The ultimate poll of genesis, the popular genesis of birth, birth of beginnings of genres. Birth of space rock, birth of prog rock and birth of heavy metal/rock. This is not the poll for historical nittpicking but poll of historical benchmarks.
So whom is the supreme pioneer.

Since this is a poll of historical benchmarks, I think King Crimson should win this one.

Very tough choice strictly on the basis of "historical benchmarks".  It could be argued that Syd & the Floyd invented psychedelic rock...Sabbath invented heavy metal...and Crimso invented prog.

No vote for Floyd because there were other psychedelic bands blooming independently at the same time.  Same for Crimso (though none with such a dominant mellotron presence).  Sabbath though was something completely new...they created heavy metal with a mix of dark lyrical subject matter, very heavy guitar, and a vocalist who sounded like a wailing banshee Evil Smile

I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I'm going to vote for Sabbath. They influenced many more bands and they had a sound, just like KC, that was completely their own. Both bands have also revised their sound in the beginning of the '80s.

These are two bands that shouldn't really compete for a vote, but both are quite a few notches above the vastly overrated Floyd.

Pink Floyd personally, but Crimson basically created prog. They are one of the pioneers.

KC, with Sabbath not far behind.

Crimson for me. ITCOTCK was a (if not "the") cornerstone of prog.
Sabbath was fundamental for the development of both heavy metal and stoner rock.
Floyd, while well respected for their early space/psychedelic rock, is mostly known today for bringing a simplified brand of prog for the masses. They are a prog gateway band, but they aren't as important/influential as the other two.

So: KC > BS > PF

Pink Floyd just slightly edging out KC for me. I like Black Sabbath a lot too though. The funny thing is PF is the only one of these bands I haven't seen live(although I just recently saw Roger Waters).

I'm not a King Crimson fan.. I'm all about Yes, Genesis, and ELP. But on this forum I will vote for them every time against those other two choices and just did so right here.

Dont get me wrong, I like and respect pink floyd but there just isnt enough content to get into.  They were too busy bickering and didn't put out enough music.  Not enough releases.  King Crimson has reinvented itself countless times and seems to be at the helm of the definition of prog.  And I know there are Pink Floyd fanatics that will hate me for this.  So go ahead and hate, but I still like them too.  Therefore, I voted for King Crimson.  (Sorry but never been a fan of Black Sabbath.  It is respectable stuff in its own right though).

Three excellent groundbreaking bands, but KC has to be a contender for the best rock band of all time, certainly the best progressive act IMO.

Regarding PF: how do you gauge quality vs quantity???
Anyway.... with all due respect to the Ummagumma boys (that I admit I'm a fan), in that regard I go with Black Sabbath the real creators of a whole new music man ... add to that a helluva groundbreaking strike of 6 great albums in a row!.......
PS: I'll be back and vote the day I get the guts to listen to an entire KC album hahaha

Pink Floyd for their excellent music in the 60s and 70s, I'm not fond of their subsequent material.

KC's sound in the 70s often gets bland and boring, too experimental and improvised, while lyrics are usually whatever. Also, I don't like the fact that they recorded on commercial grounds so many of their gigs. Pink Floyd have released a tiny amount of live albums.

I have to go with King Crimson on this one, not for the Metal Part, but for the inventiveness of the music . Pink Floyd is mostly blues, very well orchestrated, but blues none the less. Black Sabbath is the real Heavy Metal band here, and they were quite good at it.

I say it's better to have quality releases than rushed releases just to have a new album out soon. Besides, I don't really think their out-put is so small, specially in the 70's. Without counting them, I believe all 3 bands released about the same amount of albums since they began until the end of the 70's.

floyd and sabbath are odd ones for me... I respect each one's massive influence, but despite being a big fan of both bands' respective genres, I'm not a big fan of either band. They both did maximum half a dozen tracks each that I genuinely think are great. But I struggle listening to an entire album by either without getting bored.

KC wins on that basis!

Could be any of the three for influence or whatever - depending on how you approach it.

But among the popular bands that even people not into prog are aware of, King Crimson means the most to me personally. So logically I will have to vote for them as supreme pioneer.

^According to the "Emoticons" legend, means "Ermm" which to me roughly translates as momentary uncertainty. In this case, what band comes first with Crimso to follow? I suppose I could have just as easily used because AFlowerKingCrimson's post explained very little, and it didn't even address the thread's original question.

I think I did. I was referring to sound wise or to be more specific the heaviness factor. KC were at times almost metallish while Floyd rarely was and BS almost always were.

I voted for King Crimson over Pink Floyd with Black Sabbath nowhere. I only really care about Floyd circa 1973 to 1980 and simply don't bother with the Syd stuff, the psyche wanderings of the early albums all the boring AORish late Gilmour stuff. With Crimson I like their debut and last album and adore Red. I enjoy some of the other albums and the live shows they did later on. A much more interesting band. Never got into Sabbath but they helped create a whole genre of music so fair play to them.

Crim by a landslide.  I'll put their entire catalog up against any other band and the outcome is never in doubt.

Floyd were musically relevant from about 71-77, outside of that timeframe I find their material dicey as hell.   That said, there were many better bands releasing more notable work than Floyd in that 71-77 span.

Sabbath....I enjoy the first 4 albums, but I've never considered them a 'benchmark' group by any means.

PF > KC > BS

I can listen to all PF albums (although The Final Cut is a bit of a push)

I only like KC's first 7..

I like BS's first 6 tbh, then the first two Dio albums (although again, it's been a long, long time...)
