oh yeah.. it will be coming.. with the amount of subtlety you have all come to love and expect from me.
which means none.
128 classic (pre - 1986) prog albums in one bracket
128 modern (1986-2013) albums in a second bracket
only one album per group per era..

as a prelim to the unveiling of the albums...
a couple of notes. As one might imagine, limiting it to one album per group made for some hard choices.
The hard part is of course we could debate till the cows come home on
many of these. In some cases we did, many changes were made over since we started making the lists (right after the band contest ended).
Ange is a a perfect example and one we really debated. d Some think Emile Jacotey is the definative Ange album..
others think Au-delà du délire.. some others (including myself) think
it is Par Les Fils Des Mandrin.
so which to include.. hard choices. We could have used the album charts here but what is the point of doing the polls if one takes those into account. Those charts have given us winners haven't they?
On that note. The albums from the 'big heavies'. ie Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Genesis and (ahem) Jethro Dull.
Again we know which albums everyone loves.. and when it came to the band contest. .for all the fun that was.. we knew who the last ones standing would be. So to keep things interesting.. we choose 'lesser' classics from those groups. We sort of want people to judge the music.. not just name of the group on the album. I am more curious to see how a later album from Genesis stands up against a great, but less acclaimed album from another group.
or to be to point.. I don't want to spend the months and months these contests are going to take.. when we have 1000 CTTE v. Foxtrot v. TAAB polls. boring.
since we have leveled the playing field (in theory at least) there will be no seeding like we did in the band contest. We have 128 albums in each section and some night this week I'll do random selection and bracketize them.
Now for the shear scope of this. 256 albums.. whoa. So to help speed things up slightly. The first round of both brackets will be 4 album polls... the two highest vote getters will advance. Doing that saves a full month of running time.

time to start filling in your brackets. Bracket winner gets.. something..
Progspin - Prog News without taste, flavor, access, knowledge or any semblance of discretion.
BREAKING NEWS!! - The tournament committee chairman has left his office and is now holding court in the bar!
Progspin was able to follow the tournament chairman, Mad Micky, to the bar and obtained the following interview:
PS: So what can you tell us prior to the unveiling of the brackets? Micky: Buy me Vodka Tonic or two and I guess I can tell a bit about what we did. ...
.....
.........
..............
Micky: Cheers Mate! Now what do you want to know?
PS: Let's start with the selection process?
Micky: Well much of the work went on behind the closed doors of the Colabotor Zone there at ProgArchives. Unlike the Band contest that was for the most part.. no brainers and more a question of who is left out rather than who to include the album contest was a far more difficult venture so I enlisted the help of the various genre specialists to help put together the lists.
PS: Did you get a lot of help
Micky: Damn right I did! It couldn't have happened without the help. I thought something like this, to do it WELL, was beyond just the input of one person. I did get lots of suggestions and helpful advice, not just on the albums but on all the details of it. How to deal with certain groups and albums that could potentially unbalance the contest, along with find details such as cut off dates and types and numbers of albums per group to be included.
PS. What do you mean by 'unbalanced'?
Micky: Look man.. we all had a frickin blast with the Battle of the Bands contest but lets be honest as the contest ground down a certain air of inevitability set it. Perhaps it there from the start. For all the fun of interesting matchups, and potential upsets you knew who the last 4 to 6 standing generally would be. A cynic could say we could have dispenced with the whole tournament and run the 1000th installment of a Yes v. Genesis v. KC v. Floyd poll. We didn't want that with this contest
PS: I know what you mean.. for me the fun ended as soon as ELP went out and don't get me started about half ass English groups beat non-English whose output and quality dwarfed those of the more 'popular'
Micky: haha yeah man I hear you there but lets not go there again. So while we couldn't have a band poll without the usual English suspects, what we could do and did do was muddy up the waters a bit.
PS: how?
Micky: Easy. Listen man, we know that CTTE, TAAB, WYWH and others like that are beloved and would win any poll when not paired against each other. What they would do on their path to meeting deep into the tournament is leave tire tracks over great, but less heralded albums on their path to the late rounds so we had either of two choices. Elimiinate those groups (the big 6) completely or try to make things even more interesting by choosing lesser acclaimed albums from those groups and pairing them off against albums of likely far greater quality but of far less acclaim and personality.
PS: the interesting part being..
Micky: exactly.. to see how people actually vote. It might well be that later albums from the big 6 still do move on but what it will not have, is the air of inevitability.
PS: sounds interesting. So tell me about the modern lists.
Micky: obviously we didn't have to worry as much as certain things with the modern list as we did the. Our biggest issues were the cut off date between the modern and classic eras and whether to include recent (2014) releases. We changed the cut off date several times, especially as the lists began to take shape. More in relation to some albums that simply didn't fit in the era they were originally placed.
PS: Great! I notice you had previously announced the classic album list but I haven't seen the modern album list. When can we expect to see that?
Micky: While I thought the classic list was relatively easy, they are 'classics' for a reason you know, the modern list was harder IMO for the shear amount of quality yet unstandably 'un-classic' works in the last few years. It does make it harder to select a good list. We do have a list of 128 but since that bracket won't kick off till for nearly 2 weeks, I am sitting on it to have more time to look it over and modify as needed.
PS: Well Micky .. it is time
Micky: Damn right it is. To announce the brackets. As noted. A prize will be awarded to the person who has the highest score for each of the brackets so post your predictions in this thread!
and without further ado.. the classic album brackets. Saturday the contest kicks off with 16 4-album polls. Top 2 vote getters in each poll move on to the second round.

