Which of these US psych/proto bands is your favorite?
I left out Janis Joplin/Big Brother & holding company, Jimi Hendrix(and Experience), Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller Band and the Grateful Dead because I wanted to focus on ones that aren't as obvious.

QMS for Cipollina alone, followed closely by Touch. Cream, High Tide, Band of Gypsys, the Dead .

Out of these, I like Mothers the best, even if they are far different from the other offerings. From outside the poll, I absolutely love C.A. Quintet's lone release Trip Thru Hell.

Mothers of Invention takes my vote. Quite excellent list though.

I know very little of this bands, but it was obvious Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa) would win. Actually, it would have been a closer vote if he had been put next to the more "obvious" choices, and still in this particular forum I believe he would have wond against Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and The Doors (I don't really know the other obvious ones you mentioned, but I understand they were very notable too).

Spirit is one of the most underrated bands in ProgArchives. I did a poll on them and like 5 people voted. For this poll I would like to see Zappa replaced by Capt. Beyond.

The thing is though that Captain Beyond's first album is from 72 and this is a poll for sixties bands. They would be better off in another poll.

I guess maybe you were thinking of Captain Beefheart?

no Jefferson Airplane?? From this lest, Spirit, QMS and Vanilla Fudge in that order.... HP Lovecraft might also have been a valid choice for this poll

The singing though Like dialing The Moodies' more romantic gestures up to 11...and then in full blown harmony uuhhh Funny how something one used to love now makes you cringe. The music though still is as powerful as the first time I heard it. Those drums man!

It's A Beautiful Day. Progressive mixed with flower power. Excellent. And I love that fiddle.

I'm not really sure what flower power is but yes that one song "white bird" is at least proto prog in my mind.
Anyway, the Mothers of Invention is the winner by a wide margin with Vanilla Fudge coming in at second with Spirit and Iron Butterfly tied for third. I'm actually a bit surprised their weren't more votes for Love and Spirit.

Spirit for me.....love what they did on the first 4 albums.....but QMS, Love, Mothers...and even Butterfly were great bands. Sadly Touch only did the one LP....would have been interesting to see where they would have gone next on a second LP.

Yep, or even the Pop Art Experimental band, the thirteenth floor elevators, Fifty Foot Hose, The United States of America, the Ultimate Spinach and several others. However, you can't remember everyone but I think I did ok considering the results. I didn't include J.A. for the same reason I didn't include the Doors, Janis, Jimi, GD, etc. I wanted bands who were a little bitter lesser known(just like many of the prog polls on here).

Yeah I haven't heard all these bands but I'm a big enough Zappa fan that I went ahead and voted for The Mothers. Hard for me to imagine that any of the other bands are even close to that kind of genius.

QMS for me, natch, JC being a life-long idol. 2nd would be Spirit. The original lineups are 2 of the most electrifying bands that I've ever seen live. Moby Grape were great, and terrific live, but probably the least prog of any of the bands in the poll. Jefferson Airplane is often thought of as being more mainstream because of their 2 hit singles, but After Bathing at Baxters and, to a slightly lesser degree, Crown of Creation are very progressive. I agree with Sean that H.P. Lovecraft would have been a valid choice for the poll, but they wouldn't have changed my vote.
