Over the past two months, 29 users have submitted http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=105030" rel="nofollow - lists of their favourite albums of all time ,

To these albums 282359 points have been awarded, and over the next week or two, we're going to find out where those points have fallen, answering the question: what is the Progarchives Forum's favourite album of all time for 2015/16??

Before you all flood the topic with anticipation, I've also got something to say on the subject of how the points will be calculated. It'll be a little different to previous occasions on this board, when the system employed was #1 = 200pts, #2 = 199pts and so on, because experience with this kind of thing on other boards has suggested that that's not the best way to do it and here's an example of why:

Imagine you have five people submitting lists. Four of them vote #1 Shannon Noll's 'That's What I'm Talking About' , while all five vote for T. Swizzle's '1989' at #30. If we're trying to determine which albums are the collective favourites of the five surely Shazza, with near-unanimous #1s, should place higher than Taylor? Nope. Taylor gets 5 x 170 = 850, while Shannon gets 4 x 200 = 800, and is robbed of his glory again, just like on Australian Idol.
The point is, with the above method the points awarded stay so high for so long, and decrease so slowly, that the positioning of albums in the lists doesn't really matter that much- what matters is just how many times they've been listed at least somewhere; ie emphasising albums that are at least liked by the vast majority over people's favourites. The solution to this, as employed by other boards I've been to, is to apply a curve such that the points given drops off more quickly at the top of the rankings, giving the top more weight- in our case, such that #50, our minimum number of entries for a list, receives about 100 points instead of 150, and continues on from there.

Now, before you complain, I actually tested all this out with the data from one of the previous tournaments prior to beginning this one, and it doesn't actually make all that much difference- albums might be shifted around a bit, but largely remain around the same ranking (and, in fact, the top 10 of this tournament is identical either way...), which really suggests that what the vast majority of us like and what many of us rank highly are largely the same. But it makes me feel better, and will make things slightly more accurate and more interesting. Feel free to ask questions if you have any.

Iappreciate your explanation of the methodology.  Most of us are probably geeky enough to get it.

So I'd think that a single nomination can get an album in the top 400 - I'm pretty sure I was the only one who had Astor Piazzolla - New Tango, Zero Hour on my list, at rank  3, and that gave it rank 385 overall.

Comsat Angels - Waiting for a Miracle appeared on one other list apart from mine, I think on both lists somewhere between 30 and 70, and that brings it to rank 323.

Just to get a feel for how much it takes...

Thanks a lot for the work!

The 200 point mark was reached at #358-352, so everything after that obviously requires at least two votes; but most of the albums before it in the top 400 have more than one vote as well (since the ones that don't have to have been ranked #4 or higher to make it so far).

Dean was the other user who voted for Waiting for a Miracle, and the ranks were 32 and 58, so spot on.

Love how the list is looking so far. Very eclectic! It's also very amusing to see where albums rank exclusively because of how I rated them. i.e. Rayuela, any southern rock album LOL

Thanks for undertaking this Kazza3 and I highly anticipate the top 300!

Let's begin. The comparisons on the right are to the http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=60440&KW=results&PN=1" rel="nofollow - last tournament in 2009 - seeing as I only have access to the top 400 of that tournament, 'unlisted' means the album didn't appear in that 400 (and has effectively risen by a whole bunch). Also noted are albums released since entries closed for that competition (March 2009). The rankings are pretty jumpy this far down the list, where a single vote could drastically change an album's position, but will get less so as we go on.

Right, I knew I'd forgotten something. Obviously to compile the list I had to sort through everything like spelling errors, inclusion of a 'the' prefix, acronyms, etc, so that points for an album weren't split and so on, and I thought I'd done that thoroughly. While writing out 300-250 I discovered a couple of errors that I'd missed, where artists had done albums by the same name and the points had been added together. So by fixing that, everything behind them was bumped up a few ranks, and I had forgotten to edit the teaser. Sorry!

I think I was the only one who included Tracy Chapman's self-titled first album on my list, and it made the top 400. It was 22 on my list, so pretty high up.

I had Zero Hour on my list.

Tamijo ranked it #94- a single #22 ranking would've placed it around 640.

Yeah, the number of albums taking a big hit in the rankings is surprising. I don't remember the like sof Close to the Edge popping up too often high up on lists either so it could be an interresting top 10.

It would be interesting (although probably a lot of work) to do this annually.  I wouldn't get too excited about the results. Given the limited data, results are going to be unstable/statistically unreliable.  that doesn't stop them from being interesting however.

I don't think the previosuly unlisted albums need an indicator of how far they've risen, for instance I know that surprisingly Depois do Fim received zero votes in the previous incarnation of this poll (they were the only top 20 album to not get any votes last time around so I'm very happy to see them do well here now) so it really was completely unlisted last time.

I mean, even if Depois du Fim was completely unlisted last time, ie not making anyone's top 200, that just means it was effectively ranked below 3000 or how ever many albums were included, along with every other unmentioned album. But point taken. I'll leave it in for now, because I like the context, but I'll pull it if you or anyone else argues for it again.

Actually, there were a lot of surprising omissions from the 2009 top 400 in comparison to now- no Rolling Stones, no Eno, no Cardiacs, a lot of individual albums that didn't make it.

Here we go... maybe an unexpected start to the top 100?

