I'm a fan of many forms of prog, but have hit a wall in discovering more modern bands. If anyone could let me know some of their great discoveries, it could be extremely helpful.

For a reference some modern bands I'm a fan of are:
Caligulas Horse, Aracne, Karnivool, Fair to Midland, Being, Vola, Agent Fresco, Mercury Tree, Sumer, Whalerider, some Porcupine Tree, and Rishloo.

Amazing how similar our tastes in music are right now.  I'm on that same tangent.  Caligula's Horse, Vola, Karnivool, and Agent Fresco are all finding regular play for me.

The only things I can think of to suggest along those lines would be Leprous, Circles, Eden Circus, and Skyharbor.  The singers for Leprous and Agent Fresco sound similar.  Circles, like Caligula's Horse and Karnivool, are also Australian.  Though Circles is much heavier than those two bands, they aren't totally far off.  Eden Circus mixes a lot of good atmospheric stuff in with some solid "riff rock".  Skyharbor's new single is just amazing, but I really enjoyed Guiding Lights.

I Am Giant is another band I've been listening to lately.  They're a New Zealand band, whose last album was produced by the guy who has worked on albums for Karnivool, Skyharbor, and Animals as Leaders.  I don't consider them a prog band, but I'm excited for their new album, because they have added the singer and guitar player from Exit Ten (a solid British alt-metal band) into the fold.  This is their single with the new members:

Might be a bit far off the path for you, but I enjoyed it.

Outside of A Perfect Circle and Oceansize, not much of value in that link.  The last post was from 2010.

I hope you've heard of Arcane. Same singer of Caligula but the band has a more prog style to their metal.

Or something a little less metal in more in the vein of Karnivool..

There is a lot of bands in their style, I just don't know any by name.

great! Karnivool, Rishloo, Caligula's Horse, Fair to Midland and Arcane are also favourite bands of mine!

I definately suggest Leprous, too - they are simply stunning and very unique!

(best band around these days!!! :D )

Soen might fit your taste

(the album needed some time to sink in.. but now I love them!)

Im pretty sure you already know them but in case you don't...
Tesseract:

Port Noir is also pretty amazing in my ears!

Katatonia, although not strictly prog is very decent, too :)

hope you find some inspiration and new music for you! and i will definately check out vola and agent fresco!

Wow, nice call on Port Noir!  I'll be screening that further this week.  I can't get enough of stuff like that and Agent Fresco right now.

I'm digesting Dream the Electric Sleep, as well.  That melody on Utopic is really addicting.

Katatonia and Tesseract are also solid suggestions.

You cannot go wrong with Vola.  I've had the Vola record for a few months now, and I can tell you, it doesn't get old.

Please keep the recommendations coming!  I'm not concerned with whether it's considered prog or not.  I'll listen to whatever.

Holy hell backtothegarden!! How the hell has Exit Ten been off my radar for so long?! Those guys are freakin beastly. I'll also keep an eye out for I Am Giant's new CD. I'm really diggin the Leprous. They're one of those bands that I've heard of and seen around but never really gave a chance, but since you said they sounded like Agent Fresco I finally did, and am glad for it.

Port Noir will definitely get regular ear love time and Dream the Electric Sleep sounds like a solid find.

Thanks everyone! Got some new great bands to binge listen to.

Great calls here! I would also suggest the obvious, HAKEN! And almost every band that played at the Euroblast 11 a couple of says ago. The amount of talent at this small festival was just outstanding....

Have you seen the music video for Port Noir's "Neon"?  Such ridiculousness!! Creepy 70's disco dancer on the dance floor alone? f*** yes they'll make a video about it!

glad you like some of the suggestions! nice to see how productive such a little brainstorm of a few people can be :)

Point Noir is also very good, very interesting.....at the moment I am playing Agent Fresco, a new find for me, very Leprous-like, but there is a lack of a "metal" edge that Leprous has. Album of the week for me is Bloom from Caligula's Horse - what a wonderful album....

Posted By: tbonson04
Date Posted: October 20 2015 at 16:26
Most definitely about Bloom being a wonderful album. It hasn't been released here in America, but soon I'll get my vinyl copy and all will be well. I was skeptical about the change in mood of their style, from gloomy to uplifting, but they somehow pulled it off extremely well.

