I don't hate any kind of music, because it doesn't make much sense to hate something that isn't capable of hating you back.

I hate ignorance. Don't judge a book by its cover.

I don't hate N.E.R.D but I don't understand what all the the fuzz is about.

I think Dido is not so bad.

I really don't want to waste too much energy on hating people or things. I just don't listen to it if I think it's crap. But hey, others think prog is crap. To each his own.

Aquarius?? Super Slinky from the dutch guitar forum?

Anyway, I don't spend my time on hating music while there's so much beautiful music to listen to. Music I don't like, it just don't listen.

b.t.w. Eelco says hi to everyone, is there a welcome thread on this forum, I haven't noticed one yet?

Most hip hop is truly terrible. By I have time for Roots Manuver!! He breaks the Hip Hop mould by NOT bigging himself up. Instead he whinges about his inability to pull women, cause he's always drunk and mashed on pot and E. He's funny modest, and British. British hip hop is always more honest, and self satirising.

I hate when people clean an ashtray even if they see I have my cigarrette still lit.

I hate people who eat caviar and really hate it (I love caviar even when I can rarely afford it)

I hate when 5 salesmen ask you by turns: Do you want something? (If I want something I'll let them know)

I hate people who see you on the floor shouting on pain and asks : Did you fall?

I hate people who criticize a movie only because it's about Sci Fi

I hate people who hurt animals (starting with bullfight, the modern Roman Circus).

I hate people who claps when a plane is landing (It's the pilot duty to land, why in hell should people applaud him for doing his duty?)

I hate planes (but I have to use them 20 or 30 times a year).

I hate spam (both)

I hate people who drive their cars at 20 KPH in the fast lane.

Sorry, but talking about beer recalls the survey I read yesterday: Ireland is the champion in "average beer per person": 124,8 liter a year...Germany follows with 117,5 liter. Third place goes to Austria with 109,3 liter per person. British people consumed about 100 liter.

Sorry again but I don't think that you get better beer than in Germany or in the Czech Republik...

Any time my man, but you can get closer to me than L.A. Too many freaks there. Badgers are fine, carry-on only, they tend to burrow in the luggage compartment.

I'll fire up the Bar-be and ice up the Bass and Newcastle, as well as sweep the pool and arrange for a disco ball to hang from the top most post of the gazeebo. You'll feel right at home, my satellite gets BBC, wot?

This guy have been 50% of my life the past 3 years, and became my (and my boyfriends) hobby. We've done EVERYTHING Humperdinky! It's almost scary. I need a life! He sure is an entertainer, just not the kind he'd like to be (for me - not the old ladies)

I hate it when people say that Porcupine Tree are pop.  I dont see it and I really can't agree...yes lucas this is right at you Mr.  *points finger in your direction*

I also hate music people with closed minds to new ideas especially when it genius.  An example of this is the people at my school saying that Primus is just a group that has a bass player that shows off.  Primus wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for Ler and Tim YEA RETARDS!  (aimed at those people in school of course).

I also hate Thom Yorke's voice.  It just sucks so much.  How can people listen to Pyramid Song and say that it's actually good?  I think it's just so badly sung that people get confused and think it's great.

ok, I'm done my ranting...I feel happy.

I was refering to songs like "4 chords that made a milion" when I used the term "pop" to define PT's music. I know they are labeled as "space rock", but even if it's the case I don't see anything exceptional or exciting in their music. They just don't reach the quality of other space-rock bands such as Gong (regarding "Angel's egg" and "You") or PF. I join Maani's point of view about this band : overrated.

RADIOHEAD are one of the most talented bands of the 20th/21st century - and as for Thom's voice, it's the voice that launched a thousand clones - just because YOU don't like it that doesn't mean it sucks and everyone else should hate it - and picking on one song out of their catalogue is just dumb. Can anyone say "Creep", "Street Spirit", "Karma Police", "Everything in it's Right Place"?

If you're going to express a negative opinion about such a formidably influential and talented band, please be good enough to give some kind of reasoning. Just saying "it's bad and I don't like it" shows crass ignorance. It's a bit like saying "Bach sucks because I don't like his organ".

/end rant. I feel much better for that

Well said, Cert - as has been said before, reasoned debate at all times; you don't like something, fine, but give reasons & context; on the flip side, do the same when praising music!

