise, noise. I prefer elevator music and Barry Manilow. And this is a band with my favorite drummer of all-time!

So I'm guessing you don't like it?

I'd say Thick as a Brick (though it might not quite make it), ITCOCK and Moonmadness
If they aren't top 20 they are close.  The rest, hmm, maybe 1 or 2 in my top 100 - possibly Close to the Edge and SEBTP, but possibly not

Weird because I could have sworn I read that either CTTE or Topographic was your favorite album of all time or even favorite Yes album. I'm pretty sure it was one of the two. I admit I would find it strange if you thought tales was your favorite yes record above fragile and CTTE although I have heard others say tales was their favorite as well.

1. Foxtrot
2. Fragile (preferably including America)
3. Relayer
4. Ctte
5. Selling England
6. Red
7. Lark's
..
8. Mirage
9. Per un Amico
...
10. Court
...
11. Wish you Were Here
12. Dark Side
13. Moonmadness
14. Moving Pictures
...
......
15. Thick as a Brick
...
......

.........

15. Animals

Can't comment on the rest because I disliked Pawn Hearts after 1-2 listens, and haven't heard Godbluff, plus I don't know anything about Wobbler.

Also, wanted to say I don't know how an album like Animals can be in the top 20 but no Lamb. I'd put it in the top 5 at least.

Good memory!!!

My favorite album of all time is indeed Tales but (for some reason) isn't even in the PA Top 100. I would rank Yes albums thusly: Tales, Fragile, CTTE, Relayer, TYA, GFTO...

Not that surprising, I'd have thought. It tends to polarise people. My late best friend was a big Yes fan, and he considered it their best work. I consider myself a Yes fan, too, and I've never quite got the hang of it.

The rest of your top 4 is the same as mine, though not in that order.

Let's give it a shot

1. Foxtrot
2. Moving Pictures
3. Close To The Edge
4. Hemispheres
5. Red
6. Animals
7. Dark Side Of The Moon
8. Per Un Amico
9. Thick As A Brick
10. Nursery Cryme
11. Selling England By The Pound
12. Larks' Tongues In Aspic
13. Fragile
14. Godbluff
15. In The Court Of The Crimson King
16. Wish You Were Here
17. Pawn Hearts
18. Relayer
19. Moonmadness

I haven't heard Mirage. Thick As A Brick and above are all perfect, yet somehow get progressively more and more perfect as you go up. Very tough decisions in there that mostly came down to memories attached to certain albums over others. Nursery Cryme is dangerously close to perfect as well, but the production is a bit hazy. After that we get less than perfect records. Selling England is flawed in some songwriting choices, though the performances and sequencing are brilliant, as is the production. Larks' Tongues is right on par with it, not quite matching SEBTP highs but having greater consistency (even if most live versions of its songs are superior, looking at you Easy Money). Fragile is the greatest EP ever made along with some nifty solo tracks that, while enjoyable, do make the album feel lightweight to me. Godbluff I only got recently and it's totally awesome, but I'm keeping it low until I'm better acquainted with it. ITCOTCK doesn't really go far enough for me, settling on atmosphere over ideas quite often, and of course there's the last 10 minutes of Moonchild that I don't love. Still, some absolute career highs happen to be on this LP. 21CSM and ITTTW being my two favorites. Wish You Were Here I view similarly to ITCOTCK, focusing more on atmosphere than musical content in many places. With an opener as epic and meticulously crafted as SOYCD, I just expect more from the three tracks in the middle. It's why I like Animals better. Pawn Hearts has stretches that are difficult to get through, but is frequently breathtaking and always exciting. I do think zaniness to that extent is more effective in juxtaposition with less outlandish sections, but then that's all relative. I vastly prefer VDGG to Magma! Relayer is great but feels light and airy to me in a way that an album with Chris Squire on it probably shouldn't feel. I prefer Chris' solo album from the same era, featuring Moraz on organ! And lastly Moonmadness... I would call it Moodmadness. Very much mood music for me. I do like it, and in fact I find less "wrong" with it than some albums I've placed higher... but I tend to zone out while it's on to such a degree I don't recall what song is on. Plus Aristillus doesn't make a good opener to my ears.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I never actually made such a list but I still know that the bottom four aren't anywhere near my top 1000... or 2000. I pretty much like-or love the rest of the albums (I've fallen a little out of love with Relayer in the last couple of years):