100. Supertramp – Breakfast in America

            447 pts              5 votes (#37 - RoeDent) Unlisted (300+)

“On this album we are presented, finally, with the perfect marriage: gloriously vibrant pop songs with thoughtful lyrics and stunning arrangements. Here, for a brief moment, SUPERTRAMP became the memories of a generation.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=183928" rel="nofollow - russellk

99. Iron Maiden - Powerslave

            455 pts              4 votes (#24 – floflo79)              Unlisted (301+)

“… it took all which came to be on the previous albums and refined them into amazing creations… This is simply one of those beyond belief albums in music history much less metal that demands to be heard and more than holds up the test of time.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1128722" rel="nofollow -

98. Dream Theater – Images and Words

            457 pts              4 votes (#5 – DarkLizzard/RoeDent)        78

“Although Images is DT’s second album, it was the first time when you could really feel the emotion and true capabilities of this band… Images and Words to me is the quintessential Dream Theater album and the best one to get into them.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=11179" rel="nofollow -

97. Emerson, Lake and Palmer – Emerson, Lake and Palmer

            465 pts              7 votes (#14 – ten years after)               47

“That keyboards could be that expressive, and that dominant was totally revelatory to me… this eponymous debut album is one of the most important, foundational albums of all of progressive rock music.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=338022" rel="nofollow - (#185)

96. Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks

            469 pts              4 votes (#17 – Guldbamsen)                   Unlisted (304+)

“it's an affecting, unbearably poignant record, not because it's a glimpse into his soul, but because the songs are remarkably clear-eyed and sentimental, lovely and melancholy at once… Dylan made albums more influential than this, but he never made one better.” – http://www.allmusic.com/album/blood-on-the-tracks-mw0000189846" rel="nofollow -

95. Khan – Space Shanty

            470 pts              5 votes (#18 – BaldFriede)                     Unlisted (305+)

“For some reason this album haunts me, and I return to it again and again. Is it the excellent interplay of Hillage and Stewart? Is it the huge variety of meters on the album (about every meter up to 13/8 is present on it)? It is an eerie quality I can't quite grasp..” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=48329" rel="nofollow - BaldFriede  (#18)

94. Stevie Wonder – Innervisions

            473 pts              5 votes (#22 – Guldbamsen)                   Unlisted (306+)

“It is the album that best celebrates his musical maturity and completes the transition from Little Stevie Wonder to the grown-up artist with an active imagination and burning social conscience... It is the best long-form capturing of Wonder’s talent, and remains a work of constant, evolving surprise.” – http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/m9cg" rel="nofollow -

            479 pts              5 votes (#2 – Nogbad the Bad)               119

90. The Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed

            483 pts              4 votes (#22 – micky)                            Unlisted (310+)

“So in Let It Bleed we can find every role the Stones have ever played for us — swaggering studs, evil demons, harem keepers and fast life riders… [the final track] is one of the most outrageous productions ever staged by a rock and roll band, and every note of it works to perfection.” – http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/let-it-bleed-19691227" rel="nofollow -

89. Opeth – Blackwater Park

            491 pts              4 votes (#9 – sleeper)                            58

“I consider this all-encompassing, bleak atmosphere to be the strength of Blackwater Park because it is created so exquisitely and without ever become overwhelming and depressing the listener… it exceeds expectations and dishes out one of the best albums of the last 10 years.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=117603" rel="nofollow - sleeper  (#9)

88. Pink Floyd – Ummagumma

            496 pts              5 votes (#23 – tamijo)                            134

“This is the band at their most avant-garde and experimental… Floyd have a few slightly more consistent albums, and their best songs are found elsewhere. Nonetheless this is a unique musical statement.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=322054" rel="nofollow - (#72)

87. Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet

            500 pts              5 votes (#3 – RoeDent)                          38

“Wilson's undeniable gift for melody is intact and his charismatic voice is more versatile and mature than ever before… With "Fear of a Blank Planet" this talented band has once again given the world a work of art that is intricate, brilliantly stimulating and thought-provoking.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=121081" rel="nofollow -

86. Tangerine Dream – Phaedra

            504 pts              6 votes (#34 – Nogbad the Bad)              150

“You can't even sum up how sublime this album is in words… haunting and at the same time incredibly beautiful and exciting. This is another excellent album by TD and it not only defines their next approach to their sound in this era, I believe it redefines electronic music altogether.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=32462" rel="nofollow -

85. Can – Ege Bamyasi

            508 pts              6 votes (#22 – Lewian)                          75

“It's all here: the rhythmically busy, near paranormal jamming; the quieter, more hypnotic ballads; a couple of typically skewed pop songs; and another classic CAN freak-out… in retrospect it may well be the quintessential CAN recording” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=40321" rel="nofollow -

84. maudlin of the Well – Part the Second

            508.2 pts           6 votes (#23 – DarkLizzard)                   New release

“That music--NEW music, like this--can be conceptualized, played, and performed at such a high level of mastery, is, for me, so uplifting and hopeful… breathtaking in both beauty and virtuosity. One of the most important progressive rock albums of the 21st Century.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=230131" rel="nofollow - (#83)

83. Van der Graaf Generator – H to He, Who Am The Only One

            508.4 pts           6 votes (#17 – addictedtoprog)               56

“…hearing Hammill's searing depictions of inner pain, self-loathing and regret can be cathartic… H TO HE, WHO AM THE ONLY ONE further expanded the boundaries of progressive in the form of an oftimes dark, and sometimes disturbing masterpiece.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=7796" rel="nofollow -