Tiger prawns and T-bones, as well as a Filet Mignon (for me) are awaiting your arrival. Sorry about the ice , I so dearly require training regarding the proper temperature for said ale. Hey country haters- I used to belong to your ranks until I discovered classic country...the same celtic and early anglo influences that you'll find in Tull, among others. Not to mention the killer players, especially slide and steel guitarists and bluegrass (guitar, madolin, and banjo) pickers. Leo Kottke, one of the greatest acoustic guitarists ever, was a big influence on Steve Howe- if you like "The Clap", you'll like Kottke's jazz-meets-country sound.

I agree, most country does suck- especially the pop-rock influenced garbage you usually hear. But that goes for most music, doesn't it? The only reason I call myself a prog fan is because I only think 75% of it sucks, rather than the usual 95% in most other genres.

You know what I hate? Trying to read the music credits in movies. Even if you can locate the song you were interested in in that huge list of tiny letters, the channel it's on will squash it into an unreadable rectangle so they can fit in commercials.

Either that. or a real outspoken gay man who loves prog... nope, thats pretty much impossible.. so yes I am female.

Now in regard to country music.  There is a big difference between country, blue grass and American folk music.  I'm originally from NC.. my father was a pretty good blue grass banjo player.. and he could also play a really mean mouthharp. I just preferred he never sing and play at the same time!

I hated the usual country... Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, George Strait, Buck Owens... that type, but I loved Patsy Cline... go figure

I also love American folk and spirituals.. and even gospel.  Just don't want Reba singing it....

It is strange and this trouble me :

The last 2 "LOVE" threads (top 15 albums and 5 best instrumentalists) have respectively 20 and 37 answers.

But this thread of "HATE" has 60 answers...

You have just to forget them and buy CD without drum machines.

It is the first step, a constructive action, "HATE" is useless

I have to disagree- HATE as an obsession is very bad, but only as much as any other fanatic blindness, whether it's positive or negative in origin. However, HATE as a motivating force is among the most basic human impulses, able to motivate us long after more pleasant feelings have abandoned us. Trying to remove hate from our emotional palette is useless, and one of the worst mistakes of the Western theological tradition. Trying to squash negativity often just lets it fester forgotten, insidiously coloring all other feelings, and getting ever harder to separate and deal with in a reasonable manner.

So go ahead and hate drum machines- it's a quirky character trait other people may find interesting, anyway- as long as you don't end up stalking Boss and Alesis executives, or campaigning to blacklist or confine drum machine users. Better yet, find out what makes you hate them, and come to some sort of emotional compromise that you can live with.

Q: why is a drum machine better than a real drummer?

A: you only have to punch the correct rhythm into the machine once.

"The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them; that's the essence of inhumanity."

Yes James Lee, I understand you (I try)

But "HATE" was never a motivating force for me. "HATE" always destructed me when I felt it.

I don't want to be sexist (I "HATE" this) but maybe it is one of the differences between men and women ??

And about drum machines :

For me the most important is not the fact a music use or not drum machines but the way drums machines are employed.

It is always the same problem of the man and the tool...

"Q: why is a drum machine better than a real drummer?

A: you only have to punch the correct rhythm into the machine once."

Yes but in electronic music you have sofwares that are able to make imperfections to the correct rhythm of the drum machines (from 90ies I think).

The result ?

More "human", more life in the beat, more groove...

But for me : "Q: why is a drum machine better than a real drummer?

"A: a drum machine never drinks beer and never looks at my chest"

On some of Allan Holdsworth's albums, he credits the drummer as Mac Hine. I didn't really give it much thought, the tunes always sounded good to me.... Then I realized Mac Hine was Machine.... I still like the tunes.  I don't hate them... But "live" a REAL drummer adds some flash to a show.

I just saw Erik Norlander and he was really great with the "Wall of Doom" but the interplay wasn't sorely missed. Too clinical...

I don't know where I'd be without my CDs of drum samples and software drum machines - my bedroom is a bit small for a drumkit!

Once I've put my ideas together, I can then find a real drummer to make sense of what I botched together.

Drum machines worked for the Orb, the Prodigy, Kraftwerk (to name but 3 awesome electronic bands).

I gotta plug my favorite band yet again...The Cocteau Twins used a drum machine for most of their career, and many of their best tracks now sound a little dated solely for that reason.

It's all about what works for the music- Norman Cook, among others, can get more expression and funkiness out of his machines than many real drummers could ever manage.

