Putting aside all the corruption and other nonsense of the Olympic committee and such, anyone pay attention to the Olympics?

I usually will put it on some, but mute the sound and listen to music while watching.  Enjoy the different sports that are not typically mass marketed and do not see very often and the drama plus emotion that may occur during some of the competition.  For most, I would think, this is their moment to shine or fail after training for 4 years.

Curious if anyone keeps up with it.

Opening ceremonies?   Volleyball?   Yeah, no.

I'll take some judo though, and gymnastics, marathon, decathlon -

Nope.  Would rather watch the local high school/college sports, hockey and football mostly.

I do enjoy figure skating when I happen to catch them.

pretty much same here... I always found the Winter Games to be far more interesting than the Summer games.

I'll ignore the powder puff personality pieces from NBC and all the major sports that have no reason to be there (tennis, golf, basketball, etc). I'll pick and choose the stuff I don't see for 4 years, archery, volleyball, swimming & the like. As a Brit living in the USA I do find the myopic focus on the US athletes frustrating. Yes I know there is a wonderful girl from Iowa, whose mother had to sacrifice to get her to the Olympics, in third but who won the bloody race?

LOL

and you hit the nail on the head of the real turn off for me of the summer games... the proliferation and focus of major sports (and professional players)  that simply shouldn't be there. Losing what should be the focus.. sports you only really see every 4 years.. but people who truly do bust their asses to have this one moment in the sun... instead.. saturation of how many dunks and ass kicking  the basketball team threw down on the Chinese.

yawn...

I watched the last half of the U.S women's soccer victory over France yesterday, and then about 5 minutes of U.S. v. China in basketball, yawned, and went on to do other things. I probably won't watch again.

Nope. Except for the gross water thing they warned the athletes about. I'll hear how many medals Canada's got no matter where I am though.

Fun fact: Canada advertises number of medals on the news/in newspapers over what kind of medal. So we'll see "Canada wins first medal!!" on the front page but will have to turn to page 11 to see what kind of medal it was.

She was amazing indeed, fun to watch.  Enjoyed the gymnastics last night and the swimming/diving events.

I won't go near the basketball, tennis, or golf events as the pros make those boring and should not be in the games.  Never understood beach volleyball getting in as an Olympic event, other than the obvious visual reasons...

I guess there are number of head scratching events that get in via some back getting scratched somewhere in the IOC.  But all that crap aside, I still will watch some of the classic events with the sound muted to avoid sappy USA media stories while listening to prog on my headphones.

Once every four years, I enjoy watching swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field, etc...  I think that wow this is kind of fun and that I should start watching the weekly wide world of sports or whatever the program is now that shows the weekly tournaments for these sports.  However, I never do.

I am not an overly patriotic sort, but I do find that having an American to cheer for makes the events more interesting to watch than events that don't have Americans in them.  My biggest turnoff to the Olympics are all of the judged competitions.  They always seem to feel more "fixed" than non-judged competitions.  Ratings seem to be based as much on reputation as they are on the actual performance.

I've been watching when I can. So far I've only see gymnastics and badminton. Why won't they show anything else. I enjoy the gymnastics, though pretty sick of swimming. I love to play badminton. I'd love to see that, but as it's a bigger sport on the other side of the Pacific, I expect it will get short shrift, or be aired here at 4 a.m. I used to fence. I'd like to see fencing. I don't have much time, though, to follow it too much. I need google it or something and get a schedule of events.

^ I have not seen the Badminton, that would be fun to see.

^^ Yes Jim, Simone Biles was awesome!  I have never seen a woman on the floor exercise fly so high in the air and she nails the landings too.  Love to watch the women gymnastics, the men also.  I can't imagine doing the iron cross on the rings, my arms would just pull clean out of the sockets.

Besides Phelps, Ledecky has been incredible in the swimming.  Saw the Maya Dirado win by 1/100th of a second coming from behind.

I think it was awesome seeing Puerto Rico winning a gold for the first time. Monica Puig played her heart out and the reaction of genuine joy upon winning makes me very glad that she was able to pull off upset after upset.

Pretty pumped for tomorrow's Men's gold match. Hoping Del Potro can finish his great run.

If you have cable I think one of the sports networks is covering some other things.  What I miss seeing are the combat sports;  judo, fencing, Greco-Roman, boxing, Taekwondo, etc.

On the video it's clearly a stumble rather than a dive.

Anyway, diving doesn't help, by the contrary.

You come so fast hat it's better to cross the line running.

In order to dive, you have to stop and then jump, this makes you loose a couple centesimal.

In Perú we did an experiment, and the diver always lost time.

Just think...If diving helped, wouldn't all the 100 m. runners dive?

Can't believe how many are dissing the Olympics here!!!

Greatest Show On Earth!!!!

The gymnastics this year has been utterly amazing.  Truly outstanding competitions, performances and conducted with such utter respect between individuals.  A joy to watch.

Being unemployed, I can watch TV all day long if I want (except that I have found more interesting things to do, like going to the movies or to the museums).
However, while I don't have a lot of things to say against Olympics, I'm beginning to be bored and annoyed by the non-stop coverage in France: Olympics on France 2, Olympics on France 3 and Olympics on France 4 (the three main public TV channels), and the other channels talk about it in their news bulletins before any international information...
Urgh, can't wait for the end of the Olympics!

Posted By: Dean
Date Posted: August 19 2016 at 03:31
^ alas it is all down to money. The TV channels pay hundreds of millions (euros, dollars, pounds) to the IOC for TV rights so they have to get their money's worth even when there is no sport to actually broadcast. In the UK they give more air-time to people talking about the games than they do to the events themselves.

I say I'm not going to watch the games but I always do, either because it's damn near unavoidable due to the coverage or because a Brit athlete is in with a chance of winning a medal. After years of watching our team struggle to come away with less than a dozen medals in total I'll admit that it's gratifying to see us sitting second on the medal table ahead of China and Germany. But here again money rears its ugly head, however this time as a clear indication of how investing heavily in sport on a national level reaps rewards, prior to 2004 British sport was underfunded and lacked the infrastructure to nurture world-class athletes as it failed to adapt to the change from a strictly amateur to a professional sports contest over the 4 previous games, now it is supported by investment from the National Lottery with a staggering sum of money each year - as long as your sport has a chance of winning a medal. Now more than ever money dominates the games, it's a multi-billion dollar industry that sells anything they can print the 5-ring logo onto.

Besides the money and corruption game of the Olympics, and the idiotic Lochte drama of the USA swimming team, I did enjoy quite a few moments of the actual competition. I really don't put much stock in the medal count as the competition of the people who only have this one moment to shine or win a medal is kinda cool.  However, I do wish they would televise more of the less main stream popular events like events I have never seen before, or Judo, weight lifting, pole vault, javelin, hammer throw, high jump, etc....

Although, I do think I like Winter Olympic games more as they seem more adventurous.  Seems more fun to watch (muted) while listening to prog Thumbs Up.

I`m from Brazil. I have to say that i liked. One of first times that i watched TV to support my country in something.
The real problem were the buildings to the delegations, but excluding that. Cool.
Brazil beat some records too.

Two whole years before the winter games.  That's nutty.  Didn't it used to be both seasons every four years?