82. Emerson, Lake and Palmer – Trilogy

            510 pts              6 votes (#4 – ten years after)                 18

81. Rush – Moving Pictures

            511 pts              5 votes (#10 – rushfan4)                        52

“This is probably Rush's most consistent album with no really weak moments that stand out. Lifeson's guitar tone and playing on this album is some of his best work… They never made an album better than this” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=391016" rel="nofollow - (#48)

            514 pts              7 votes (#25 – jonross14)                       46

“To me, all five of these pieces are among the pinnacle of jazz music, the epitome and distillation of the genre, and it is a record that anyone of any musical persuasions should hear at least once in his lifetime.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=272882" rel="nofollow -

            523 pts              6 votes (#13 – twseel)                           Unlisted (322+)

“For those that claim prog was dead by 1977 one merely has to hand such detractors a copy of this album and their mind shall be changed forever more… without question one of the major highlights of the Canterbury scene.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=205314" rel="nofollow -

77. The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds

            525 pts              5 votes (#4 – sublime220)                      Unlisted (323+)

76. David Bowie – Low

            525.9 pts           6 votes (#7 – Guldbamsen)                     115

“On side one you have a great collection of semi-punky art rock songs… On side two you have an excellent set of four semi-ambient mostly electronic pieces that almost flow together into one big post-classical tone poem. This is some of the best and most progressive music that has the named David Bowie attached to it… sheer genius.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=175635" rel="nofollow -

75. Radiohead – In Rainbows

            526 pts              4 votes (#7 – Polymorphia)                     7

“It's so unassuming and sparse that it belies the complexity of the arrangements… one of the most well-crafted albums not only of the year, but of the new millennium.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=154509" rel="nofollow -

74. The Doors – The Doors

            528 pts              6 votes (#8 – Guldbamsen)                     9

“Jim Morrison and the Doors were light years ahead of anyone at this point… As influential and far reaching for the heavier and darker end of the rock spectrum as the Beatles were to pop music.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=368007" rel="nofollow -

73. Genesis – Trespass

            536 pts              8 votes (#18 – addictedtoprog)               45

“Trespass was the perfect marriage of youthful naivety, sentimentalism, band chemistry, and great songs. Fantastic dramatic development and pastoral melodic grandeur are nearly non-stop throughout… the single finest Genesis album, at least if you are looking for heart.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=248192" rel="nofollow -

72. Mahavishnu Orchestra – Birds of Fire

            540 pts              5 votes (#12 – Formentera Lady)            30

“Explosive and white hot and each member pushing the borders and creating this overwhelming intense music saturated in a complicit beauty… The precision of the instrumental pieces is almost unbelievable in execution” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=35773" rel="nofollow -

71. Rush – Hemispheres

            544 pts              4 votes (#11 – rushfan4)                        26

“The music seems to arrive straight from the cosmos onto the playing fields of paradise, delivered by deities for our pleasure and sparkling with incredibly bright electrical power… Rush had finally found that ideal balance of hard-hitting power and disturbingly good musicianship” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=148241" rel="nofollow -

60. Pain of Salvation – Remedy Lane

            605 pts              5 votes (#3 – infernalfrog)                      3

“As you can imagine, the overriding feeling of this album is very bleak and sad… Once again Pain of Salvation prove that it's the blend of deep emotional connection from the lyrics augmented by powerful, complex and feeling driven music that makes this such a great album” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=112054" rel="nofollow -

59. John Coltrane – A Love Supreme

            608 pts              6 votes (#7 – Kazza3)                            124

“…his pinnacle studio outing, that at once compiled all of the innovations from his past, spoke to the current of deep spirituality that liberated him from addictions to drugs and alcohol, and glimpsed at the future innovations of his final two and a half years… his emotional, searching, sometimes prayerful journey is made abundantly clear.” – http://www.allmusic.com/album/a-love-supreme-mw0000187827" rel="nofollow -

58. Genesis – A Trick of the Tail

            613 pts              7 votes (#12 – emigre80)                       28

“The sound on this album is organic and very un-forced, stylistically flowing from one section to the next. Collins adopts a bit of Gabriel style in his vocal delivery, but to Phil's credit the emotional factor is a little closer to the surface here… highly recommended.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=371" rel="nofollow -

57. Talk Talk – Spirit of Eden

            645 pts              7 votes (#4 – Dayvenkirq)                      280

“Like the flawless strokes of a master painter's brush, Talk Talk creates here a vivid tapestry of soulful beauty and elegance. Ceaselessly artistic and emotional, Spirit of Eden is more poignant than nearly anything else I've heard, and its blend of sounds and mood transcends classification or simple description-- they are an experience which everyone interested in life, love, and music should take.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=280151" rel="nofollow -

56. The Who – Who’s Next

            670 pts              6 votes (#17 – justin4950834-2)  51

“'Who's Next' is a collection of great tracks from The Who that flow together smoothly, creating a great opus of 70's rock music… It really shows the band maturing their sound… this album has probably stood the test of time more than any other album by the band.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=475708" rel="nofollow -

55. The Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers

            702 pts              7 votes (#2 – ten years after)                 Unlisted (345+)

“It manages to have a loose, ramshackle ambience that belies both its origins and the dark undercurrents of the songs…. With its offhand mixture of decadence, roots music, and outright malevolence, Sticky Fingers set the tone for the rest of the decade for the Stones.” – http://www.allmusic.com/album/sticky-fingers-mw0000195498" rel="nofollow -

54. Kayo Dot – Choirs of the Eye

            704 pts              5 votes (#1 – sleeper)                            No movement!

