Topic: Require reviews for 1 star ratings

I apologize if this has already been submitted as a solution. I looked at a few threads complaining about "bad reviewers" and such, but I didn't see any with this possible solution. Like the topic says, it would be nice if it was required for people to explain their 1 star ratings with a review. Obviously this would probably be difficult to retro-activate, but it's just a thought. Also maybe the same treatment for 5 star reviews?

If you dislike an album enough to warrant it 1 star, then you must have at least 100 words to say why...

I imagine most of these 1 star reviews would look something like this:

OMG this sucks, it succcccccccccccccccccccccks, its so bad. I dont like this music and other people do. wah wah wahhhh. my friends all like this but I donut. I want a doughnut!

Perhaps it would be better if a clever one sentence review would be required. Like when Charles Baudelaire remarked about Richard Wagner's music:

"I love Wagner, but the music I prefer is that of a cat hung up by its tail outside a window and trying to stick to the panes of glass with its claws."

Personally, if I consider an album to be only worth one star, then I don't waste my time writing a review. And I certainly don't want to mention it at all, hoping that it will eventually starve for lack of attention and die in the gutter.

personally, if I think an album is 1 star, then I wouldn't even waste my time listening to it / rate it at all.

How would you know it was only worth 1 star if you never heard it? Wink

only time I could see myself giving a one star review is when a band I love does me wrong somehow, in which case I'm sure I'd have 100 words to say about it

^ Wait a few years, you'll probably find something and it may not be a favorite band dropping the ball, it might just be really awful.   But yeah I'd think even a 1-star rating deserves a hundred words.

Ideally we'd ditch the rating only feature entirely, but it will never happen (owners rule).

Agreed. It's too easy to give a rating for an album, but if you are forced to actually think about it and justify your yourself, you may find that you're just being an irrational angry t**t

Hey a well-written bad review is fun to read and a blast to write, not to mention potentially informative.  Don't dismiss it.

It would certainly be nice, as many albums can get 1-star or 5-star ratings from fanboys or haters. I've given things 1 star, but I am planning on writing reviews for all the albums I rate at some point.

I believe that a rating, no matter how low or high, deserves justification. I'm not the world's best reviewer, but when I rate an album, I feel an explanation is warranted. I do my best (when I'm not drunk.....). And I am careful with my selections, as I don't want to waste my hard-earned on 1 (or even 2) star albums.
BTW - Love Beach and The Works volumes are 3's for me (Volume 1 almost worth a 4).........

I don't give ratings at all unless accompanied by a review.

I've only written a few one-two star reviews, for a lot of reasons.

1. It doesn't feel good to put down someone's efforts.

2. Everyone's life comes with enough negatives, so why would I want to be the cause of upset and hurt to someone else? They've put in effort to create something, who am I to make them question themselves, if it doesn't personally click with me?

3. Unless you're just a snarky a****le or smart-ass kid (oftent hose two go together! , it's difficult to put a lot of effort into something negative.

At least coming from a progressive-rock point-of-view, at they very least there will usually be a lot of positives to appreciate - ie great playing, ambitious arrangements, etc - so those can be focused on rather than the bad.

(Heh, for instance, I was recently able to sneakily give the latest Dream Theater album a 5 star review even though I pretty much hated the friggin' thing!)

I even gave what I thought was a pretty fair (and encouraging) 3 star review once, and the artist got in touch saying `Oh my God, you hated my album??' This dumbfounded me, but even though I must have re-read it a few times just to be sure I remembered what I'd written, it still felt awful to think that it hurt someone.

Do I think my constant reviews become a blur of 5, 4, 3 star reviews, and wish I could throw in a few more `lousy' ones to avoid getting predictable? Absolutely! But it's just not worth my time, not worth the disappointment to the artist who took their time to compose that music that I didn't personally respond to, and life's too short to get a kick out of putting others down.

^ Funny, I think a 3 is a relatively good score (as it says on the packet).......
Has to be really good for a 4, and something really special for a 5........

Ya-huh, that's what I thought!

I suppose it comes back to the whole `half star' argument. To some it seems there's an ocean of difference between a `3' and `4' star rating, so perhaps if it had had that precious half-star in the middle, it might have looked more appealing?

Yeah, but...I still maintain a 3 is perfectly fine!

For me, here are the meanings of my ratings:

5      Perfect, all tracks are excellent, nothing to throw out
4.5   Near perfection, lacking just a bit
4      Very good album
3.5   Good album, maybe a bit uneven with weaker passages
3      Correct, maybe uneven with tracks I don't like, but overall pleasant
2.5   Some good tracks, but unfortunately in slightly insufficient quality
2      Only a few good passages
1      I'm sorry I did not find any good moments (I did not use 1.5 until now)

Concerning the 1/2 star reviews, I only write such reviews for artists that I overall enjoy and to whom I would give 3-5 stars for their other albums. I don't think about writing severe reviews for artists that I'm not really fan of.

The one-star reviews you wrote are really fun to read and not that negative... for a one-star review Tongue

I agree with Tom, since I don't have much inspiration to write, I wouldn't spend it on an album I hate.

You know, Sam, I always remember you saying that to me before! "That Mythos `Grand Prix' review you wrote was hilarious...." .

I'll keep that in mind! Who knows, maybe in a less coherent moment I'll knock out a tirade against the second Eddison's Childran album, or maybe Comedy of Error's `Fanfare and Fantasy'

Then again, maybe Area's `Event '76' might be my next one, what unlistenable rubbish (which I sadly paid $25 for off a local vendor on Ebay)!

Sorry my friend, Meltdowner, I don't know your name ( )........ Real sorry......(Sam??)....
Look, my assessment means very little, regardless.
All I can say is that regardless of the 70's magic ...... I'll place a review and give it some background ...........(realistically, I suck........$

^^ I don't think you could listen to the whole Edisson's Children album to write the review LOL

Just heard a couple of minutes of that Area album, it sounds really awful. I remember reading Scott's recent review of it, it was quite fun to read. Tongue

Yeah, Sam, I bought that Area album without listening to a second of it on Youtube. I just saw it, thought `An Italian prog album?! Listed by a Melbourne vendor in Australia?! I could buy it and have it on my doorstep a day later!!!'

Jokes on me, it was unlistenable garbage and I totally understand why the vendor was ditching it!
