can someone hook me up with some great postrock masterpieces? i already have all godspeed you! black emperor albums and ( ) by sigur ros. what are great albums that must not be missed? also, can you tell me some cool postrocklike bands that are not on this site maybe? would be great, thanks! |

Flying Saucer Attack was just added here...check them out. Distance and
New Lands are the best albums. Mogwai's Rock Action is an awesome post-rock CD. Before there was post-rock, there was The Church. Hologram of Baal is a good album for post-rockers to enjoy. |

TORTOISE: Millions now living will never die. First track (Djed) is excellent, with influences from krautrock to minimalism. Hard to get into at first listens, though. Very cool rhythmic ideas (in fact, almost the entire band can play percussion live). They're also good at creating atmospheres. TNT album from this band is even more popular, it's also recommended ------------- "...I like the way the music goes...there's a few good guys who can play it right..." |

MONO - Walking cloud and depp red sky, Flag fluttered and the sun shined This would have to be the best offering of postrock so far that I have come across. I wasn't very impressed with Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed has just gone the way of boring. Mogwai is good, but I don't feel anything of theirs quite tops this release. ------------- Coalinga knows how to party. |

Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun, or however you spell that... A few more bands no one has mentioned yet:
Do Make Say Think - Their latest Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn is my favorite. Looser and jazzier than most post-rock bands. Shalabi Effect - More psychedelic and jammy than other post-rockers; The Trial of St-Orange is their masterpiece imho, but they're all good. Tanakh - Slow, moody, smoky post-rock with some vocals. Dieu Deiul is the one to go for. Gorgeous stuff. Tarentel - Their early stuff is like Mogwai but a little more minimalistic, sometimes almost droney. A silver mount zion's "Born into trouble as the sparks fly upwards" is brilliant. and if you want mogwai, get "Government Comissions" check out my review (its the only one) and decide if you want it. |

I agree about that last bit...not only are the horns really tense and melodic, reminiscent of King Crimson and VanderGraaf Generator, IMO, but the playing overall has a more improv-ed feel I think is really effective for the post-rock aesthetic. I also agree about A Silver Mt. Zion - Born intp Trouble is a really well arranged album, very beautiful but gripping throughout. I think their third full length "This is Our Punk Rock," Thee Broken Satellites Gather and Sing, is not liked by the prog community because of the full-time use of vocals, most of which are kind of drunken and off-key and sometimes vaguely squealed- very soulful, IMO, but not prog-familiar. Nevertheless, the songs on this album are also VERY well arranged, and instrumental sections are well interspersed with the vocal sections to keep things fresh. hypnotic post rock, I'd say, and very distinguishable from the Godspeed! mold. Explosions in the Sky is plenty energetic and plenty beautiful, but the lack of instrumental textures besides familiar amplifier settings for redundant riffs really cuts the shelf-life of this band as extended listen material. |

Somebody already mentioned Tortoise - 5 albums to date, none of them bad but as Mr Krinkle said Millions Now Living... and TNT are probably their best so far. Out of the same stable is Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quartet, which is more a kind of jazz-post-rock or post-jazz-rock kind of affair. The basic duo consists of a drummer/vibes player (who sometimes plays both simultaneously) and a cornet player who also uses computers and electronics. The trio includes a bassist, and the quartet a guitarist as well.
