Yes, I know this is arbitrary so if you want to vote for a band but think the run should start with a later or earlier album you can still vote for it but please specify in comments where it would start and end. Also, I didn't include live albums. I think all these bands are among the most important in prog which is why I chose them. I'm sorry if I left out your favorite(favorites).

I went with Yes but Genesis, Rush & Floyd all had great runs as well.

On the list, I suppose Van der Graaf Generator and Pink Floyd, or edit (since I missed it, Gentle Giant).
Not on the list:
- Art Zoyd (really the first eight). Going with Musique Pour L'Odyssée through Berlin (love the debut, but since we have a reworked version I started with the second album) .
- Tangerine Dream: Electronic Meditation to Stratosfear
- Magma: Kobaia to Attahk
- Heldon: Électronique Guérilla to Stand By
- Robert Wyatt (really the first eight), but I'll go with The End Of An Ear to Cuckooland, though I could go with Rock Bottom to Comicopera.
- Miles Davis: Filles De Kilimanjaro to Get Up With It
- Popol Vuh: (first eight really), but I'll go with Affenstunde to Aguirre rather than the better rated In Den Gärten Pharaos to Letzte Tage - Letzte Nächte (either works).
- Univers Zero: 1313 to Rhythmix (Rythmix not as strong imo) and really it's more of a ten album run.
- Present: Triskaïdékaphobie to Barbaro (Ma Non Troppo)
I am tempted to vote other, but I might give a vote to the VdGG run.
With Pink Floyd it's more of an eleven album run for me (I even like More a lot), but I think I would go with The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn to Obscured by Clouds rather than from Atom Heart Mother (I'd have to have Ummagumma and I like earlier Floyd a lot). I do love The Wall, though, so....
EDIT: I will go other for my Art Zoyd choices.

Picked out most of the ones I'd have mentioned, Univers Zero, Art Zoyd & Magma are really no brainers.
Especially for Hercules. No mention of King Crimson? ITCOTCK, ITWOP, Lizard, Islands, LTIA, S&BB, Red
Black Sabbath? s/t, Paranoid, MOR, Vol4, SBS, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy.

this is a really tough one. I'm not sure I am totally happy with any 7 album run, but Eloy, Moodys and Camel all did a great job. Going with Camel because none of the albums in their run is what I would call weak. I wasn't big on Eloy's Floating and Power and the Passion or Moodys On the Threshold of a Dream. If Eloy's sequence started with Power and Passion and ended with Time to Turn, it might have gotten my vote, but maybe not

^ Well it often was a judgement call on where to start a "run" for these albums. With Camel I thought about starting with the first(same with Yes and VDGG) and also with "inside" for Eloy. I didn't add Caravan because some of the later albums aren't regarded as highly. Same thing with Renaissance, Focus, PFM and Nektar.

You know, I deliberately left off ELP but I admit King Crimson is a definite oversight. I could have done ITCOTCK to Red. Shame on me. Wow. Oh well. Maybe I'll do a part two and add them on that poll. As for Sabbath I don't really consider them full on prog but I could put them on the next one(if I do another)anyway. They certainly have some proggy material and imo are very under rated as an influence of prog metal(something they don't seem to get much credit for).

Sorry just stole those from your post that are the essentials for me + the later discussed KC of course. Also Klaus Schulze - Cyborg to Mirage (skipped Irrlicht only so that I could include the latter album) and very few have discovered just how excellent each Rabih Abou-Khalil-album from Between Dusk and Dawn to Tarab really is.
Then there's the progrelated Electric Light Orchestra On the Third Day to Time & Steely Dan Can't Buy a Thrill to Gaucho
+ I would have started with Camel's debut and stopped with I Can See Your House from Here
I love all ten first albums by The Residents and don't know where I would start or end:

I voted for Yes on this poll, but there are many here that I also considered. At first I thought that King Crimson could have been on this list and considered voting for other because of this, but we are talking about a 7 album consecutive run, and when I think of it in that light, Yes still wins for consecutive awesomeness. KC comes close, and still remains my overall favorite band, but couldn't really hold out when comparing it over 7 consecutive albums. KC's best albums are more interspersed among their entire discography.