“ an avant-garde album that blends metal with jazz, classical and the odd hint of post-rock, and incorporated that into a framework that's both composed but also feels part improvised, dissonant but making plentiful use of harmony… five unique compositions that have helped to build up an amazing album” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=172614" rel="nofollow - (#1)

53. Gong – You

            719 pts              7 votes (#5 – BaldFriede)                       18

“Theater has always been a big part of the best prog, and Allen makes Gong one of the most theatrically entertaining in the history of the genre… The massive challenge of getting these parts to meld into a cohesive whole is better achieved on [this album than the previous ones]… I don't think anything can prepare the Gong naïve listener to what is coming their way.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=271552" rel="nofollow -

52. Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells

            721 pts              9 votes (#14 – floflo79)                          7

“When it was released "Tubular Bells" was a real breath of fresh air, totally original, and bursting with energy… while music critics and Oldfield himself will now point to many flaws in the product, to the casual listener these are either transparent, or now form an integral part of the piece. In all, a remarkable effort, which is rightly acclaimed as a landmark album.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=27277" rel="nofollow -

51. Caravan – In the Land of Grey and Pink

            725 pts              8 votes (#26 – Magnum Vaeltaja)            28

“A lovely, carefree release at a time when the majority of rock bands were trying to either impress or depress. And the songs... let's just say these guys could write… Comforting and friendly but always musical, this is a special record, to be cherished, protected and passed down.” - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3108" rel="nofollow - Atavachron

50. Magma – Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh

            731 pts              7 votes (#2 BrufordFreak)                      24

“I LOVE the reckless abandon, the feel of near insanity of this music. And yet it is controlled, it's constructed, it's orchestrated, it flows, and it helps to tell a cool story… nothing can truly compare to MDK. A true musical, psycho-spiritual masterpiece.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=219259" rel="nofollow - (#2)

49. Camel – Mirage

            733 pts              10 votes (#7 Magnum Vaeltaja)              16

“Imagine a symphonic group with a stellar keyboardist, a rock- solid rhythm section and a profoundly soulful guitarist who doubles as a virtuoso flautist. Now imagine that these four are masters of not only creating vivid, mellow instrumental sonic palettes but can also write fantasy poetry comparable to that of David Byron. And on top of that, they can even turn on a dime and rock… you'll fall in love right away.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1456581" rel="nofollow - (#7)

48. Il Balletto di Bronzo – Ys

            733.6 pts           7 votes (#7 micky/andreol263)               111

“I have recommended this album to many people who like me were unaware of the serious quality of Italian progressive rock, and have left many people muttering... oh my god. If you [like albums that are heavily keyboard oriented], and like being musically bludgeoned for 40 minutes, you will love this album almost as much as I do… a complete masterpiece of progressive rock.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=74513" rel="nofollow - (#7)

47. Robert Wyatt – Rock Bottom

            736 pts              6 votes (#20 – twseel)                           161

“Wyatt contemplates his own personal drama and learns to re-value life under new terms… This album is simply stunning, beautiful: the way that it portrays an air of dreamy melancholy in each and every pore of its textures, melodies and vocal lines, is cathartic without getting depressive, compelling without getting too overwhelming. There is a sense of constant liberation that develops in a recurrent basis as the repertoire goes on right until the ultimate relief, when the final notes of the last song vanishes into the void.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=29840" rel="nofollow -

46. David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

            744 pts              7 votes (#4 – justin4950834-2)               188

“For a brief, spellbinding time the album takes us into a world where everything is about the present, the thought where we'll be five years from now seems impossible to contemplate, and glory is just a guitar chord away…  a bittersweet celebration of the redemptive power of rock and roll and the destructive power of fame” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=496653" rel="nofollow -

45. Gentle Giant – In a Glass House

            755 pts              7 votes (#13 tamijo)                              31

“IN A GLASS HOUSE, then, is the masterful issue of that happy marriage of utter freedom and creativity with outstanding musicianship… the fully-realized product of a band at the height of their creative and musical powers.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=285840" rel="nofollow -

44. Pain of Salvation – The Perfect Element, Part 1

            756 pts              5 votes (#2 – sleeper)                            5

“The Perfect Element is one of those strange albums that proves to be the easiest starting point for the band in question whilst holding such huge reserves of emotional and musical depth that it remains as a fast favourite… Pain of Salvation have created the perfect album.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=109397" rel="nofollow - (#2)

43. Steven Wilson – The Raven That Refused To Sing

            768 pts              6 votes (#1 – RoeDent)                          New release

“"Raven..." transposes Wilson's genius for composition into a realm that he has never dedicated himself so fervently towards… it  is widely defined by this sense of 'tribute' to other artists… and though the homages are often noticeable, no one influence ever takes over completely… intelligent, classic and as musically proficient as a listener could hope for.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=939041" rel="nofollow -

42. Amon Düül II – Yeti

            775 pts              9 votes (#5 – Guldbamsen)                     Unlisted (358+)

“It's satori, a musical meeting, where everything seems preconceived even if it's happening on a dime.....short moments of musical bliss that defy descriptions such as elaborate improvs and successful jamming… It pumps out of the speakers like a deranged explosive expressionism - transforming back and forth through wild psychedelic sections and alluring sprinkling acoustic bits… Yeti is truly in a class of its own.” – http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=4691" rel="nofollow - (#5)