I have to admit that I prefer Bloom to the Rivers End album but i don't know why. Perhaps Bloom is deeeper somehow, musically richer. It is still growing for me, especially "Daughter of the Mountain" an the incredibly catchy "hit" Turntail.....

I'm sure once I'm able to listen to the album in its entirety, it will be right up there with River's End for me.

I'm listening to the new Caligula's Horse record now.  I love the range these guys have - such chunky, kick drum heavy riffs, then seamlessly transitioning to lighter acoustic material.  Good stuff.

It's been a good week for discovering music - Port Noir from this thread, Zentraedi and Transience from another thread on this site.

I decided to give the new Nad Sylvan album a shot on Monday, and man, it is good.  It's like what Genesis could've sounded like if the 80s didn't happen.  Now I'm going to have to check out some of his other work.

tbonson04 - Exit Ten's first album "Remember the Day" is pretty awesome.  Some crazy heavy riffs on there, contrasted by those clean vocals.  It's a little raw, but so many good ideas on that album.  "Technically Alive" is my favorite track from that record.  I love gallop/thrash tempo stuff.

I just got my copy a few hours ago and listened through a few times now. You can really hear how much they've matured as band in between just one album. Their playing is tighter and the sound overall is just more varied. It will take a little while to really digest the whole album, but so far its surpassed my expectations.

People often talk about a specifically Australian style of alt-metal/heavy prog, the mainstays of which are said to be Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, The Butterfly Effect and Cog. I haven't heard much of them aside from Karnivool, but it's probably worth your time.

Posted By: tbonson04

Most definitely. I love Karnivool, Cog, and Dead Letter Circus. Not a big fan of The Butterfly Effect though.

Wow guys thank you for bringing up Agent Fresco! the new album Destrier has blown me away!
it took a while but hell yeah! their songwriting is a lot more epic then their sound is "cheesy" so it totally makes up for the overall very sweet and poppy sound. man! really fine recommendation, thanks :)

Agent Fresco and Port Noir were definitely some of the best recommendations I pulled from this thread.  Those two have accompanied Tesseract, Earthside, and Ne Obliviscaris in my playlists this week.

I've been digging through google play music and amazon, cross referencing bands like Karnivool and Caligula's Horse.  I've found a few things that I've put on the future screen list, but nothing I'm at the point of recommending yet.

.At least for me, the past two months have been great for music so far.  It started with that new Riverside record, and just kept getting better.

If you find anything interesting on your amazon and google play search dont be afraid to let us all know.

Okay, then.

Note that I am not recommending these bands, but that they were found as cross-references in my Google Play search for Karnivool.  I'll leave some notes on what I found about each:

Floating Me - featuring members of Karnivool and Cog.  I listened to a hot minute of it, and it sounded a lot like Karnivool.  Not sure about the singer, though.

Melodyssey - groove oriented hard rock, maybe a bit of nu-metal influence (LD50-era Mudvayne, maybe?)

The Butterfly Effect - sounded a lot like Dead Letter Circus to me, who I'm not huge on.

Sydonia - more hard rock, like Seether.

Breaking Orbit - I think I saw someone on this site recommend this band before.  These guys have that style that seems to embody the "aussie prog" sound coined by bands like Karnivool.

Jericco - didn't listen to much of it, but what I heard was good.  Driving, mid-tempo hard rock.

Vestascension - This was an unusual find, considering that all the other bands it was recommending were from Australia, and this band is from Baltimore.  Baltimore is about a 30 minute drive for me, so these guys really flew under the radar.  Moody, atmospheric prog rock.  Their album is free on bandcamp.

Setting Fire to Stacey - New Zealand band, similar to I Am Giant, 10 years, or Evans Blue (with the old singer).

City Of Souls - Same as setting fire to Stacey.  New Zealand band, influenced by 10 Years.  Brooding hard rock.

So it seems that Google sees Karnivool as more of a rock band than a progressive band.  The last two were recommendations from I Am Giant's twitter feed, so I knew what I was getting into with them.

What I usually do is make a list like this, and queue them up in Spotify while I'm at work.  If something grabs my attention, I'll look into it further.  Hopefully, someone will be able to pull something from this list.  As of now, I'm not even sure that I'm going to be able to.  Time will tell, I guess.