This poll really shows how amazing the late 60's -> 70's era was for prog and how spoiled we were with great album after great album streaks from multiple bands. Of the bands on the list, and really evaluating how much I like each of the 7 albums in the range, I'd go with Genesis. My 1st inclination was VDGG, but while the last 4 string of Godbluff/StillLife/WorldRecord/PleasureDome are great, I like the 1st era much better before they reformed and those feel like a step down for me. Also, I'd count Aerosol Gray as the 1st VDGG album and drop off PleasureDome. Anyway, the Genesis 7 dipped a bit at the end for me, but was more consistently excellent throughout. That said, I really have no choice but to vote other because...
King Crimson - ITCOTCK -> Red
Other favorite 7 streak prog for me would be:
Procol: Procol Harum -> Exotic Birds & Fruit Ange: Caricatures -> Vu D'un Chien (technically a streak of 6 as the 7th was a bit of a lemon) Beatles: Rubber Soul -> Abbey Road (not a big fan of Let it Be so started at Rubber Soul which I like much more) PFM: Storia Di Un Minuto -> Jet Lag (#7 is a minor step down but the 1st 6 are all amazing) Roxy Music: Roxy Music -> Flesh and Blood
Outside of prog:
Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath -> Technical Ecstasy (though I don't like #7) Rolling Stones: Aftermath -> Exile on Main Street

Genesis......Yes........Tull.........Rush etc. It's very hard to have a truly great run of 7 albums, given bands change line-ups and that they are rightly experimenting and trying out new things. Marillion were not too far short, and so were Spock's Beard, I suppose, but it's all very subjective. If you're a fan, all releases from your bands have their highlights. ELP and King Crimson's runs were as good as many etc.

[Also, I'd count Aerosol Gray as the 1st VDGG album and drop off PleasureDome.]
Not being familiar with those albums I consulted the discography on here and saw that QZ/PD had a higher rating which is why I chose to include that album and not the first one. Otherwise it would be eight albums if I had both.

1) I could actually pick any sequence of seven albums out of Art Zoyd's catalogue and find it competitive. 2) Can's first six albums are awesome but the seventh one, Landed, lets them down a bit. Inserting Unlimited Edition instead they'd have a winning sequence day and night. 3) I love Quiet Zone/Pleasure Dome and its inclusion will actually make me vote VDGG, otherwise Pink Floyd would've grabbed it.

I don't know all of these, but of the ones I know, it would have to be Pink Floyd, closely followed by Yes. For me Rick Wakeman has his own run of wonderful albums from 6 Wives to Criminal Record (considering Journey as part of the run).

I think in terms of amazing progression---(it is called progressive rock) moving their sound forward in huge steps---bringing amazing musicians on board to advance the sound----YES did it 100%--up until GFTO.
some of the other bands did ok but overall sound stayed the same.
but Genesis was pretty great too...

Really want to vote for Yes, and while I love Time and a Word, it's not as good as the other 6 albums in the run.
Pink Floyd's is also great, though Obscured by Clouds kills that one for me.
It's between Porcupine Tree and Genesis, and I'm going to go with Genesis, because while Signify and Stupid Dream were good, Genesis's 7 were all just totally incredible. Each one was marvelous in its own way. I will also add that Genesis's 7 is the only streak on this list where all 7 albums have 4+ stars on the site (Gentle Giant comes very close, but the debut falls just short).
Also, I would have dropped Nude and included Camel's debut; I get that would kill the streak based on the site scores because I Can See Your House From Here has, if I remember correctly, a 2.97, but I've always thought that album was brutally underrated.

1 Camel (Breathless and ICSYHFH are not as good as the rest, but still very good) 2 IQ (Ever to Road of Bones) 3 Genesis 4 Strawbs (Dragonfly to Ghosts) 5 Gentle Giant 6 Marillion 7 Rush (the early ones are just OK)
All the other bands listed did at least one real stinker somewhere in the list (eg A Passion Play, TFTO, The Wall). See a common link?

