10cc are big fun. I don't care much about the others.

I'd have to give it to ELO, they actually wrote songs .

To sum up my views on all four bands:

I love all four bands. I probably appreciate ELO's early, more proggy work (e.g. El Dorado) less than I do APP's. ELO's latter-day proggy album "Time" is probably better overall than any individual album the four bands here put out. For their pop albums I'm probably fan #1 of their poorly received "Balance of Power." APP's albums are all consistently very good or great, but I tend to often go for individual tracks. Asia has two album's I value, the debut and Astra. I think Astra is underrated. 2008's Phoenix is very good and their most proggy album.  I like an album by Payne era Asia called "Aria." 10cc has a lot of great to phenomenal individual tracks, but I don't really like any of their albums all that much. Sometimes they sound a bit contrived and repetitive, and trying too hard to be funny or clever. Nonetheless they probably have the biggest high points of any of these bands. There is a truly amazing Eric Stewart solo album from 2009 called "Viva La Difference" that I wish all 10cc albums were like.

No vote as I've heard bugger all of Asia. The other three I'd list among my favourite bands so it'd be near-impossible to decide anyway.

I like all of them to some extent, but 10cc are my favourites. Sheet Music is one of the all-time classics.

I'd have to go with ELO mostly for their first three albums, with APP a close second. It's nice to see that both Alan Parsons and Jeff Lynne are still performing live and still playing some of their early stuff (like The Raven and 10538 Overture).

I guess the poll means the Asia of the 80's, wich I don't like very much.

I do like the 90's Asia with John Payne. Not as a progband, but as a melodic rockband. One of the best melodic rockbands of the 90's, when melodic rock was almost non-existent.
But I chose Alan Parsons Project, because in the periode they peaked, they peaked more than the others (in my opinion).

If the poll would've included Barclay James Harvest, they would've gotten my vote. The most symphonic band of the softer bands, in my opinion.

Same for me, they really rulled in that particular niche.

Although I'm not familiar with all albums by all bands(just the "hits" for ELO and 10cc)I voted anyway and for APP at that.

^^ Exactly that.

Almost unrivalled. Only Mandalaband, Alan Parsons, Keats, Al Stewart and Moody Blues are in the same league.

On the other hand: hardcore proglovers hate Barclay James Harvest (according to the posts I read on this forum), but if you like slow, melodic, spiritual, dreamy prog, Barclay James Harvest is really a treat.

One of my all-time favorite soft-rock bands.

Okay, I will try them out. I know them only by name, never gave them a spin.

I must say, because I'm a dutchman, I sometimes don't like the dutch accent in the english language.

You're safe here, curiously, the singer has excellent pronunciation (as much as I can be a judge on this matter, mind you, myself being portuguese)
If you can, try to listen to the tracks in their original sequence (the 2005 compilation even went to the extreme of splitting a single track on separate discs ????) and choose studio not live versions.

I always (ALWAYS!) listen to studio-albums in the original order/sequence. :D
I never listen to seperate tracks. Even when I have music on my headphones, and I arrived at my destination, and the song is not finished, I have to listen to the song finish, even if I have to wait outside somewhere. So I can start with the next song when I leave.

I only listen to compilations when they feature rare songs. So I will follow your suggestion ;)

So did 10cc.

And APP. And I'm sure Asia did too.

ELO....the first 4 are all good....later pop stuff didn't really interest me.  Alan Parsons was always hit or miss for me....10CC was a clever arty pop-rock band at times and to this day I still don't own any Asia.

ELO was a tad too precious at times. APP was generously spotty along the way. I love 10cc for its musicianship and reassuring humor.

I have a strong and profound respect and awe of the song writing legacy of Graham Gouldman, the 10cc docu when it talked about hes achievments and natural ability of song writing in the 60s makes me emotional. How natural hes ability of writing songs   is a very rare thing.

Note how this is close except for Asia, with only 3 votes out of 41 votes total. Downes and the late John Wetton tried so hard to revive the band's rep in recent years. Should've done a poll, light prog, which band had the best musicians ;p?

ELO is the only one of those bands I like at all. APP bores me to death, and the others just aren’t my bag.

Hi,

And more ... their history in music ... starting with Neil Sedaka ... I don't think that folks that look at 10CC as just a song band, really give a cahoot for the rest of their work ... they were not just a song band making hits! And one member wrote and directed a lot of music videos. AND they also worked tight with HIPGNOSIS in developing a lot of ideas, many of which became album covers for 10CC. "Po" speaks about it, in the Hipgnosis special ... but by that time 10CC was much more than just a bunch of street musicians ... way more ... more like special members of art school making fun of the music scene for their cheap art.

ELO is nice, but after Eldorado, I think it was over ... and sadly, when Roy Wood left, so did a lot of its personality and fun. It was a riot to see them do Roll Over Beethoven, but very boring in their later years just playing the hits and putting many of us to sleep!

APP was not interesting after the 2nd or 3rd album ... rehash!

Asia ... never had it in my collection ... at that time, the European scene was way more important for me than a band I did not think was that great and that was put together to simply carry the names and egos of the "stars" ... and take away some fine stuff, the rest was filler.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
