Which band or album or track made you sit up say "What IS this???" My earliest experiences were "Dance on a volcano" by Genesis and its unusual time sig and "Wish you were here" which i first heard on headphones and it blew my mind!!!

Nursery Cryme - particularly The Musical Box and particularly the end section. Still blows me away.

Yes's "South Side of the Sky" from Fragile, and still I think is one of their best and haunting tracks.  Very atypical harmonically and structurally, but that's what drew me into it.  I especially was intrigued by the Wakeman driven middle section with the eerie piano riff. I quickly went out and bought the whole album.

Then, I think the next band was Genesis, their Lamb Lies Down album.  "Back in NYC" has the strongest connotations for me, I was reading Neuromancer by William Gibson at the time, and the bizzare, near-future sci-fi sound was to forever be associated with this book for me (and vice-versa).

Then I discovered Pawn Hearts, and well, things really haven't been the same for me since.