Mirage - Camel
Godbluff - Van Der Graaf Generator

5. Per Un Amico
6. Mirage
7. Selling England...
8. Wish You Were Here

11. Moving Pictures
12. Fragile
13. Godbluff
14. Thick as a Brick

If you could rearrange PAs top 20 albums of all time to your personal tastes, what would your list look like?
1) Moonmadness
2) Foxtrot
3) Selling England
4) Animals
5) Mirage
6) Relayer
7) Nursery Cryme
8) Moving Pictures
9) Dark Side of the Moon
10) Close to the Edge
11) Thick as a Brick
12) Per un Amico
13) From Silence to Somewhere
14) Fragile
15) Wish You Were Here
16) ITCOTCK
17) Red
18) Pawn Hearts
19) Godbluff
20 Larks Tongues in Aspic

But I don't like any of the bottom 5 at all.

It has dropped to 27th since 2019 anyway, so I didn't include it (but it's by Wobbler)

From Silence to Somewhere (by Wobbler) was not in the top 20 when you posted your list, but it was when the original thread was created in 2019.

With your list of 19, I think what you ended up leaving out was Hemispheres by Rush (currently in the PA #20 spot).  Shocked

SEBTP is possibly, no probably, the only album from this list which would be in my top 20.

1 SEBTP
2 Foxtrot
3 DSOTM
4 TAAB
5 WYWH

I really don't know after that.....

1: Dark Side of the Moon
2: Thick as a Brick
3: Close to the Edge
4: Per Un Amico
5: Pawn Hearts
6: Mirage
7: Animals
8: Larks Tongues in Aspic
9: Moonmadness
10: Foxtrot
11: Red
12: Godbluff
13: Relayer
14: Selling England
15: Moving Pictures
16: Nursery Cryme
17: Wish You Were Here
18: Fragile
19: Court of the Crimson King
20: From Silence to Somewhere

This was surprisingly easy. I've got some general thoughts on certain albums in the PA Top 20, though:

Broadly speaking, it's clearly biased toward the 1970s (17 of 20 albums) with no metal, krautrock, or zeuhl representation. I get that that's just the slant of this site's usrbase, but it's unrepresentative of the richness of the broader progosphere.

If I were making my own personal Top 20 with no limitations, no more than 5 of these would make that list. There are just a lot of albums here that I feel are pretty damn solid but are not masterpieces. That includes Moonmadness, Nursery Cryme (and honestly really most of Genesis's output), Godbluff, Wish You Were Here, and Relayer.

Fragile is a spotty as hell record that doesn't deserve the worshipful reception it gets. Yes, it has "Roundabout", "The Fish", "South Side of the Sky", and "Heart of the Sunrise". But those little interstitial cuts do nothing but suck the momentum out of the record.

In the Court of the Crimson King is a massively influential album, and I'd love to place it higher, but the last 9+ minutes of "Moonchild" are absolutely unlistenable. It's clear that Robert Fripp looooves jazzy improvisation. The issue is that he's simply not very good at doing it in an engaging manner. That extended instrumental spell is such a blight on the record that I have to put it this far down the list.

And finally, From Silence to Somewhere (and Wobbler more generally) are way overpraised. I enjoy them, but I do not get this rapturous love they seem to get. FStS is, again, a solid record. It made it into my personal Top 10 the year it was released. But there are so, so many better albums out there.

Not that it probably changes much for the people who haven't noticed this, but From Silence To Somewhere is no longer in the PA top 20. It's been replaced by Rush's Hemispheres.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

With that in mind, I'd put Hemispheres after Pawn Hearts on my list.