Here are a couple more for you if you like the Aussie prog sound:
Sleep Parade (Melbourne)

Closure in Moscow (Melbourne)

Although already mentioned in this thread, here is a track from the now defunct Melodyseey (Brisbane)

Perhaps the best Aussie prog album in recent times, I really recommend listening to the latest album from Arcane (Brisbane). Watch these guys in the future.

Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Of all the Aussie bands I found when digging through Google Play, Melodyssey is the best of the lot so far.  Distance and Regret has some great grooves on it.  I just recently discovered The Two Windows, their last one before they split.  Apparently, the drummer left to join Dead Letter Circus.

I believe The Two Windows was produced by Forrester Savell, and everything that guy touches seems to turn to gold.  Dude's a genius, and he works with some of the best artists coming from that part of the world.  I discovered a lot of good stuff by browsing the list of albums he's worked on.

Floating Me was an absolute disappointment.  The vocals killed it for me.  Admittedly, the expectations were a bit high, considering it featured members of Cog and Karnivool.  Oh, well.

Still waiting for full-length releases from Setting Fire to Stacey and City Of Souls, but the singles are good.

Thanks for all the recs, deandob!

I'm with you on Floating Me. I was excited when I heard it consisted of Cog and Karnivool members, but then I heard the vocals. I don't know exactly what the singer changed from Cog to Floating Me, but it does not work at all.

Breaking Orbit is pretty good. They just don't have a cohesive enough sound to really sound great. Again, I think it's the vocals that ruin it for me.

Have you heard Minora?  It reminds me a bit of that Aussie prog sound, though they are from Sweden.  The singer sounds a lot like Daniel Tompkins.

They're on the same label as Port Noir.  After listening to Port Noir (and loving it), I went to their label's website to see what else might be good on there.  Unfortunately, Minora was the only thing that stuck out to me.  It took me a while to sift through that artist list, too.  The things we do to find new music...

Kamelot has my highest recommendation.  Excellent band that you should be able to digest.  You may also consider Vanden Plas, Sieges Even, Seventh Wonder, Votum, and Subsignal.  All excellent!

Similar to Caligula's Horse:
Kingcrow (Eidos is a great album!)
Between The Buried and Me (the new Coma Ecliptic is stellar!)
Amoral
Intervals
Arcane Roots
The Contortionist (my fav of the bunch – the song arranging, chords and melodic lines, dynamics and textures are brilliant!).

Karnivool are special, though, and all bands I've heard being compared to them usually let me down by comparison. The first time I heard Vool was like the first time I heard Sting's Ten Summoners Tales some twenty-something years ago. Brilliant technical musicians playing creatively, not showing off, always supporting the main theme of the song and supporting the vocals in a manner that allowed the lyrics to clearly express their intent to the listener. The way Karnivool can weave texture, melody and unique chord structures together, with unique song forms, sets the bar above a lot of the current bands out there (IMO).

You may also want to check out:
Nothing More (Commercial. Great polished songs. Lyrical content close to the rebellious attitude of Vool.)
Voyager (more metal, but another great Aussie Band)
Jolly
Aeon Zen
Chaos Divine
Klone
Soen (if you like the Arcane suggestion, they are very similar sounding and I prefer Soen)

if you're digging the djent craze:

Special Providence (djent)
Scale The Summit (djent)
Pomegranate Tiger (djent)

Agree about Skyharbor & Vola (big thumbs up for those two!)

I just got the (new) Caligula's Horse, and the singer is sometimes a dead ringer for the singer in Haken.

A couple more bands with the modern Aussie prog metal sound for you to check out not mentioned earlier in this thread:

Teramaze (Melbourne)

Anubis (Sydney)

Projected twin (Adelaide)

Unitopia (Adelaide) Older style prog but very polished.

I can dig up more Aussie prog bands from the '00's if anyone is interested.

Oh! – also, other great Aussie bands you may want to check out as well... unfortunately, tend to lean towards the growl vocals. Bands that are more groove/black metal, but crossover to PA's tech/extreme genre...

Northlane
Stories
In Hearts Wake

From France...
Erra

and the new Lithium Dawn kicks butt (and doesn't have the growls :) A great last minute addition to the 2015 "best of" lists.

OK another one for you.

A new band from Brisbane, Guards of May - their debut album recently released and is a mix of prog, metal and alt rock. Very polished for a new band.

Some of the labels that were specializing in metalcore in its heyday are signing bands that follow this formula.  Rise records is particularly guilty of this.  Pop vocals over top of unoriginal djent riffs.  Scream verses, sing choruses.  Breakdown.  Repeat.

