Opening of Silent Wings is as great as their greatest stuff--coming at the end of an OK album. The song sorta falls apart for me in the middle---but I always thought Squire, White, and Howe kicked ass in the opening and was hoping when they were all still alive for them to do something like this again---would have been nice for them to play that opening for the opening of a show or something.

its been awhile since I've heard it, you made me want to put it on. Yes the opening is brilliant, and taken further still when Anderson and those killer harmony vocals kicked in. I don't remember it falling apart per se. I do remember that the rest of the band, and Anderson's great vocal performance were enough to cover for that... thing.. was it a Casio from Radio Shack that Wakeman was playing on his solo. That whole album should be #1 on the keyboardists list of sounds you DON'T want to replicate on your album. Urrgg...

Exactly^^^^Ricks sounds are bad all over the album and this song is no exception

yeah.. but unlike the rest of the album, this song was damn near as good as anything they did previously or afterward. Everything about it rules, more well enough to cover the unfortunate choice of keyboard sounds.
That said, it still does SORT of grow on you. No qualms at all with choosing that as favorite of the group. Strong a group of choices as it is. Quite well could be considered not only Squire's finest moment, but I'd be hard pressed to find anything better that Jon did. His voice just soared and obviously was very attuned to the overall vibe and the music. I thought the song itself held together quite well, furious intro, sort of a step back, then the Casio solo, then the band reenters and lays waste. As close to perfect as one could hope to get, and would have been with a different sound from Wakeman.

To be honest, I never got into HOTS, nor Fragile. It's merely a 4, maybe even a 3 1/2 star album.

i'm leaning toward On the Silent Wings of Freedom, as I haven't heard it anywhere near as much as the rest, but i'd probably have to go with Yours is No Disgrace of those listed.
Have they played Wings on any live albums? I can't recall seeing it listed.

I was listening to a live version of Yours Is No Disgrace yesterday and was enjoying the completely mad guitars solos. They really are totally nuts and yet so perfect.

Well Wakeman had invested in the Birotron. Some of the other guys were promoting their gadgets on Tormato--they were all the best and inventors wanted them to use their new technology. If you look up Birotron in Wkipedia it is facinating to see the history of this very rare instrument

Hi,
Not voting ... I think the epics are what defines this band, not necessarily the hit songs, but in reality, both come together, not separate.
Pass on choice ... too many of them!
