For many years I've noticed a connection berween And You And I and Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy". The text in blue show the main points.
- First line could be about Hari Seldons Plan
- Second line is referring to The Foundations settling at the edge of the Galaxy, to re-establish order when civilisation declines
- The third blue line is the clincher for me, mentioning the Mutant Enemy (The Mule) that could have upset the whole Foundations plans.
I'm not saying the whole song is about the trilogy, just that Anderson must have read the books and used some ideas.
Any Comments?
I. cord of life (anderson/bruford/howe/squire)
A man conceived a moment's answers to the dream, Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes. As a foundation left to create the spiral aim, A movement regained and regarded both the same, All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you.
Changed only for a sight of sound, the space agreed. Between the picture of time behind the face of need, Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid, Emotion revealed as the ocean maid, All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you. Oh.
Turn round tailor, coins and Assaulting all the mornings of the crosses Interest shown, never know Presenting one another to the cord, their fruitless worth; All left dying, rediscovered cords are broken, Of the door that turned round, locked inside To close the cover, the mother earth. All the interest shown, they won't To turn one another, to the sign hide, hold, they won't At the time tell you, watching the world, To float your climb. watching all of the world, Watching us go by.
And you and i climb over the sea to the valley, And you and i reached out for reasons to call.
Ii. eclipse (anderson/bruford/squire)
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid,
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid, As a movement regained and regarded both the same, All complete in the side of seeds of life with you.
Iii. the preacher the teacher (anderson/bruford/howe/squire)
Sad preacher nailed upon the coloured door of time; Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme. There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify; Political ends, as sad remains, will die. Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you. Ooh, ooh.
I listened hard but could not see Life tempo change out and inside me. The preacher trained in all to lose his name; The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same. In the end, we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalise That the truth of the man maturing in his eyes, All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you.
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid, As a moment regained and regarded both the same, Emotion revealed as the ocean maid, A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you.
Iv. apocalypse (anderson/bruford/howe/squire)
And you and i climb, crossing the shapes of the morning. And you and i reach over the sun for the river. And you and i climb, clearer, towards the movement. And you and i called over valleys of endless seas.

You and me both Snow Dog. Everytime I hear And You and I those first
few lines always remind me of Foundation and Empire. Was only watching
the live from QPR earlier this evening and those lines had the same
effect on me. Perhaps Anderson was reading Foundation and Empire at the
time of penning this tune.
[edit] I think both the song and Asimov's book were released around the same time

well, maybe - strikes me as a bit of a stretch.
since the title is 'and you and i', is this just the perspective of a couple of folks somewhere midstream in the plan?
why then the focus on preacher/teacher? preacher could be seldon, but the line mentioning 'nailed' seems to refer elsewhere... so is teacher seldon? doesn't seem to fit. it's been a while since i've read them all, but except for the seldon, the mule, and daneel, there isn't a whole lot of personal continuity and the latter is unknown until the very end.
the volume of the lyrics seem to be in another direction, so it'd be a passive reference, but anderson probably read asimov at some point in his life.... who knows?

This is the only point that I'm making. That the books influenced some of the lyrics slightly. Not that the song is at all based on the books!

I think you have it there snow dog. That's why I suggested earlier that
Anderson may have been reading or read the series when the song was
penned.
as foundation left to create the spiral aim... where else would this come from.

There's also the trilogy written by Gregory Benford, Greg Bear and
David Brin (each wrote one book), which I think is set between Prelude
and Forward. They're not bad, but not as good as Asimov's books.

There is a connection between the Foundation series and You and I? One
of my favourite pieces of literature, and one of my favourite tracks?
This must be investigated immediately!

The Last Question
by Isaac Asimov:
Dee Sub Wun said, "What is wrong?"
"The stars are dying. The original star is dead."
"They must all die. Why not?"
"But when all energy is gone, our bodies will finally die, and you and I
with them."

Mark W. Tiedemann, a science fiction author answers to one of his readers ( http://www.marktiedemann.com/distal03.htm - source ).
"He goes on, then, to say he's pleased I'm
an admirer of classic progressive rock, particularly ELP and Yes.
"Jon Anderson," he says, "must have written 'And You And I' with Asimov's
'Foundation' in mind..."
I must confess I never put the two together.
What an idea. I'm going to relisten to that and see how it fits.
I always regarded "And You And I" as an essentially religious song.
But as to my taste in music, I have threatened
to do a long piece on my appreciation of these bands and that music.
It will probably take more than one of these, but an opening salvo would
be--
ELP and Yes are, to my mind, science fictional
in that they are very much future-feeling endeavors. Emerson, Lake
& Palmer blatantly so. "Karnevil 9" is nothing less than a mini
science fiction opera. So, too, is Yes's "Relayer", which is ostensibly
about war, but has such a depth of Orwellian darkness and the possibility
of Armageddon leading to a bright future at the end.

From http://yescography.tripod.com/closetot.htm - http://yescography.tripod.com/closetot.htm :
"The lyrics for "And You and I" are more obscure. Yes expert Steven Sullivan
has theorised a possible link to Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series of
science fiction novels, suggested by lines such as "As a foundation left
to create the spiral aim". "
So, Snow Dog, it seems as others have pondered over this connection as
well. You're not alone! And "Close to the Edge" could refer to the
position of the foundation at the edge of the galaxy. But leaving the
speculations, I agree it's not at all impossible that Andersson might
have been influenced by Asimov.