yeah.. sorry if I wasn't clear. The scope of running 256 albums against each other sort of called for a bit of fat trimming.
only the first round gets 4 albums against each other.
To use the very top as an example.
poll #1 will be a 4 band poll (the first 4 bands in the bracket from the top) Poll #2 will have the next 4 etc etc...
Quatermass (1970) - Quatermass
Eros (1981) - Dun
Lord of the Rings (1970) - Bo Hansson
Aja (1977) - Steely Dan
we have a poll.. the top 2 vote getters move on and will fill the 2 2nd round bracket slots and will face each other in the 2nd round.
doing that saved 4 weeks of polls.. this is going to be a long enough process as it is and thought it could be a nice twist as one will need to vote carefully as many (like me) will note many first round contests will have more than one album we really.. really adore.

But you're doing the whole round simultaneously though, aren't you, Micky? You're not doing it group for group? With two from each group going through from the first round, how will that save time? Won't two bands go through if it's head-to-head, too? So you're just having fewer polls, not saving time? Or am I way off now?

it saves a month. I figure 16 polls a week is likely the most we can or should do at one time
256 albums.. that is 128 polls (at 2 albums per ) and at 16 a week. That is two months to do the first round
However If I do 4 albums per .. I cut the time needed to do the first round in half
256.. 64 polls (of 4 albums each). At 16 a week. That is one month to do the first round.
after the first round.. it is business as usual. This week we do the top of the classic bracket, next week the top of the modern, the following weeks will be the bottoms of the classic and modern respectively.
If it sounds confusing.. trust me.. t should be really clear as we move forward.

OK, so you're not doing the whole classic first round in one go. Now I get it. Thanks for explaining.

NP!!
next saturday.. the top half of the classic bracket (64 albums, 16 polls)
it runs for a week.. get 32 'winners' into 2nd round
that vote ends in a week then that day the top half of the modern kicks off..
then the week after.. that one ends.. and the bottom half of the classic bracket
then the week after.. the bottom half of the modern.
then we go 2nd round..
top half classic again but now shifting to 2 album polls.. 16 polls of the 32 2nd round wiiners
etc etc..

Progspin - Prog News without taste, flavor, access, knowledge or any semblance of discretion.
BREAKING NEWS!! - The tournament committee chairman has left his office and is now holding court in the bar! We were able to push our way through the mass of correspondents from other prog sites, varous hangers-on (musicians and Mick-groupies) to get an exclusive one on one with the man himself.
PS: heydy hoo Mick. So what do you think of the first days action so far.
Mick: man what a hoot. I actually feel sorry for some of these suckas that see 'Genesis album' or 'Camel album' and immediately cast their votes. What a world of great music out there. The selection committee did a DAMN good job putting together a good list of albums for everyone to duel over. I definitely want to thank everyone for all the help and input. One person alone couldn't have done it, not as well at least as I believe it was done here.
PS: any regrets?
Mick: one really stands out... that we didn't get the Talking Heads into the contest. Of course not every great album, not every great group got an album into the contest but still... that particular omission sticks out to me. Especially since we went with Discipline as the choice for KC.
PS: any others?
Mick: one lesser one I suppose... I would have really liked to have worked in more great 'prog' albums from artists not exactly known AS prog artists. I went into this fully expecting to have albums like Satanic Majesties or Quadrophenia even the Allmans included and see how they matched up. However when push came to shove there were so many great ones from traditional prog artists along with those on the fringe, ie more progressive than prog, that we had to limit ourselves. 128 albums sounded like a lot, until we started filling the slots haha.
PS: So what about the modern albums?
Mick: funny you ask, we just finalized the list this afternoon. Since you are a sponser in good standing I suppose we can grant Progspin the exclusive for its debut.
PS: oh man.. that would be great. Would you?
Micky: yeah sure. Here are the 128 albums to be included in the modern album contest which will start a week from today after the first batch of classic album polls is closed. We will bracket them tomorrow and announce it..
PS: on Progspin?
Micky: yeah sure.. why not. So here we are. The albums of the modern list.