I love djent done well (Tesseract, Monuments, Intervals), but I'm not into this new offshoot of the genre, either.

And yes, try Intronaut.  The new one really clicked with me, whereas their previous efforts did not.

I guess that would explain why every time I cross-referenced Karnivool on any site, Birds of Tokyo would come up.  They didn't seem like a very good match for Karnivool at the time; in fact, it just seemed as if these sites were recommending them simply for the fact that they are from the same country.

Since I posted all those bands from cross-referencing Karnivool a few weeks back, I have gotten into The Butterfly Effect quite a bit.  I felt like their first two albums were typical nu-metal, and they didn't do much for me.  But something clicked later in their career, and the last two albums are pretty solid, espcially Imago.  Imago ditches the nu-metal thing for a more atmospheric rock vibe.  Something that might fit better along side Karnivool or even 10 Years.

I've also been listening to a few other bands that may loosely fit into the category of this thread:

Lion Shepherd
Renaissance of Fools
Atmospheres
*Shels
Crippled Black Phoenix

I am giving Progressive Metal suggestions with clean vocals, which is exactly what Caligula's Horse is.  Of the bands I suggested, Caligula's Horse sounds most like Votum, but I will create playlists of all the bands that I suggested.

Also agree with the singer of Floating me. Important to note that it's not the same singer as Cog though. Lucious Borich (drummer) is in Cog and Floating me.  The Gower brothers from Cog have a side project "The Occupants" which is worth checking out.

Very Genesis on this one...

I have to say, this thread has hit the nail on the head for me. Thanks to everyone who are posting these suggestions. I was seeking out bands like Cog and Karnivool for the past year and this thread has lead me to so many other great bands.

Not sure if they were mentioned but I really got into "Sleepmakeswaves" over the past couple years. Another Aussie act. They're more Post rock/metal but very good imo.  Took a couple listens to get used to the lack of a singer as they're the first post rock band I've really gotten into but it was worth it.

I'm thinking the same Beer. Future belongs to Karnivool and I hope that their next release gonna be influented by a new electronic a lot. Less of a rock, more experiments like Asymmetry's tittle track.

I just bought Bloom, and whilst it is a very good listen, I can't help but feel a strong Indie approach to their music, not to mention an overly catchy and, dare I say, commercial thinking behind it all. And whilst listening to it, my nerd sister comes barging into my room saying the singer sounds like blah-blah (a dude who died in the Mississippi). But they're pretty decent talent really, from Down Under too.

With all due respect, it's pretty lame what they're doing with his work.  20 years of rehashed, posthumous releases...the most recent release is simply preying on his fan base, releasing boombox demos with previously released live covers, and calling it a "new album".  And people are buying it...it's #58 on the billboard top 200 right now.

I like Sleepmakeswaves music, but instrumental music is tough for me to grab onto.  Something about the band Heights works for me, though:

Also, I don't recall if the band Rendezvous Point has been brought up yet in this thread.  The drummer apparently played in Leprous, and their sound is similar, but more accessible than Leprous:

Slow build, but worth the wait.

Wow! I stepped away from this thread for a bit and some serious heavy hitter suggestions came in. Lion Shepherd, Teramaze, Sleep Parade (already knew about them, but gave them a chance and they stuck), and The Occupants. All great stuff.

Some bands I have found this past year that you all may be interested in are:

O'Brother (Kinda post/rock with more approachable sound):  http://obrother.bandcamp.com/album/endless-light" rel="nofollow - http://obrother.bandcamp.com/album/endless-light
Stare at the Clouds (alternative/prog metal):  http://stareattheclouds.bandcamp.com/album/this-clear-divide" rel="nofollow - http://stareattheclouds.bandcamp.com/album/this-clear-divide

Quiet Child (a bit like Porcupine Tree):  http://quietchild1.bandcamp.com/album/the-ever-present-shadow" rel="nofollow - http://quietchild1.bandcamp.com/album/the-ever-present-shadow

The Earth and Everything in it: (what I like to call Coldplay alt rock/metal)  http://theearthandeverythinginit.bandcamp.com/album/celebrations" rel="nofollow - http://theearthandeverythinginit.bandcamp.com/album/celebrations

Glad to help you find some new music! Likewise I've been playing The Earth and Everything in it from your recommendation and will add it to my playlist.
I'm regularly hunting out new music and have worked out a couple of good approaches:
- Spotify weekly recommendations are generally quite good
- This site & progressiveears, threads like this and the new releases thread on progears.
- threads about new releases on bandcamp & eMusic

My fellow Agent Fresco freaks, I have found a band that could be hit or miss. They're called 22. The singer is a bit derivative of Agent Fresco's singer, but still very good. Just a warning though, they're pretty damn weird.

