I am fairly new to prog music, with about a dozen albums.  I have King Crimson's first album, In the Court.  What should I buy next by King Crimson?

Get the albums in this order: (recommended)

  • Lark's Tongues In Aspic

  • Starless and Bible Black
  • Red
  • Lizard
  • USA
  • Islands

Then, you can buy "Discipline", "Thrak" etc.

Depends what songs or musical elements did you like on that album?

I liked everything except for moonchild after about three minutes.  It's a little...boring.

It's funny, I have three King Crimson albums now but ITCOTCK is still on my shopping list! I introduced the band into my life with Larks' Tongues and it worked out great, really love that record. I next bought Starless and Bible Black, which at first made me go "hmmm..." though I have come around to it more since then. The title track still gives me a bit of a hard time, I must admit. Yet these two records are of a fairly similar nature. The third and latest KC record added to my collection was Discipline which I really like, even tough it's a world apart from Larks' Tongues.

Just follow your instincts, Rileydog; other people really can't tell you what you will end up liking as in many cases there doesn't seem to be a strict logic to music preferences... Oh, and read a couple of reviews, that could be to some help as well.  No to mention those downloads if you are equipped with that possibility. I am not, sadly, so I always make "blind" purchases when it comes to music, especially progressive rock. My very simple and very intuitive method has worked splendidly so far, I'm happy to report

I agree with CX-2...Beat is a fine album, granted not there best, but still damn good and should be explored.

    Anyway, suggestions:

    Lark's Toungues and Red
    Discipline
    The Power To Believe
    In the Wake

    Then you can explore:

    Lizard
    Starless And Bible Black
    THRAK
BEAT  and Three Of A Perfect Pair

Recommend for waiting till the end:

    Islands
    ConstruKciton Of Light

Absent Lovers is said to be a great live CD from the 80s formation, but i have yet to hear it.

USA is also a good idea, if you like the 70s version.