Mick: hah. No sh*t man. As I told the committee. I'm no dummy, nor a classic elitist but many of these I've never heard. A lot I have never heard OF. This list even more so than the classic was a labor of love of the comittee which various specialists weighing in and helping craft the list. This one I will be as much a spectator as everyone else as I will be exploring these and hearing many for the first time as I weigh my own votes. For that reason, I think I am more excited for the modern contest than I am for the classic one.
PS: it looks great Micky. Well we are out of time for the moment. Will you be around later for a more in depth look at the first batch of polls today.
Mick: yeah sure. My ass is likely planted in this bar stool.. at least until I fall out of it.

We have just gotten word that the brackets for the Modern Album contest have been released.. a whole day early. It is pandemonium out there in proggy land. PS: We are back. Live in studio and lets go back to the Piazza di Prog and to our beat reporter Stu Nahan. Stu.. Stu... are you there?
Stu: yeah Mort. I'm here. This is Stu Nahan reporting live, poolside at the Piazza di Prog.
PS: Things are lookin kind of rough
out there this evening.
Stu: Yes, it is like a scene out of Caligua or even Saturday night around the pool at Progday here at the Piazza but I've managed to stay on the air. Let's see if I can find Micky for his thoughts on today. There he is. Hey Mick!
Micky: what's up man! whoo..
Stu: so you were quite busy today it seems...
Micky: Well, I'll tell you Stu, I did try to offend some prissy prog fans..! But you
know, just like I told the guy on ABC, "Danger is my business!"
Stu: You know, a lot of people expected maybe Genesis or Camel would take the tournament honors this year.
Micky: [laughs incredulously]
Those groups suck!
Stu: That's fantastic! Let me ask you a question. When you get out there, do you ever fear for your life?
Micky: Well Stu I'll tell you, prog is not music, it's a way of life, it's
no hobby. It's a way of looking at that album and saying, "Hey bud, let's
party!"
Stu: Let me ask you a question. What's next for Mad Micky?
Micky: Heading over to the Modern band polls, and then me
and Raff are going to wing on over to London and jam with Radiohead! And you guys are invited to
Stu: I think this is a good time for a commericial break

Really crappy album selection. Seriously. Some bands have their best album in the poll while others have perhaps their 10th best. Sorry Mick, this one is f*ckingly skewed. I voted on a few, got the general gist and will ignore it henceforth. Too bad, it could have been a lot fairer.

fair? Nah.. who cares about that. Tull fan doesn't need this to know TAAB will get to the last rounds, nor Yes fan with CTTE, nor KC fan with Red, nor Genesis fan with any Gabriel release.
we have a 1000 polls for those. I didn't care about fair, this never was 'top' PA's album. We have nice chart on the front page for that brother. I was looking not for fair.. but fun. Of course it is skewed..

yeah... we could have gone a step further than we did and gone with 2nd or 3rd best from some of the 2nd tier bands to level the field even more but as I noted above. Really.. it isn't like I could remove ALL the hugely popular albums Doing the big heavies as I call them did enough to keep the emphasis on the two main points I wanted to stress..a) have fun damnit and b) giving great but lesser acclaimed albums some light and perhaps expose to those that haven't heard them.
As I noted in the collab zone, I really had zero interest to spend the months these contests will take, of my time, just to end up with yet another CTTE v. Foxtrot v. Red v. TAAB series of polls at the end. Yawn.

Some people "have fun" pouring gasoline on vagrants and then setting them ablaze; your definition of "fun" is not universal.

Was wondering what I should do for fun after these polls. Thanks for the suggestion.