41. Supertramp – Crime of the Century

            798 pts              9 votes (#9 – Formentera Lady)              3

“…the crime was that they were to become more famous, richer and more popular, but never to be as innovative, never to touch upon the musical alchemy of the philosopher's stone that would blend the perfect proportions of progressive rock and popular music again. It is not even greater than the sum of the parts - it is the total sum of the parts - communicating and harmonising, counterpoint and balance… the essential masterpiece of crossover prog.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=141760" rel="nofollow - (#61)

40. Jethro Tull – Aqualung

            817 pts              7 votes                                                  8

                                    (#6 - infernalfrog)

“Dirty urban imagery and ancient pastoral glimpses, blues-rock grit and folk whimsy, bitter social critique and tender domestic odes; so many contradictions and yet such a complete and seamless, almost effortless musical execution… Between the ragged immediacy of the preceding releases and the more polished and deliberate recordings that followed, "Aqualung" is the perfect balance.” – http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=2018" rel="nofollow -

39. Tangerine Dream – Rubycon

            851 pts              7 votes                                                  186

                                    (#15 – Kazza3)

“Do yourself a favour and listen to this at night, whilst doing nothing else other than listening, because only then can you fully begin to appreciate how perfect this record is. Whilst the ingredients are more or less the same as on Phaedra, here they’re used much more as sophisticated, subtle elements of composition. Every single moment and flourish, every time an instrument enters or a dial turns, feels like the most satisfyingly placed change imaginable.” – Kazza3 (#15)

38. Can – Tago Mago

            854 pts              8 votes                                                  27

                                    (#3 - Guldbamsen)

“[Can were] without exaggeration, one of the major creative forces of the 20th Century: a band so far beyond the usual genre pigeonholes of rock, jazz and/or classical as to defy any easy analysis or interpretation… Every CAN album in their pre-Virgin Record catalogue is arguably a masterpiece, but none deliver the impact of this monumental release.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=23229" rel="nofollow -

37. King Crimson – Starless and Bible Black

            880 pts              9 votes                                                  67

                                    (#6 – Dayvenkirq/Formentera Lady)

“This recording is just as mind-blowing, jaw-slacking and ear-bleeding [as Larks and Red]… The sheer contrasts of softness and power that is the KC signature after all is suitably demonstrated in spades; the quality of the performance and the material presented is simply extraordinary…. as modern sounding in 2012 as when it appeared on the scene” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=610015" rel="nofollow -

36. The Beatles – Revolver

            884 pts              10 votes                                                12

                                    (#10 – justin4950834-2)

“The Beatles, now satisfied with being one of the most popular groups of all time, decided to try and become more experimental and different with their music… What we find on this record are a collection of very mature, well thought out songs. In my opinion, Revolver is The Beatles' most consistently good album.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=411362" rel="nofollow -

35. Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy

            966 pts              10 votes                                                62

                                    (#21 Polymorphia)

“I can understand some having a problem with the stylistic variety on this album. To me, however, that is one of the album's strengths. Houses Of The Holy has a lot in common with In Through The Outdoor in that both are not very hard rock-oriented, rather they explore different genres and sounds… In many ways this was the last great Zep album, proof that even big name rock bands wanted to experiment in the early 1970s… A great classic rock album” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=395030" rel="nofollow - (#28)

34. Van der Graaf Generator – Still Life

            966.5 pts           8 votes                                                  6

                                    (#6 sleeper/Kazza3, #7 addictedtoprog)

“This is one of those slow growing masterpieces. None of the tracks here really grab the attention immediately, but over repeated listens, they reveal depth and detail that truly astounds. Of all of Van Der Graaf's releases, this one is the one that I find I connect the most with emotionally. Every once in a while, I have to listen to the title track, and it can almost bring me to tears - very few songs I can say that about - and it is not even the best track on the album…” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=295565" rel="nofollow -

33. Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother

            970 pts              7 votes                                                  186

                                    (#2 Guldbamsen)

“With AHM, Floyd emerges from the spacey jams it was known for, and they jump on the prog train ambitiously (maybe a tad too much for their yet self-confidence), taking chances and mostly succeeding. While the album might seem that it hasn't aged as well as its successor, it is probably due to that then-refreshing naïveté that pervades through the album… certainly no less essential than the following masterpieces they will astonish the world with.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=8329" rel="nofollow -

32. Pink Floyd – The Wall

            1000 pts            8 votes                                                  58

                                    (#3 floflo79, #7 Cambus741, #9 justin4950834-2)

“Put simply, this is not just one of Prog's greatest moments, but one of the greatest works of Rock music in general. It's hard to deny the significant power this album has. From memorable, powerful songs, to pitch-perfect recording quality, to a all-together cohesion that is yet unmatched anywhere else, this is Pink Floyd's crowning acheivement, and that is saying a lot… everything a rock opera could hope for” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=202427" rel="nofollow -

31. Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II

            1010 pts            11 votes                                                22

                                    (#5 tamijo)

“Led Zeppelin ll showed a new mastery of studio sound and impact, a coming together of the bold spirit of the 60s with the discipline of working musicians led by a seasoned veteran who knew exactly what he wanted and how to achieve it. It also may be the single most influential album in rock history… Seminal, explosive, no wasted time or energy, this masterwork remains a rock 'n roll cornerstone... a perfect statement unimprovable by God or man.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=126509" rel="nofollow -

30. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

            1030 pts            9 votes                                                  20

                                    (#2 Polymorphia, #5 sublime220)

“When this record hit the racks and airwaves in 1967 it changed the alignment of the planets... It is seamless and flows with sublime near- perfection from one song to the next. Just reading down the roster of songs leaves me shaking my head even now. It's got everything a great recording requires. And there may never be another song composed like "A day in the Life" ever again… This is the apex of the most influential band of all time.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=83755" rel="nofollow -

29. Can – Future Days

            1042 pts            8 votes                                                  112

                                    (#7 zravkapt, #8 BaldFriede)

“This is maybe their most complete and organic work: a model of musical grace, subtlety, and near-telepathic rapport. It's certainly the easiest on the ears of all their early, more challenging efforts, but like any true Krautrock classic the album was always worlds away from anything resembling prototypical Prog Rock… a more optimistic side of the otherwise subversive Krautrock experience.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=40322" rel="nofollow - Neu!mann

28. Gentle Giant – Octopus

            1070 pts            10 votes                                                16

                                    (#8 tamijo/floflo79)

“A wild, complex ride, Octopus is a succinct album, packing in as much punch as it can in its short 34 minute duration. The album is a great starting point for those new to Gentle Giant as it marks a turning point between the band's two stylistic eras… its songs are consistent in their inconsistency and controlled in their chaos… an excellent gem” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1520531" rel="nofollow - (#31)

27. Radiohead – OK Computer

            1089 pts            8 votes                                                  14

                                    (#3 Polymorphia, #6 zravkapt)

“The attention to detail is quite stunning, and is easily missed by a casual listen. Even the individual sounds made by each instrument have been carefully considered and honed so that the sound is pretty close to perfect. Melodically, harmonically, texturally, rhythimcally and formally it is one of the strongest and most consistent albums of all time.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=33814" rel="nofollow -

26. Radiohead – Kid A

            1106 pts            9 votes                                                  30

                                    (#1 Polymorphia, #6 sublime220, #7 Nogbad the Bad)

“This album takes the height of experimental rock music, multilayered sounds, bittersweet vocals, haunting melodies and depressing lyrics, and fused it with some mild electronica to create their weirdest and most experimental album yet… This is a stunning piece of music, incredibly original and accessible once you have got past the difficult change in style… Radiohead prove that they can follow a masterpiece with another masterpiece and are definitely one of the greatest bands in existence.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=33933" rel="nofollow -

25. Pink Floyd - Meddle

            1156 pts            9 votes                                                  11

                                    (#1 Dean)

“like [Atom Heart Mother], Meddle is an eclectic mix of space-rock, folk, and epic symphonic soundscapes. However, this album is more mature, sophisticated, and well-rounded than its excellent predecessor. At this point, Pink Floyd had completely shed the often uninteresting noddling that marked their early career and established themselves as a staggering musical force… I feel like I'm in some sort of oceanic bliss whenever I listen to it.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=443708" rel="nofollow -

24. Yes – Tales From Topographic Oceans

            1180 pts            8 votes (#1 emigre80)                            57

                                    (#1 emigre80, #9 micky/Kazza3)

“Never before in the context of rock has anything to this scale been done.. much less by a group on top of the music world… This album may have been more concise but at what cost.. the shear majesty and scope of the music that's what… and what we love progressive rock for is ambition, reaching for the stars, and exploding the popular notions of what rock is and should be. In that this album accomplishes in spades.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=83286" rel="nofollow - (#9)

23. The Beatles – The Beatles (The White Album)

            1195 pts            10 votes                                                38

                                    (#7 floflo79, #8 jonross14, #10 Formentera Lady)

“The consistency and versatility featured on The White Album is truly remarkable considering its 90+ minute run… a collection of 30 compositions recorded at the peak of the band's creativity which doesn't necessarily mean that the individual moments here surpass any of their other classics. What this album offers its listeners is a continuous stream of quality material without once showing a sign of weakness… By far the longest and most ambitious project the Beatles would ever undertake.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=292047" rel="nofollow -

22. King Crimson - Lizard

            1247 pts            10 votes                                                16

(#2 tamijo, #3 Formentera Lady, #8 Magnum Vaeltaja, #9 BaldFriede)

“"Lizard" ventures into largely unknown territory… some of the band's most beautiful, lyrical woodwind arrangements can be found counteracted by some of the funkiest, most refined heavy jazz soundscapes to be found in prog … Many other reviewers warn of this album being one of the more difficult King Crimson albums to get into though I couldn't find that to be less true… it delivers some of the most beautiful, most creative and most varied output in the band's catalog.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1434426" rel="nofollow - (#8)

21. The Mars Volta – De-Loused in the Comatorium

            1248 pts            9 votes                                                  15

                                    (#2 addictedtoprog, #8 Kazza3)

“Two guys became famous in a post-hardcore band, got bored, and released all of their pent-up frustration and creativity in a crazed, genre-mashing explosion of sound and light- and then managed to pack that explosion into tight, polished, hook-filled songs that are bursting at the seams. Listen to it, preferably right now.” – Kazza3 (#8)

Not really. This is the business end of the contest- all albums need a bunch of reasonably high votes to get anywhere now. It'd be nice if it'd done better, but moving up 30 places and overtaking OK Computer ain't bad.

