I understand that this website accepts the later beatles as pre-prog, opening the door for bands like King crimson and Yes, but I believe that Magical MYstery tour is a true prog album. Each song is filled with multiple ideas, flowing fomr one to the other, and back to the original.A lot of complex structures and time changes. What do you say? ------------- I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t. -Stone Beard |

I guess that would make Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club a pure prog album, since they are linked aren't they? I always thought of the White Album as somewhat progressive. Beatles don't fit under true prog, but there should be a category for them, as they did help pioneer prog rock, but that's my humble opinion. ------------- "It's amazing that we've been able to put up with each other for 35 years. It wasn't a proper lp as such, the orginal was a double EP/two 7 inch
singles which played at 33rpm, the US released the Magical Mystery
songs with the additon of Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane etc as
an album later on. But the original release was a double EP. |

does that make it not prog? as for Sgt.Pepper and The Beatles(the white album) they have they're prog moments, some time shifts, and different idaes like that, but not nearly as much as on magical mystery, where every song is like this. But the song "Happiness is a warm gun" is undoubtably a true prog song. its just that I think it should deserve the title of true prog, because it really is... but hey, what do I know. | The trouble is how to include a band that only has some prog albums, (Beatles, Deep Purple, or even The Rolling Stones have one or two albums more "prog" than many albums of, for instance, Genesis). I think that the administrators consider "the whole" or "the majority" of the artist's career. |

mailto:M@X - M@X could add a genre called "Pre Progressive/Pioneers" meaning band that helped to start Prog and include Beatles latter stuff, I too like the Magical Mystery Tour.

Except in the case of Roxy Music and Queen where the bulk of their output is NOT prog OR Art Rock as claimed in the archives.. IMO.. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

Yes, this category has been considered by many members (myself included) as 'proto prog'. I heartily agree that such a category should be here, as there were many bands, like The Beatles, Spirit and Spooky Tooth, that laid the foundations for the genre. I've always considered The Beatles as the first prog band. Sure, it doesn't sound like King Crimson, Genesis, Yes or whoever did later, but they were probably the earliest band to use the album format as something other than a ragbag of singles and covers, and 'Rubber Soul' was a sublime collection of various genres rarely heard on a mainstream pop/rock album. Future albums went even further, culminating in 'Sgt Pepper' and 'Magical Mystery Tour', which saw their musical ambition at its highest, with lots of musical experimentation. The production by George Martin also upped the ante a great deal as well, and moved away from the live sound of earlier 60s albums from utilising the studio as an instrument. Though the next few albums were really more back to basics type albums, 'Abbey Road' was a return to the more ornate sound of albums like 'Sgt Pepper', and harmonies never get any better than on 'Because', my favourite Beatles song of all time (Greenslade certainly heard this song- just check out 'Bedside Manners Are Extra' and see the similarity...).

Ah, I was only pointing out that it isn't an album as such, as for
the prog aspect, I agree with the 'proto prog' tag for the music of The
Beatles.

All: For those who saw the infamous "letter," you might note that the creation of a "proto-prog" or "roots of prog" subgenre was among the five "demands" therein. I know that M&R have been planning to do this, but it has languished for some time. I think we will probably see this within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned. Peace. |
