What do you think are the five best songs/epics/instrumentals from your three favourite prog bands/artists?
It'll be interesting to see what people think. I could make a list myself but my fave prog artists change every hour.LOL

Someone's got to make a start here, lists lists lists.

Can/Holger Czukay: Spoon; Paperhouse; Yoo Doo Right; Traeum Mal Wieder; Mirage (Remix)
King Crimson: Starless; Thela Hun Ginjeet; Industry; Dinosaur; Sleepless
I leave out Art Zoyd because most of their albums work as a unit and I can't really tear five tracks out of them, so I give the third spot instead to the Cardiacs: Big Ship; Signs; Mare's Nest; The Ever So Closely Guarded Line; In a City Lining

The problem with the question is that it would take hours of auditing to form an honest five answers.  I'll stew on it but don't expect results.

It's very tough, yeah, so my approach was to not be too perfectionist.

The Ancient / Ritual / Time into Great Gig / Moving / Symphony in Blue

As David said, a nearly impossible question to answer with certainty.

Very nice. No overlap with my list but I've considered Oh Yeah and Mother Sky, too, and you made me realise that I haven't listened enough yet to The Lost Tapes, Dead Pigeon Suite is such a gem! (I was close to putting Vitamin C in, but couldn't resist having Holger's stunning solo works on the list.)

Thanks! I think there's about five quarters worth of tunes ++ on The Lost Tapes that's on par with the material on their classic albums. So I had to rip it and sort of make a double album (of 2LP's-length) of highlights out of the original 3 hours and 16 minutes compiled of music to fully enjoy the genuine gems.

+You made me realize I haven't listened enough to Holger's solo works - although I've thoroughly enjoyed most of what I've heard.

Nice! Thought about them but gave up thinking about selecting five. But I know Génération sans Futur - title track is my absolute fav.

Here's another two I considered. I would have choose both Vous le Saurez en Temps Voulu + Jack The Ripper from Heresie (but not La Faulx), Malaise & ... two more from their first three albums.

KC: Fracture, Sailors Tale, Lizard, Starless ... + I don't know too many options

This is IMPOSSIBLE! I CAN'T DO JUST THREE!

DAVID SYLVIAN - 1. “Weathered Wall,” 2. “Nostalgia,” 3. “Brilliant Trees,” 4. “World Citizen (I Won’t Be Disappointed),” 5. “Wave,” (6. “Orpheus”)

JAN AKKERMAN - 1. “Streetwalker,” 2. “Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!” 3. “La Cathédrale de Strasbourg,” 4. “Soft Vanilla/Hard Vanilla,” 5. “Hocus Pocus,” (6. “Eruption”)

RENAISSANCE - 1. “A Trip to the Fair,” 2. “The Sisters,” 3. Can You Hear Me?” 4. “Prologue,” 5. “Things I Don’t Understand.”

BILL BRUFORD - 1. “Heart of the Sunrise, 2. “In the Dead of Night” suite, 3. “The Sahara of the Snow, Parts 1 & 2,” 4. “Discipline,” 5. “Making a Song and Dance.”

AND -- If truth be told, my two favorite bands of all-time--which are not considered "prog" by PA but which I consider "progressive"--and who have never let me down:

COCTEAU TWINS - 1. “Pink Orange Red,” 2. “Cico Buff,” 3. “She Will Destroy You,” 4. “Pur,” 5. “Pandora,” 6. “Amelia,” 7. “Quisquose,” 8. “Oomingmak,” 9. “Know Who You Are at Every Age,” 10. Carolyn’s Fingers,” 11. “My Truth” 12. “Ribbed and Veined,” 13.”Blue Bell Knoll” 14. “Sultitan Itan” 15. “Ivo” 16. “Aloysius” 17. “Great Spangled Fritilary,” 18. “Eggs and Their Shells,” 19. “Pale Clouded White,” 20. “Donimo” and TOO MANY MORE TO NAME!

and

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - Way too many to begin listing--multiple songs from over 11 albums--but here's 10: 1. "The Paris Match," 2. "Walking Wounded," 3. "Shoot Me Down," 4. "Small Town Girl," 5. "Each and Every One," ""Cross My Heart," "Rollercoster," "Goodbye Sunday," "Sean," "Get Me," "Shadow on a Harvest Moon, "Never Could Have Been Worse," "Blue Moon Rose," "Tears All Over Town," "Flipside," "Hatfield 1980," "Before Today," "Wrong," "This Love (Not For Sale)," "Sugar Finney," "Tender Blue," Fasscination," "Downhill Racer," "Oxford Street," "Cross My Heart and Hope to Die" Frost and Fire," "Dreamy," "Too Happy," The Night I Heard Caruso Sing," . . . man! I love this band!

Once again I've lost all self-control, created games without frontiers. I am the intruder.

Sorry.
