The golden age of prog. One album per year, choose wisely..

1969 - In the court of the crimson king (King Crimson). Easy choise for me. First prog album of all time? A must listen for every proghead.

1970 - Trespass (Genesis). Maybe the best Genesis album. Stagnation and The Knife are top ten genesis songs of all time. Dusk is the weakest link but it's basically just a "filler". Honorable mentions - Lizard, H to he..., The least we can do...

1971 - Pawn Hearts (Vdgg). Magnum opus, no more words needed. Honorable mentions - Nursery cryme, In the land of grey and pink, Yes album, Fragile.

1972 - Close to the edge (Yes). Ahh, such a hard year for me to choose. Three 10/10 albums coming out in the same year, wow... Honorable mentions - Thick as a brick, Foxtrot.

1973 - Larks' tongues in aspic (King Crimson). Again, a really hard choise for me. I love "Selling" but still had to go with this one as it's so experimental and unique. Honorable mentions - Selling england by the pound, Dark side of the moon.

1974 - The lamb lies down on broadway (Genesis). No way, hardest year for me so far. Six incredible albums in the same year... Best double album of all time in my opinion. White album and The wall also are great but this is a step up from those. Honorable mentions - !!Red!!, Mirage, Relayer, Rock Bottom, Silent corner and...

1975 - Godbluff (Vdgg). Best comeback album, ever. A masterpiece, but still it was a hard choise. Honorable mentions - Wish you were here, Snow goose, Ommadawn, Scheherazade and other...

1976 - Still Life (Vdgg). The second best Still Life in the world :) Honorable mentions - A trick of the tail, Leftoverture.

1977 - Animals (Pink Floyd). Finally a Floyd album on this list. A special one for sure... Honorable mentions - Aja (not prog tho), Going for the one.

So here it is. 1973-1975 were the hardest ones for me. Too many good albums!

1969 - The Moody Blues - To Our Children's Children's Children
ITCOTCK is the obvious choice and the Moodies are only on the edge of prog, but I love TOCCC so much, it's gonna' be #1 for the year.

1970 - Emerson Lake and Palmer - Emerson Lake and Palmer
King Crimson again comes in a close second with Lizard

1971 - Aqualung, The Yes Album, or Tarkus? How does one decide?  Anybody got a 3-sided coin.
Alright, alright, I'm going with Aqualung today, but ask me again tomorrow (or ten minutes from now) and I might give a different answer.

1972 - Yes - Close to the Edge
with Tull's Thick as a Brick right on it's heels.

1973 - This is fusion year!  Since this site generally includes jazz fusion, I'm going with Billy Cobham - Spectrum, but with Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire right behind.
If I had to stay within the bounds of core prog, it'd be Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, with ELP - Brain Salad Surgery running a close second.

1974 - Another toss-up. I'll go with Camel - Mirage as 1a and Yes - Relayer as 1b. But that's just today.  Might change tomorrow.

1975 - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
But I can't not mention two of the Steve Hs -- Hackett with Voyage of the Acolyte and Hillage with Fish Rising

1976 - Kansas - Leftoverture.
No discussion.... unless of course you consider Rush - 2112 to be legit prog, in which case I've got another dilemma.

1977 - Rush - A Farewell to Kings.  Period.

I know it's outside the scope of this thread, but I have to continue and add:
1978 - U.K. - U.K.
because there's no way I'm ending this string without tacking that one on, even if 1978 is outside the golden age.

My apologies to artists who should have been included somewhere: Gentle Giant, PFM, Zappa, and Magma.

Good choises and thoughts, especially the three sided coin allegory :)

It could be others.

1969: Amon Düül II - Phallus Dei. Sorry to the Crimson King, but God's Phallus is bigger than yours.

1970: Magma - Kobaïa. I could never Sl*g this. I think that Magma erupted in a good way with this double-album debut, and for me they never beat it.

1971: Comus - First Utterance or Igor Wakhevitch's Docteur Faust (can't decide between these creepy classics). Okay, I'll go with Comus. Comus wants to play, play, play, and I'm willing to play, play, play this album again and again. I might be disturbed.

1972: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches. This fly killer slays.

1973: Can - Future Days. When I first heard this many years ago I didn't like it much, but in future days I became rather incontinent and so appreciated the Can much more.

1974: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom. No this is not an exercise guide for firmer buttocks. Who knew that a rocky bottom could feel like this?

1975: Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning.   The moosic of the revolution. Having been a teacher, I value learning.

1976: Zanov - Green Ray. This ray hit me square between the eyes with its greeny goodness.

1977: Franco Leprino - Integrati... Disintegrati. You may integrate me and you may disintegrate me, but you'll never break me, umm....

1972 - Jane - Together (tough year)
1973 - Camel - s/t

1975 - Ange -  Emile Jacotey
1976 - Camel - Moonmadness

that's what I thought of today, if i made another one, it could be different. Tough choice list to do anyway...

1976 - Genesis - A Trick of The Tail
1977 - Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness and Charm

1977 was the toughest to choose and normally I would go for Animals but that Hawkwind album is pretty special given that I really hate pretty much everything else I've heard by them! Also honourable mention for Colosseum II who released 2 great albums in that year. Criminally ignored band that really took the fusion thing by storm imo. Moore + Airey + Hiseman ( and the other guy). Just ave it!!

edit - whoops messed up on my years!