Good find, sir!  I'll be digging into 22 a bit more this week.

Here's my latest find, Young Cardinals.  They're a French atmospheric rock band with some killer heavy grooves.

They're on the same label as Mars Chronicles, an amazing french prog-metal band.

Man, I have a ton more stuff to listen to now.  Thanks for all the suggestions!

Wow, I haven't heard from Falling Up in quite a while.  Their "Dawn Escapes" album is pretty solid, and that came out in 2005.  They've changed a lot over the years.  After "Fangs", they kind of lost me, so maybe I'll give the new stuff a shot.

The Ocean is pretty wild, too.  I got into them a few years ago.  Their current singer made them a lot better.

I haven't heard any of the other discoveries, so I'm stoked to check them out.

These have been my most recent finds:

Dream The Electric Sleep is one that's been on my radar for a bit, but their new album is reeling me in:

Khoma is a very recent discovery, but it's solid post rock.  Same label as Minora.

Speaking of Minora, they have a new single out, and it's solid.

Benthic is the singer from Eden Circus, doing some heavier material.

Poem has a bit of a Tool vibe, but I don't think it's straying too far from the path of this thread.

I have a few more, but I think this post is long enough.  Hope you like them, and please keep the suggestions coming!

Here is another Aussie band you may not have heard of before & not mentioned here. Like Thieves, from Brisbane, the singer is ex. The Butterfly Effect (one of Australia's better modern prog bands but broke up a few years ago).

Nice! Great suggestions. I'm seeing Plini with Animals as Leaders and Intervals in San Francisco in a few months. Why not see a musical genius during your lifetime? I'm definitely buying Benthic, Minora and Poem. Also, I didn't know Dream the Electric Sleep came out with another album, so pretty stoked about that. Jolly, The Ocean, Deadly Circus Fire, and Like Thieves have all gotten regular ear lovin time. All solid bands. When I have a collection of worthy finds again I'll post them here. Thanks again for the recs!

Great find, man.  I heard these guys a while ago, and forgot about them.  I appreciate the reminder.  This band is solid.

The Butterfly Effect's "Imago" is my favorite "posthumous" find this year.  Anything connected to this band, whether style-wise or member-wise, is something I'm interested in.

It's been a pretty good music discovery run for the past month or so for me.  I don't want to get too far off track with this thread, so I'll narrow it down to what I feel fits here.  I know how overwhelming it can be to see a laundry list of new bands to listen to, anyway.

Here's one of Basick Records' new artists, Foes.  Basick Records is more known for Djent metal, but there are a few bands on this label aside from the aforementioned that suit this thread (see also Skyharbor, Circles, Intervals "A Voice Within")

Hard to pick a track, since this album is only 10 days old, but this one is an early favorite:

One other find I'll share:

This band Face the Maybe really took me by surprise.  It's heavy, with some amazing guitar work:

Enjoy!

Nice. Got a few FOES albums. The singer for Face the Maybe sounds a bit like the original Evans Blue singer (a great band). Here's what I've discovered lately

A Dog Called Ego (Post-Rock. A bit like FOES):  http://adogcalledego.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-elevators" rel="nofollow - https://adogcalledego.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-elevators

Defy the Ocean (Post-Rock / Alt-metal):  http://music.defytheocean.com/album/elderflower" rel="nofollow - http://music.defytheocean.com/album/elderflower

Watercolour Ghosts (Post-Rock / Alt-Metal):  http://watercolourghosts.bandcamp.com/album/watercolour-ghosts" rel="nofollow - https://watercolourghosts.bandcamp.com/album/watercolour-ghosts

Car Bomb (Brutal Metal with interesting signatures):  http://carbomb.bandcamp.com/album/meta" rel="nofollow - https://carbomb.bandcamp.com/album/meta

The Band Royale (Space Rock/metal):  http://thebandroyale.bandcamp.com/album/as-long-as-the-money-lasted" rel="nofollow - https://thebandroyale.bandcamp.com/album/as-long-as-the-money-lasted

The Demon Parade (Indie):  http://thedemonparade.bandcamp.com/album/chameleon-ep" rel="nofollow - https://thedemonparade.bandcamp.com/album/chameleon-ep

Sorry I keep linking bandcamp, but it's the only music discovery site that allows a lot of freedom in searching for similar music that I've found (tried spotify, last.fm, and a few others but they don't get the job done).