20. Van der Graaf Generator – Godbluff

            1298 pts            12 votes                                                 5

                                    (#10 addictedtoprog)

“Instead of taking off from the exuberant psychedelic forest created by 'Pawn Hearts', the foursome decided to get rid of the paraphernalia… in order to approach the new complex compositions and arrangements in a tighter manner. Even Hammill's singing feels more focused on portraying the contemplative nature of his lyrics… the band was playing at its most cohesive and had reached a perfect level of sonic violence to match the passionate lyrical imagery” –  http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=1419" rel="nofollow - Cesar Inca

19. Genesis – Nursery Cryme

            1321 pts            12 votes                                                 9

                                    (#8 addictedtoprog)

“This is the album where they begin to find their voice and despite poor production produce many moments of brilliance. Genesis are now able to shed their somewhat meek, muted approach and confidently forge their own sound because Collins and Hackett have the wherewithal to execute it… Even as the band explores diverse styles, the overall sound is unified and cohesive and conveys the feeling of listening to an album rather than a collection of tracks… a rocksolid effort that marks the beginning of a wonderful streak of great prog albums “ -  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=967795" rel="nofollow - rogerthat

18. Van der Graaf Generator – Pawn Hearts

            1332 pts            13 votes                                                 5

                                    (#1 addictedtoprog/infernalfrog)

“ the album represents truly avant garde, demanding, and occasionally difficult, yet highly gratifying listening. PAWN HEARTS displays a maturity and ease of execution which seems to reach its rarefied heights of artistry without trying as overtly hard to be "clever" as H TO HE did, and thereby succeeds all the more resoundingly. Yet, while there is ample power and beauty to be found here, we are made to pay for our pleasure with occasional "pain" in the form of some decidedly jarring passages… the product of a trail-blazing progressive rock band in top form.” -  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=7846" rel="nofollow - Peter

17. King Crimson - Discipline

            1406 pts            14 votes                                                 20

                                    (#2 Lewian, #5 addictedtoprog, #10 tamijo)

“…’controlled chaos’, disciplined, demanding, highly intricate playing by multi-instrumentalists in polyrhythmic forms. Four geniuses, each leaders, innovators and virtuosi at their respective instruments, collaborating (right, Robert?) to create music that this avid music listener had never heard (in that way) before. Forget the stale experimental splurge that came out of King Crimson's earlier incarnation in the 60s and early 70s, this is the music for which KC should be remembered as their ‘peak’.” –  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=330922" rel="nofollow - BrufordFreak  (#94)

16. Yes – The Yes Album

            1464 pts            12 votes                                                 3

                                    (#7 emigre80)

“By this point Yes had completely abandoned the jazz and psychedelic influence of their debut and were now into progressive territory. The album is unique, though, in that it retains a mix of rock, blues and folk they wouldn't touch on again later in their career. The result is a special transitional sort of album that captures Yes in a special incubation period and it sounds quite fantastic… Honestly, as much as I love Yes's other albums, I would be completely happy if this Yes line-up had released a couple more albums like this one and then just called it quits.” –  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1477039" rel="nofollow - Magnum Vaeltaja  (#15)

“In my years as an audiophile, I have been in constant search for 'the perfect album'… The Lamb, IMHO, has not one but two "perfect" sides (Sides 3 & 4). Nothing else comes close in terms of seamless quality, story, engaging mood, musicianship, experimentalism, and sheer consistency. Lyrically, Gabe achieves some of the most poetic phrasings and vocal deliveries ever on record... Every time I leave this album, with this song, I am energized, ready to jetté through my day… for me, the single greatest prog album of all-time.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=174308" rel="nofollow - (#1)

The album contains an incredible tracklist; each of the six tracks being true wonders of classic progressive composition… The band has wonderful experience in classical composition, with masterful proficiency in counterpoint, harmony, and melody, as well as fantastic experience in the dynamics of a rock song, and a superb ability to mix the two. And Supper's Ready.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=465053" rel="nofollow -

12. Yes - Relayer

            1812 pts            15 votes                                                3

                                    (#2 emigre80, #4 addictedtoprog, #8 Dean)

“Like a classic painting placed underneath blacklight, Yes took their masterpiece formula and put a frightening, alien and penetrating spin on it… It's undeniably more uneven and rough than [Close to the Edge], but that's part of what makes it so damned good; this is Yes at their most uncompromisingly creative… Yes' sound is usually padded with symphonic warmth, but here, the instrumentation is cutting and sharp… but it’s that experimental choppy nature that keeps me engaged… it continues to challenge and provoke me as a listener.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=245558" rel="nofollow -

11. King Crimson - Red

            1848 pts            16 votes                                                1

                                    (#1 Formentera Lady)

“Stripped of the overindulgence of earlier albums Red is a raw and bruising album… it seeks out a darker and more undertone identity moved through swathes of distortion and hypnotic repetitive riffing. Red is King Crimson stripped down to three piece and playing with dark brooding music with splashes of wood wind that actually drive that menacing feeling where the opposite might would have been assumed.,, It's a well-crafted piece of music, heavy complex, stinging and sympathetic.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=15226" rel="nofollow -

Nice work, I just wish I contributed so there might have been more metal in the list. Cry

It's just it was simply too hard for me to list my favorite albums in any sort of order.

It would have been great to see Conor get himself involved, at the very least I know I wouldn't have been the only one voting for Fen then.

