After being away for a while, and just now perusing many of the threads on the main page and the DNRTM section, I can only conclude that this forum is getting steadily dumber and nastier, as the average member age continues to decrease, and more and more ignorant and anti-social youngsters flock to the site. Many seem to be here only to cause trouble, and offend the majority. Many seem to be blocked users who've returned to get "revenge." Whatever -- the overall level of intelligence and civility here has plummeted, and will continue to do so, I expect. I believe that the good old days are irretrievably gone -- "success" breeds excess, and the web seems to be frequented mainly by immature assholes. I think I'll generally stick to writing reviews, PMs, and posting in the Collabs section, as the inmates have clearly taken over the asylum. As with the wider world, so with the PA forums? Kudos to the Admins and all of a decent bent who "soldier on," and try to reason with these idiots and increase the level of "discourse" here, but reading the inane, incoherent and hostile "posts" of teenage boys who want to be "bad," instead of making friends and expanding their knowledge of good music, is just not for me. (I bet we're losing old-timers at a record rate....) Bah!
I'm genuinely sorry to be a wet blanket (again), and I have no ready "fix" to propose, but I don't think I'm alone in feeling this way. Seriously, I think that my continuing to read 90% of the crap that is posted lately will inevitably destroy my motivation to write reviews... Does anyone else out there feel increasingly angered, depressed, and "de-motivated" when reading the barrage of outright twaddle that seems to typify this place these days? It's "just a music forum," I know, but it USED to be a FUN place! BTW, I may just hunt down and kill the next person who writes "way overrated!" Thoughts, anyone? Encouraging words?

I agree with you. Although I haven't been a member for very long, I have been a frequent visitor to this site for nearly two years, and have enjoyed reading posts in the forum since it was created (Jan/Feb. 04). It is sad to see this, but isn't the goal of this site to introduce many new people to the world of progressive rock? Although there are the inevitable excesses, we must concentrate on the immense good that progarchives has done...I owe 99% of my prog knowledge/enjoyment to this wonderful site, and I'm sure there are many others. I wish that you decide to stay and post regularly, Mr. Rideout...because I very much enjoy reading your posts, along with all of the other "old-timers". Before joining, I used to visit the site frequently and read the forums. I remember the times when Tony still posted as Reed Lover and Karny was around. It made an impression of a very nice and polite forum, and front page was clean. No Flowerchild, no Belva, no Zookas. No nasty threads like that I 'just listened to sebtp and foxtrot' threads. Personally Peter, I tend to steer clear of participating in the DNRTM threads myself. As a very general observation, I don't feel they add much to the site, and as you imply, just provide an outlet for pointless and often aggressive discussion. There have been a few exceptions, where intelligent debate has taken place, but even then I find them of limited value as I'm only here for the music. It's easy enough just to ignore that section completely though. As a whole, I think the discussion in the main prog lounge has been reasonably good of late, with the exception of the threads posted in the wrong place by people too lazy to think about where they belong, and all those dull "Rate my collection" threads. I appreciate what you say about keeping to the CZ and PMs, but it is folk like you and rest of the old guard who can raise the quality of the discussions in the main forum, and set an example for others to follow. |

Regarding Peters comments: To respond or not to respond. Is that the question? I think it would be fair to say that a number of members have at one time or another, made comments that could be considered offensive, insensitive, hostile or inappropriate to another person. This could be either innocent or by design. There are some who apologise quite readily when this has been pointed out by the offended person but not everyone has the sensitivity, consideration or manners to do this. IMO it is a reflection of the societies we live in and from my observation it is not always the younger members of the forum that do this as some of our younger members are very decent and considerate people with a refreshing attitude. The great thing about a forum is that you can choose to respond to any post/thread or not and if you aren't interested in a thread, you can start your own .------------- Eternity |

I also was checking in here since a long time, maybe last summer, but I didn't have the courage to subscribe (My english was a major concern). And I really feel it was different before I decided to enter as a regular member. Maybe I am part of `those annoying youngster, I don't know, but still, I hope no one will leave because of how it seem to be changing. Maybe there could be a section only for people with over (100) posts. It's a lame solution, I know, but still you can avoid the ones just going here to make trouble then get away after. There probably is a kind of section like that already existing I am not aware of, because I am not a collaborator or reviewer... ------------- Vive le Québec libre!... |

Not to mention the threads which are disparaging to women or make fun of aging musicians' appearances. When I joined this forum, it was to talk about my favourite kind of music (though, according to some, as a woman I'm not supposed to understand anything about it), not to see an increasing amount of thug-like behaviour. I don't know whether there's anything to be done about such people, who seem to infest any kind of forum or discussion board - but I really hope people like Peter and Snow Dog don't give up this place, because it needs them! |

I propose a solution: let us choose any new member after having verified his reliability: those new members should be invited here, taken from other music sites, like me, so that it would be possible to evaluate their behaviour from the posts they make on the other musical boards. for instance, useful idiot, me and some other members here come from rateyourmusic.com everybody knows that it takes members like us. there are tons of prog fans who would be happy to discover the advantages of being a member of PA!