Many of the problems that people have with drum machines are similar to the complaints that were made when synthesizers first began to get mainstream (thanks mainly to Floyd, Wakeman, Emerson, and other prog pioneers). The British musicians association even tried to ban the Mellotron! I have a feeling that if our beloved bands had access to drum machines, you would certainly have heard one from time to time, especially for spacey or futuristic accents.

My wife wonders what this debate is about- she seems to think that 'progressive' music should exploit the latest technology. I had to explain to her that most (not all, don't jump on me!) prog is based on what had been 'progressive' in the 60s and 70s. It is called progressive ROCK, after all. If you went to a club or trendy music store and just asked for "progressive", they'd most likely assume you meant progressive house and send you to BT or Spooky.

Yes but no...

It was true in the early beginning when KRAFTWERK was only formed by Ralf Hutter and (und) Florian Schneider but after Wolfgang Flur and Karl Bartos joined the band.

These 2 guys played "Electronic Percussion"

Even I never closely checked it I think they are real men , not drum machines.

I saw a gig (not a jig - thks Peter ), Radioactivity era. Wolfgang Flur and Karl Bartos played effectively themself electronic percussions.

One of the devices they used was strange. I try to explain.

It was infra-red or laser rays that the musicians cut with their hands.

Each time a ray was cuted, this made a percussion sound (one sound per ray).

It was funny to saw them moving on stage like the guy with flags on the tarmak of an airport or aircraft carrier or a policeman at a cross-roads

Caught! - But to make a sound, those electronic drums had to replay a drum sample, as they could make no distinct noise of their own

Didn't Jean-Michel Jarre use a similar light-operated instrument?

Well I saw Pamela Kurstin recently at Moogfest doing one hell of a job playing that theramin.  The sound doesn't actually do all that much for me.. but the gracefulness of her hand movements and the playing was just stunning...

Also, I'm not quite sure what instrument Joe Gallivan was playing... but it was sort of like a theramin.. played with drumsticks... and he looks like Frank Zappa.. so overall it was a very interesting evening... I get all that and Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and Jordan Rudess playing at one event.

Re: Drum machines & drums mixed to the front of the recording mix.

I've greatly enjoyed several of Bruce Hornsby's albums released during the 90's e.g. Harbor Lights. However, even though I have a couple of BH & the Range albums, I've not given them any airing for many years  - until last Monday night. In particular  Scenes from The  Southside album. Every damned track  starts off, or after a rambling keyboard intro, bangs in with virtually the same drum effect (a machine or human?) and mixed right in front of everything else: seeming to me to scream out 'Hey late 80's production values!!!'  - goodness how it is dated. I am afraid that album is getting the boot, every track is spoilt badly by those dreadful drums which quite a number of  folks thought cool 15 years ago.

Love drum machines  Great fun, and thats from a drummer!

Mind you every drum machine I've ever met has been better than me.

Some of the best music of the 90's involved sampled drums and electronics generally. The Orb has been mentioned, and they were brilliant (most of the time) but also Future Sound of London, Global Communication, Plaid, Boards of Canada..This was the best music of the 90's IMO. To my mind that is 'Neo-Prog' if anything has to be at all. Not the likes of IQ et al, they are PROG ROCK as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, I waffle. Long live sampled percussion!!

Hate is avery strong word.

I hate anyone who hates dogs.I have two very remarkable Australian Cattle Dogs. They are very obedient and well behaved. I have trained them very well to perform a variety of tasks. They are quick learners. I put them above the German Shpehard in cannine intelligence and the Australian authorities have just came to their senses and started training them as police dogs.

Hate is a very strong word. There is too much of it in the world today.

And I'm with Velvet: I hate 99% of everything and especially the greatest monster in the 13.7 billion year history of the universe: My Fellow Man. There are no words with which to portray the extent and depth of my hatred. Like a billowing thunderhead of darkest red compressed into the acid coals of my rancid heart, like the November wind's nighttime torrent wailing in insane outlasting triumph as it batters the houses of the secure, safe and pious, like the outcast profane misbirthed monstrosity lurking in the mouldering underbrush deep in the ancient groves, like the rusted, envenomed dagger twisting in the steaming open carcass of young lovers...every hidden malice and savored spite are mine, every cold-blooded plot and mute instinctive snarl...for when the darkness descends and each of you face your ultimate end, utterly alone, the whispered mockings of spite will lift in charnel song, celebrating hate's immortality as your feeble consciousness inexorably slips from you, never to return...