As for the top spot, I could see Animals taking it, I remember seeing it appear high up on a lot of lists.

I think it will be CTTE but it's possible that WYWH will be the top.

Oddly, CTTE was my lowest rated of Yes' "big 6" run of albums. I think I just wore it out in the 1970s and now would rather listen to the others.  Not that it's not a brilliant album, because it sure as hell is.

Conor has a great top 50 of 2015 list on progsphere
(I might also love it because I'm on it)

I'd love this. Usually, when Pink Floyd albums are ranked, I see Animals trailing behind DSOM and WYWH but from the first days of my prog interest and knowing these three, without a shadow of a doubt Animals was best for me by some distance. I know I'm not alone with this so I hope it will shine this time, for once.

Kicking off the top 10...

10. The Beatles – Abbey Road

            1861 pts            14 votes                                                11

                                    (#4 floflo79, #7 RoeDent, #9 zravkapt)

“Despite the growth apart they were experiencing and bizarre legends that haunt this release, it shows a band at the height of their powers, modern but firmly rooted in the rock experience that came before them… the whole feeling of the album is, ironically, charged with positivism and gleaming with electrical energy.  It is a flawless testament to four young guys with good souls and a gift for rock 'n roll the world is unlikely to see again, and it was an inestimable evolutionary moment for rock.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=158782" rel="nofollow -

“I think Revolver has better songs but Abbey Road is far more consistent… The so-called Long Medley is fantastic and a precursor to the beloved epics of prog… "Come Together" has some of Lennon's best lyrics, Abbey Road also has some of [Ringo’s] best drumming,  "Here Comes The Sun" is the best song George did while a Beatle… If this was a plain vanilla rock site, this would get 5 stars from me.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=306281" rel="nofollow - (#9)

9. Yes - Fragile

            1882 pts            15 votes                                                1

                                    (#5 justin4950834-2, #6 emigre80)

“It's difficult to explain what makes "Fragile" so effective; suffice to say that where "The Yes Album" told tales of faraway places, "Fragile" takes you there. It is an oddly effective balancing act between powerful epics and solo showcases… the pummelling introduction to "Heart of the Sunrise", walks between the sublime and the scalding in ways that make "Perpetual Change" look clumsy by comparison… "Fragile" conjures sonic maelstroms, employs artfully conceived arrangements that defy deconstruction, rests on the aeries of Olympus, and plants the flag of progressive rock at its highest point to date.” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=12744" rel="nofollow -

“I devised an analogy that compares the first 3 classic Yes albums to the movie Rocky; "Fragile" is the intermediary training montage... "Mood For A Day" is Steve Howe sparring with the flank of beef, "The Fish" is Chris Squire's one-armed push-ups in the gym, "We Have Heaven" is Jon Anderson jogging through the industrial yards. And of course, "Roundabout" and "Heart of The Sunrise" are the triumphant scene where Rick Wakeman runs up the steps with the sun rising over Philadelphia and the city's streets following after him; cathartic, spiritual and iconic works of prog… the pieces were falling in place for the glory of “Close to the Edge” to materialise” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1433438" rel="nofollow -  (#23)

8. Jethro Tull – Thick as a Brick

            1979 pts            16 votes                                                5

                                    (#2 infernalfrog, #3 sublime220, #8 justin4950834-2, #9 twseel)

“The various themes and melodies, arranged as a single, album-long suite, are brilliant, and insinuate their way into the pleasure-center of your brain, n'er to depart… the inclusion here of so much Hammond organ really fleshes out the sound, and gives this effort a classic Prog feel. Season that with generous dollops of workmanlike fiddle from the multi-talented Mr. Anderson, and you've got a delectable auditory stew -- a feast for the ears of epic proportions. That's not all: I also think the lyrics are brilliant -- some of the best Anderson has ever penned… a must!” - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=16339" rel="nofollow -

“It brings all important factors from previous prog albums in an extreme form. The unique thing is that it is balanced. It doesn't just throw around ideas, the different parts connect very naturally, something is extremely difficult with its progressive structures. That's the reason that even a sophisticated pop fan could like this as an album… If anyone wants to know the definition of progressive rock, this is the first thing to listen.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=875971" rel="nofollow - (#9)

7. King Crimson – In the Court of the Crimson King

            2096 pts            17 votes                                                2

                                    (#1 Magnum Vaeltaja, #3 justin4950834-2, #8 infernalfrog, #9 ten years after)

“God listened "In the Court of the Crimson King" and saw that it was good. God divided Progressive Rock from the rest of the music… The great achievement of KING CRIMSON is that in their debut release they managed to create an album that has 5 absolutely different songs that show 5 different aspects of prog rock: aggression, calm, darkness, fusion and the closer that blends all this aspects and more in an 9:22 minutes track.” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=14708" rel="nofollow -

“A masterpiece of every sense of the term. Innovative, iconic, emotive, virtuosic, memorable, there isn't much that King Crimson's debut can't lay claim to. Side one of the album is the emotional side, featuring three songs that each distinctly correspond to emotions, each different yet unified under the underlying theme of desperation… Side two is the more intellectual side of the album, more cryptic lyrically and leaving more to the listener's interpretation to get their meaning across… Five stars for five stunning opuses that all contribute their own unique tones and mood while still weaving together a unified tapestry of music that never tires after all these years” – http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1433436" rel="nofollow - (#1)