Caligula's Horse is from my neck of the woods and I thought they were going to be the local opening act for Katatonia who I'll be seeing here in Brisbane next week.

Qlaye Face is a great find.  These guys are right up my alley.

I'm 4 songs into A Dog Called Ego, and I'm feeling that so far, as well.

Agreed that Evans Blue is solid.  I liked the first two albums with the new singer, as well.  I've only heard snippets of the new album they put out this year, and it didn't seem promising.  I'll give it a full listen today.

I just discovered Foes previous album, Antecedence, and I think I like it better than the new one.

I'll be checking out the other recommendations this week.

Here are my recent finds:

These guys have been around for a few years, though I just discovered them recently.  It's kind of an odd mix of styles, but it's catchy.  They're on the same label as Black Peaks, which has been referenced on this thread before:

Basick Records is on a roll with finding post-metal stuff.  Here are two new ones from them:

One last thing - I know this is off topic, but I've really been getting into more chill stuff that finds itself on the prog side, yet still has an edge to it.  Stuff like Charlie Barnes "More Stately Mansions", Crippled Black Phoenix "Bronze", or Tesseract "Errai".  Any recommendations?

Crazy, I was listening to Our Oceans before I typed my post earlier!  I was listening to Exivious, and decided to check out their site to see if they were still active.  Our Oceans is a bit of a departure from their previous work in Exivious, but I like it.

Any band that has ex-members of Cynic is something I'm going to give a shot.  Solid stuff, and exactly the kind of stuff I'm seeking right now.  Thanks!

Hey if you can dig a little instrumental and slightly postrocky music, I'd heartily recommend the New Zealand act Jakob, which sport a fair amount of chill-out vibes:

Damn! Riviere are really good. Also, didn't know Arcane Roots has a new album.

For music that's chill with an edge, I can think of a few, but they're different in style. So my suggestions will sort of be a shotgun blast of styles to see what sticks. Some bands are somewhat popular, so sorry if you've heard them already.

Jagwar - Like the Leaves They're almost a carbon copy of Tesseract, but still have a good sound

Jusska - Limbo / Also djent with clean vocals

The Mayan Factor - Warflower Acoustic mixed with electric early 2000s prog rock

Ayurveda - Serpant and Shaman More chill than anything, but some of the songs on the album get a bit hard

Being - Cosmonaut Great djent. They do a lot of remixes of their songs

John Grant - GMF His sound can get a bit popy, but his lyrics are freakin amazing

Sinew - Chaging Loki

20 Days In - The Necklace

Children of Nova - The Order One of my favorite bands.

The Chronicles of Israfel - Equinigma

Also you may want to check out Fair to Midland, but I have a feeling you've already heard of them. Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Jagwar I listened to for about 2 minutes, then proceeded to get it off of their bandcamp site shortly thereafter.  I definitely have a soft spot for djent metal with clean vocals.

The only two I've heard from that list are The Mayan Factor (they're local to me), and Sinew.  Sinew's cover of Seasons in the Abyss is great, especially the video.

I'll be checking the rest of your suggestions out today and tomorrow.  Thanks!

Here a few more chilled prog artists I'm listening to right now. IZZ, The Reign of Kindo, The Band Royal, Blueneck, Starsabout, The Arborist. Posted a number of other bands in the 'discovering obscure prog' thread.

Enjoy and do post back what you like.

So I was listening to Jagwar some more, and once the second song came on, I recognized what sounded so familiar about it - it has to be some reincarnation of The Safety Fire.  The style is identical, and the timeline seems to match up with The Safety Fire's breakup, and Jagwar's emergence.  Also, the name Jagwar comes from a Safety Fire song, which would be an alarming coincidence if there was no connection, especially when considering the stylistic similarities.  However, the band member listings aren't the same, and two of the Safety Fire guys went on to form Good Tiger, another solid band that needs a mention on this thread (if that hasn't already occurred).

