My choice is definitely Operation Mindcrime and I like the other one.

Operation Mindcrime

No idea why Operation Mindcrime is even considered prog (doesn't make it good or bad necessarily). Easily Images and Words, and I'm not even a particularly big fan of DT. A lot of 80's metal is rather dull to me, and Queenscryche is no exception.

Images and Words is very good. Some really exceptional songs and some songs I don't care about or even rather dislike, as with most DT albums. But I've still got to hear Operation Mindcrime. I guess getting some Queensryche and Fates Warning is my next step in Prog Metal (besides getting some more Devin Townsend ).

Even if I don't listen to Dream Theater for 15 years or so, I still prefer Images & Words to Operation Mindcrime.

But if you ask me, I will rather go and listen to Voivod's Nothing Face or Angel Rat... Evil Smile

What I have heard from Symphony X does just about nothing for me. I got first Iconoclast, which was the last album they had released when I bought it, and so it was available at the local store and had been reading several reviews from it and I found no song at all that I really liked. Then, since they are usually considered the second Prog Metal act (at least from USA) to check out after Dream Theater, I thought I should give them another try, and ordered The New Mythology Suite, since it's their best rated album... and still nothing. Well, Communion and the Oracle is very nice, but still there's tons of DT stuff I like much better. However, it's not like I hated them, they just didn't click with me... actually I believe DT have much more annoying songs that the most annoying I heard from Symphony X... but they also have songs I really love beyond anything I could expect SX being able to release.

Queensryche went downhill fast after Promised land (1994), the only albums of theirs I can recommend is Tribe (2003) and the two albums with the new vocalist.

Fates Warning with Ray Alder is worth exploring first, I rarely listen to their US Power years with John Arch (their first two albums are Iron Maiden influenced Smile).

I think Mindcrime is the better album as a metal album but DT has the better prog album. They're both classics though. Love em both