I spot a lot of prog-favorites here. But these things are difficult for me. If I get to pick only one album I need at least three, if I get three I suddenly want five and now that i gotten to choose five I'd feel like adding an additional five etc... but I'm quite certain I would have gone for Postaolean Train Robbery (over Godbluff) for 1975 and perhaps Volume Two (or some Miles... although KC is essential) for 1969 + maybe Ege Bamyasi or Crossings for 1972. The rest of your picks I could have landed on myself - although UZ and Klaus Schulze got some mighty strong contenders for 1977. And if I went for Can in '72 I wouldn't allow myself another Can for '73 (btw: Monster Movie would also had been relevant for '69). So that could actually have paved way for Dedalus. Yes, I love their debut that much.

All of those for me too, and in fact I had planned to have Cos on the list. Had I not had Postaolean Train Robbery listed as 1974, it would have taken Henry Cow's place. Crossings I also wanted, and Miles, and considered Monster Movie. And I planned to have Soft Machine's Third mentioned. And it is sad not to have a VdGG there. Originally I started doing three choices per year, but then I wanted to do the silly descriptions thing. Suffice to say, there's lot of great music, although my choices wouldn't align with most peoples.

Hi,

No favorites  ... I would end up feeling guilty that I did not mention one or another!

There is, and was, a lot of great music, and it is impossible for me to select one over the other!

hmm..

69 woo hoo.. and why not go with the greatest of the great.  Stones - Let It Bleed
70 - See it was mentioned so kudos..   George - All Things Must Pass (even if Apple Jams complete sucks.. the first 3 sides are 10 star stuff.. so that averages 7.5.. which smokes pretty much anything else from the year)

71- pfff..  The Allmans - At Fillmore East.. rock's single greatest live recording.. and only topped by J.B's Apollo for greatest live recording period.

72 - Manassas - S/T   a sprawling masterpiece of Americana

73 - Yes - TFTO  - the pinnacle of prog rock.. a short climb up from its beginning.. and god DAMN what a long roll downhill  afterwards into self parody for the genre  .. in fact.. heard there was a new Wobbler album coming. so I guess that bitch is still rolling haha

74 - Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel. The masterpiece of a true musical legend and one of the most influential musicians of the last half century.

75 - Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger..   the album that launched a legend.. and forever changed a genre. The first progressive country album and what a masterpiece it is

76 - David Bowie - Station to Station..  where a legend.. become even more and becomes an icon.

77 - Steely Dan - Aja    easy..  musical lyrical and studio perfection all wrapped into one...

well that's a loaded question.. depends of course on what you mean by 'symphonic'. Quite a few of the groups we have here listed as symphonic simply.. umm.. weren't LOL Or were highly debateable at the very least. Two best and classic examples were Yes which did.. one.. count 'em.. one symphonic album their entire lifespan..  and ELP who were heavily influenced by classical music (not the same by half as being 'symphonic') but sounded more like a heavy metal band (complete with sappy power ballads and probably got more sex than even the Crue got hahah) just with a shredding keyboardist rather than a guitarist.

the best symphonic band IMO.. Renaissance.. hands down...

Like Jean I will extend the list to 1979 because I think the golden age of prog ended with the 70s.

1970 Magma - Magma
1971 Ash Ra Tempel - Ash Ra Tempel
1972 Khan - Space Shanty
1973 Gryphon - Gryphon
1974 Henry Cow - Unrest
1975 Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
1976 Van der Graaf Generator - Still Life
1977 John Greaves & Peter Blegvad - Kew Rhone
1978 Steve Hillage - Green
1979 The Residents - Eskimo

1975 was such a great year. "Clearlight Symphony", "Warrior on the Edge of Time", "Rubycon", "Ricochet", "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale", "Shamal", "Wish You Were Here", "Free Hand", "The Snow Goose", "One Size Fits All", "Sheherazade and other Stories", "Nightingales and Bombers", "Inventions for Electric Guitar", "Recycled", "The Rotter's Club", "Voyage of the Acolyte", "Fish Rising", "Another Green World", "Fish Out of Water", "Godbluff"... The list just goes on and on.

Indeed. Most difficult job chosing one from this year, followed by 1972, 1971, 1974.

just a few more great albums from 1975, all in our collection, but by no means all prog: "Physical Graffiti", "A Night at the Opera", "Zuma", "Blues for Allah", "Siren", "Hair of the Dog", "Nuthin' Fancy", "Stampede", "Red Octopus", "Blow by Blow", "Landed" (an underrated album)... and more and more and more

The years 1973 to 1975 have such a plethora of excellent music, as you already have mentioned so many, that I only like to add the fabulous Quadrophenia (The Who, 1973) which had a great impact on me at the time (and I continue to fully enjoy up to this day)

This will be fun

1969: Court of The Crimson King - My second favorite album ever, easy

1970: Trespass - I listened to H to the He for the first time so maybe it could change but I personally love this album start to finish.

1971: Nursery Cryme - this ones tough, fragile, meddle and pawn hearts are all quite close but this is my favorite. again like trespass, great from start to finish, just a little better ;)

1972: Foxtrot: No questions asked, my favorite album of all time. Sorry close to the edge.

1973: Camel: Ok so I can admit, Dark side of the moon and selling england are better albums, but right now I would def reach for this album first, there's quite a charm and its very solid throughout, if it was "best" album for each year, Dark Side Wins.

1974: Relayer: Shoutout to of course Red and Mirage (and mini shoutout to Kansas's debut) another close one but Relayer is the one for me right now. If it was "best" it would be red.

1975: Wish You Were Here: Godbluff close second, but this album is just transcending. Incredible.

1976: Moonmadness: again this was an easy choice for me, my 3rd favorite album. Trick of the Tail second. Leftoverture 3rd

1977: Animals: ye this one was easy, another floyd masterpiece and my favorite by them.