TL;DR - listen to the Safety Fire, if you liked Jagwar.

Deanbob - (EDIT: I was mistaken about seeing Reign of Kindo live.  I was thinking of another band, but I have heard Reign of Kindo before).

I really liked Blueneck's last album.  I'll be checking the other stuff out today.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys.  My playlist will be full today.

I think The Band Royale is going to be a winner for me.  It's found it's way into my regular rotation already.  Love the vibe on that record.

Jusska and a few others were put on my list to add to the collection over time.  I've found that if I add a ton of music to my library all at once, albums tend to get lost.  So I trickle them in so that I can give the albums the attention they deserve.

Thanks again for the recommendations!

What an awsum thread! I just went through it and it's great seeing people with my taste in music. :-)

I registered on prog archives just to be able to post a reply. This is my first time replying to a thread on the internet.

My fav bands atm are:

Caligulas Horse
Arcane
Port Noir
Tesseract
Skyharbour
Dead letter circus
Karnivool
Leprous
Katatonia
Like Thieves
Butterfly effect
Monuments - only latest album.
Rishloo
Cire

As you can see most of these bands have been mentioned a few times. So i am really excited to try out all the other suggestions. I have a lot of new bands lined up in my playlist right now

I just have to mention Arcane again. They have only been mentioned twice in this thread. Arcane features the same lead singer as Caligulas horse (Jim Grey). Their first album isn't that great, but its their second (and sadly, final) album (Known/Learned) that is an absolute masterpiece. It is a work of art! I very highly recommend it! Arcane worked five years to complete a double album of more than 2 hours playing time and it's quite a journey. I have only good things to say about it.

Anyway. Thanks again for this thread. Ive been having a hard time finding new music. I am very picky.

I will let you know which of the new bands I become a fan off.

Daaamn. I have so many bands to listen to now! Added your newest recommendations to my list

As I went through this thread I started making a list of bands I’ve never heard off

My list now totals 59 bands!

I went through 5 bands and downloaded Vola, Exit Ten and Transcience. I feel like spoiled child. Having 3 bands I like at one time!

Usually I will find a band I like once in a few months and I will treasure that band, because it was so difficult to find good music. Over the past weekend I went on one of my searches and I went through 64 bands and couldn’t even find one I liked. So I was feeling hopeless, thinking that I have now found everything I will ever like and that there is nothing else out there. LoL.

Anyway so I a am currently listening to Vola and Exit Ten and I am loving it! Sitting with a huge smile on my face at work.

I still have 54 bands to listen to, so it is going to take me quite a while to go through them all. As soon as I find something I like I start binge listening until I am ready to move on and try something new.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. Will def continue to follow this thread. I have total confidence in you guys’ taste in music. :-)

@deanbob

I missed your reply

Thanks for the link to the thread. Will check it out and add the bands to my evergrowing list. I had no idea there were so many great bands i dont know.

Its weird finding people with my taste in music. Usually friends and family here in South Africa hav no interest in what i share with them. No ones band interest overlaps with mine. So you have to keep your enthuisiasm about a new find to yourself. Hehe

I think working through all these new bands will take me a year

Jay! So happy!

Your welcome. That is what communities like this forum are all about, an opportunity to share a common passion.

Have fun - and do post if you find a band that you think the rest of us haven't heard!

tbonson04, nice list of obscure bands to listen to, thanks for posting.

Good recs moniquebabst. I really like Cire.

If anyone's a fan of Mastodon, they're releasing a new album and the single is out, called Sultan's Curse. Definitely one of my most anticipated albums of 2017. Also, I don't know if you guys heard, but the guitarist for Caligula's Horse, Zac, has decided to leave the band to pursue his side project Opus of a Machine. If you haven't heard them, check them out. They are awesome. Sad he's leaving, but at least we'll get more Opus of a Machine material.

Here' a few bands I've found in the past weeks:

Signals of Bedlam - Rule 41        If you like Karnivool and Tool, chances are you'll love these guys.

Colony - Malady

Burak Ozmucur - The Departure      Post rock/metal

Distorted Harmony - Natural Selection             You may have heard these guys, they're relatively well known in the prog world.

City of Iron - The Temple

Dora the Destroyer - Birth      Great instrumental prog