Just curious -- Adding the rating scores for each of the seven albums noted gives this:
Genesis - 30.48 Gentle Giant - 29.52 Pink Floyd - 29.37 VDGG - 29.05 Yes - 28.98 Porcupine Tree - 28.50 Rush - 28.36 Jethro Tull - 28.30 Marillion - 27.41 Eloy - 27.38 Flower Kings - 26.88 Moody Blues - 26.62 Camel - 26.31 Spock's Beard - 25.75
If you change Rush to 2112 to Grace Under Pressure, their score goes up to 29.12.
King Crimson is missing and would be 29.27 for In the Court to Red.

Gentle Giant. The quality through those albums was superb and consistently good throughout I like Trespass, but don't rate it as highly as Selling England or Foxtrot and the quality was more variable through those Genesis albums IMO.

If one cheats a little, Renaissance had 7. From Prologue to A Song for all Seasons, including Live at Carnegie Hall. Since that live album was the introduction to the band for many, and sometimes their only possession by the band, it might make sense to include it

Everyone is going on about how King Crimson were not on the list(something I didn't do on purpose)but not one person mentioned the fact that I also forgot Kansas. Kansas to Audio Visions should be on there as well(although admittedly mainly for their first five).

I said early on no live albums. If I made an exception for one band I'd have to make an exception for others. I'm sure Yes would have more votes if I made it TYA to GFTO with Yessongs in there but it doesn't seem right to include live albums since it's mostly material from the previous albums.

hmm, well we could include Renaissance Mach 1 albums which would really please at least one person who has been trolling these posts and conveying his love for that aggregation and his meh-ness for Mach 2. If we did it would be an 8 album run from renaissance thru a song for all seasons. Many people really love the s/t but I think the followup "Illusion" is slightly better.

Not sure who has been trolling the posts, but I like pre-Haslam Renaissance (bit surprised it often seems to get neglected). The debut album to Novella is pretty strong methinks. Instead of Mach One, or Mark One as I would sooner call it, it might be called Relfaissance.

hmm, well we could include Renaissance Mach 1 albums which would really please at least one person who has been trolling these posts and conveying his love for that aggregation and his meh-ness for Mach 2. In my opinion a "run" should also offer some consistency in terms of band members, band phase etc. I don't think it'd make a proper "run" integrating two largely different bands under the same name with a minimum element of continuity. Neither do I think that King Crimson had a "run" including the early 80s trilogy together with Red and the albums before, as much as this would in my view shatter any competition in terms of the sum of the individual qualities of these albums. This would lack continuity, so it shouldn't count.

I could easily do ^ that one (great run, Crim), or Yes, or Renaissance, or, with some adjustment, Eloy and Tangerine Dream.
But how about this run? I mean, BÖC did do *some* proggy stuff!
I. Tyranny and Mutation II. Secret Treaties III. Agents of Fortune IV. Spectres V. Mirrors VI. Cultosaurus Erectus VII. Fire of Unknown Origin
And for Hawkwind (this is just my take, as I cheated and omitted P.X.R.5, which is an album recorded earlier than its release date suggests, and has some live performances):
I. Warrior on the Edge of Time II. Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music III. Quark, Strangeness and Charm IV. Sonic Attack V. Choose Your Masques VI. Church of Hawkwind VII. The Chronicle of the Black Sword

Just wondering if anyone thinks "Feel Euphoria" is the reason Spock's Beard didn't get any votes(so far anyway). I always hear people say it's a weak one. However, I have Octane(which is rated lower)and don't think that's a bad album.

Good call. Great run there by Caravan. From the list it's gotta be Gentle Giant, no album in their run that's even close to being weak.
Although not a prog act, Steely Dan should at least get a mention somewhere in this thread. Can't Buy a Thrill - Gaucho.. talk about a run.

So Rush is my favorite group and just about any seven album run in their 19 studio album catalog is gonna get high marks from me.
But when you hit the number 7, really, the only choice is The Moody Blues.

