I read somewhere that Gore Vidal described directors as parasites living off the efforts of scriptwriters.
What do you think?

The Director.
Evidence...
Stanley Kubrick - The Shining vs Joel Schumacher - Batman

Need I say more?

I would have to say, at the end of the day, the Editor (in conjunction with the Director, of course) has the single most impact on how a movie turns out.   You can film reams of footage but it's usually how it's all put together that governs the content and pace of a flick.   Though I'd also have to disagree with Mr. Vidal, as it is the director who has the vision; he or she sets the tone, character and feel of a movie from simple words on paper and a crew of actors and techs.

Without the writer there's nothing there to begin with. So obviously.

Wouldn't have helped - "move" is spelled correctly.
