I find it intriguing that in some comparisons Steely Dan have become a benchmark. It depends on which band you put agianst them. Except any of the main 7 of prog + 8 more, Steely Dan will contend strongly. Of the big 6 i think Steely Dan in a poll could hold strongly against ELP. Against the others they will be stomped.

Classic benchmarks in PA are the troika of Yes/Genesis/King Crimson vs x band
Pink Floyd vs x band
Suppers Ready vs x song
Starless vs x song
Beatles vs x band

Now it also is Steely Dan vs x crossover prog / prog related band

This one was tough. I consider MDK a dominating album and better than anything The Dan ever did(which is saying A LOT). And there are other Magma albums that I really like.. the debut, Felicite Thosz, Attahk, Udu Wudu.

But those first 7 albums from The Dan, especially when you factor in the solo Fagen stuff.. just too much. Good poll though, I had to think about this one.

Does this mean I don't have to start a ELP VS Steely Dan poll like I was going to? Smile

Literally.

Won't vote, about as far from comparable as two bands can be.   Plus I don't feel confident in my Magma listening experience (translation: Steely Dan ...)

Both. They should have done a collaboration album.

Another good collaboration would be Magma and Minnie Ripperton. Her album 'Come to my garden' weirdly reminds me of Magma, like a software, feminine version.

I hear what you mean about Minnie Ripperton and Magma. A collaboration between her and the Magma-related Offering would have worked really well. They both have those soulful and jazzy qualities.

Ha! broke the 19-19 tie!

Granted, I've not see Steely Dan in concert, but the band doesn't stand out in any way for me.

I don't listen to studio Magma much, but love watching them perform, both online and live. Their concert at the Psycho Las Vegas (2017) was one of the most AMAZING performance I've ever seen!

Steely Dan for me. I don't listen to either band that much but the general feeling of Dan's music is just lovely and warm. I can never tire of the lyrics either.

Most definitely Magma. I never liked Steely Dan much and am really surprised that a drummer like Steve Gadd ever teamed up with them. His talents are in my opinion wasted in the band.

Some Steely Dan songs are ok, a few Magma songs not so.