BREAKING NEWS!! - We take you straight to the Piazza di Prog and Stu Nahan who is sitting around the pool with the Big Mick. Stu.. Stu.. are you there?
Stu: Yes I am here and with Mick who has an announcement regarding the ongoing contests!
Mick: Yeah, just in case people missed it, though it would be hard to miss. We did get a great suggestion from one of the Fipa executive board members during a liquid lunch session and we decided to immediately implement it. A fundemental flaw in the way the brackets were set up would have made 2nd round matches, in many cases, merely repeats of 1st round matches. The need to change it was immediately recognized and approved by the executive committee. However we were unsure whether it was best to implement the changes to contests ongoing on to start them next weekend when the modern brackets get started. However a comment made in one of the threads about choosing between the two leading vote getters sort of made it clear that in many cases 2nd matches would merely be repeats of 1st round encounters so we decided to implement a different system seeding the brackets for the 2nd round. Simply the winner of odd round matches face the 2nd place finishers of the adjoining polls (winner poll #1 v. 2nd place poll #2 and 2nd place poll #1 v. winner poll 2). We think it will make for more interesting and fun 2nd round matches.
Stu: sound good. So what do you think of the result so far.
Mick: well lets see. Doing some analysis here. The interesting aspect when looking at the results fsor far is looking at how many are potentially holding their votes given the intersting 1st round poll structure where early voting can be punished. Most band polls had around 50 to 70 votes. So how many votes may still be out there. Let's see where our results are at this point.
poll #1 - 46 votes Eros - Dun -> 18 Aja - Steey Dan -> 16
poll #2 - 42 votes Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquième Saison - Harmonium -> 17 votes Bitches Brew (1969) - Miles Davis -> 13 votes
poll #3 - 48 votes Ommadawn (1975) - Mike Oldfield -> 21 votes ...And Then There Were Three (1978) - Genesis -> 14 votes
Mick: well it should be no surprise but the Italians are doing well and look to have some potential favorable matchups in the 2nd. The funny thing was we noticed the real strength of the Italians was in the bottom of the bracket. Could be a great tournament for them. Likely only one of the nearly 15 albums will not make the 2nd round, and many well go further.
PS: anything else.
Mick: Oh yeah. Look at those vote totals. You can see where people are laying low. Disregarding the polls with Italians the ones with well known anglo groups are up there in vote totals. I think there are fair number hanging back in several. Should be a interesting final couple of days. Well Stu.. time to get going. Thanks to Progspin, M@X..
PS: who is M@X btw.
Micky: some Dream Theater fan.. 'nuff said.. anyhow.. thanks to everyone for making this a hit and helluva lot of fun. We've already drawn out some long time friends that hadn't been around the forums in some time, let's hope to get more of them back, if only for a few months.

Progspin - Prog News without taste, flavor, access, knowledge or any semblance of discretion.
Good morning progfans. The first batch of polls in the PA's Battle of the Albums tournament are due to close in the next hour. A friendly reminder. In these first round contests the top 2 advance to the 2nd round. Ties for first place will be broken using a secret (until needed haha) formula, ties for 2nd place will be settled using a vote off. A quick draw contest at high noon on main street. A new poll will be started. First album to 5 votes wins...
We talked to the Big Mick earlier this morning and he said he'd drop by the studio and give his thoughts as the polls close and announce final results here on Progspin. Stay tuned!!!

Very exciting One thing that has bothered me though, maybe it's not necessary to add 'Prog Archives' in every poll title, so that we might be able to see which poll it is from the forum home?

no.. and that is the problem. I just don't adore it.. is is a good album but never have been a KC 'fan' per se. I definitely like it more than the vastly over-appreciated (and yes.. overrated Wetton era) but I really do like Mirage. It does rock.. and at the heart of my tastes.. I do love to rock out.

I'm looking forward to the modern polls. I don't think there is a single PAer who knows/owns all 128 albums. Everyone is going to be exposed to lots of (to them) new music.

Colosseum- Valentyne Suite wins the quick draw tiebreak... and will face Rush - Farewell to Kings in the 2nd round.
Btw.... I have seen the future and it is Wegmans which opened a new store here in northern Va. with a first in kind... with its own bar within a grocery store.... now Raff doesn't have to pull my leg to get to go with her to the store.

amen brother Daryl... I'd give an extra bonus vote per poll to anyone who had 2/3's of those albums.
I don't think anyone claimed to even have all of the top 50 of the recent RS list. I think Raff told me how many we had of the moderns, and even with all the promos she has got from labels and the artists it was still embarssingly low. This contest for me is the real excitement... not in who wins and loses... though I do have some passionate favorites.. but more in line of discovering albums which I (or even both Raff and I) have missed.

really? Really Ian? It isn't like they created the wheel or improved upon it.. and need to be placed upon a Beatlesque platform. Those albums are seemingly beloved and highly appreciated by the vast majority of the overall audience. The only voices of dissension are from militant free thinkers and from the lunatic fringe of those the prog world.