From the list, I'd have to go with Yes.
But I would also respectfully submit for consideration Fates Warning: Perfect Symmetry to Theories Of Flight. And also Queen: Queen II to Innuendo.
Yes, it's more than seven albums each, but I think it falls within the arc and curve, scope and sphere of the topic before us.
Any thoughts?

Obviously the best 7 studio album run is:
King Crimson from ITCOTKC to Red
Following:
Pink Floyd VDGG Genesis Gentle Giant Yes Jethro Tull Renaissance from Renaissance to Novella
Caravan from Caravan to Blind Dog... Camel from Camel to I Can See... Porcupine Tree

Don't worry folks. At some point I'm going to do a "do over" and include King Crimson. I'll include a few other bands who you want to see added and omit some of the bands on here with the least number of votes(sorry SB). You can mention on here which bands you want to see but please keep them as close to prog as possible. Also, I hate to disappoint you but I don't plan on including Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Black Sabbath or the Beatles.

DEERHOOF Apple O Milk Man The Runners Four Friend Opportunity Offend Maggie Deerhoof Vs. Evil Breakup Song La Isla Bomita The Magic Mountain Moves

Great call! Picking a run of 7 though is very difficult for me, as they have some slightly weaker albums in the middle, and I don't care much for the first two. Here's my top 7:

As a big fan of the Menel-era, I would have to say that any run of seven albums by IQ would be top of my list, and I literally wouldn't be able to choose one set over any other.....
But from this list, I chose Marillion; it's probably their best overall era, and none of their first seven are poor albums.

Pictures at an Exhibition could be considered legitimately as it was completely fresh material. I would then go to Works Vol One and Two. Both are underrated in my opinion.
Tangerine Dream - I absolutely love their music in the period 1979 to 1986 so I would pick

From the list I would choose Rush, but shift the streak to _2112_ through _Signals_.
I would very much wish to choose Pink Floyd but I can't think of any streak that long that doesn't have dramatic swings of low to high. I very much like everything from _Pipers..._ to _Animals_ and feel Floyd's high points eclipse anything done by Rush, but Rush is much more consistent.
All time, any artist, it has to be Autechre. I can think of no other artist who has so consistently made great music throughout their entire career and would put their streak as _Amber_ to _NTS Sessions_. That's twelve albums and only leaves out their first, _Incunabula_, which suffers slightly for sounding a teeny bit amateurish and dated by comparison. Autechre's streak is all the more impressive because they still continue to innovate and still continue to set new highs. How many artists who have recorded for 30 years are making their best music in their mature years, all the while their early efforts still hold strong?
Another good contender would be Nurse With Wound, though culling out seven proper, chronologically current studio albums from in between all the many collections of curiosities would be difficult.
Coil is a good contender as well, with a very strong streak of nine from _Horse Rotorvator_ through _Music To Play In the Dark2_, though one has to disregard a couple anomalies in the time line.

That would make it only 6 albums though and not seven. You would have to include GUP and I wanted focus more on their proggy material since this is after all a prog site. ;) CoS to Signals would make more sense, however, most seem to think their prog era ended with MP.

Oops! You are very correct, so I'll append that to include _Grace Under Pressure_. Heck, _Fly By Night_ to _Grace Under Pressure_ is a pretty good streak in its own right. I do think _Grace_ is an overall better and more consistent album than either _Fly_ or _Caress_.

Well, I didn't include any post MP Rush albums(and I mentioned this on here before)because I don't consider anything after MP or at the very least signals to be prog(or at least prog in the strictest sense). They are good albums but they are more like synth rock and not really prog imo. I could have maybe done COS to Signals but that's about as far as I would go.

I agree, Power Windows is woefully underrated.
But I'm not gonna change a seven album run to one that excludes 2112?
Also to get to Power Windows, you've gotta' go through Grace Under Pressure, one of my least favorite Rush albums.
Come to think of it, even though Rush is my favorite band, I can't think of a seven album string without a significant dip somewhere.
Which is why I went with the Moodies. DOFP through Seventh Sojourn is flawless. Nobody can touch it for consistent excellence without anything falling below a top shelf level.
