Subject: Is Camel a metal band?
Date Posted: May 04 2015 at 11:34
I went to the local metal music shop here in Vancouver and saw much of what one would expect; everything from old school Iron maiden, Black Sabbath, Burzum, Cinderella and pretty much all metal subgenres including a lot of prog metal. I picked up TesseracT's Altered State, Pain of Salvation's Linoleum, and Riverside's Rapid Eye Movement. The store manager was playing something from Kamelot, I'm not sure which recording, that sounded pretty good as well.
The strange part of this store was the presence of nonmetal prog, some hidden, some not. The Jethro Tull Box set placed in a high visibility spot and bands such as Marillion, Transatlantic and Camel mixed in with the metal, nevermind the advertisement for the Magma show last month. I'm not complaining, as there are few independent music stores that sell CDs I like, but kind of odd!
------------- More heavy prog, please!

Years ago, at the Virgin Megastore in Paris, I found both Transatlantic and Spock's Beard in the Metal section, so I wouldn't be too surprised if also Camel found their way there...

Ha ha. So I'm not alone. I forgot that I also saw Spock's Beard in there. This is an independent store though, so I can only assume the inclusion was intentional rather than ignorance, which I can see more likely in a megastore.
------------- More heavy prog, please!

It hasn't changed. I still find my prog in Paris in Death Metal boxes.

If it's not jazz, classical, or pop hits, it's metal. Too many categories can be oh so confusing.

We have a local chain down here in Australia called JB Hifi, and although their prog pickings are few and far between, TWICE I've come across Renaissance under heavy metal!
Mind you, I've also found Magenta, Kaipa and Mostly Autumn there as well!
The `Metal' section is really just a dumping ground for prog artists that don't include the big bands like Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, etc, which are always under `Popular'
One good thing that comes from this - generally all these prog albums sit untouched for months in the metal section, Joe Average has no idea what the albums are, so eventually they're marked down to a fraction of their original price, and I'm more than happy to snap them up, either for my own collection, or to pass on as gifts to friends.

I've seen Pink Floyd at the metal store near me, but other then that the rest is all hard rock or obviously metal. Some would argue that King Crimson shouldn't be in there, because I've seen that, but King Crimson certainly had their heavier albums that lean towards hard rock.

My record store has a pretty large prog/krautrock section. Curiously they put Yes, ELP, pink floyd, Mike oldfield and a few other big name bands in the 'classic rock' section, but Genesis and Camel still get to sit in the prog section. I'm not sure if there is a method to the madness
Posted By: Pastmaster
Date Posted: May 04 2015 at 13:23
^I think the reasoning for that is you will hear bands like Yes and Pink Floyd on classic rock radio stations. A band can be classic rock and progressive rock at the same time.

The bad thing is that if this albums don't sell because they are in the wrong section, it will be less likely that the store managers will pay attention to keep on getting such bands... or more likely, if they are already put on discount, then they should be paying attention so they won't stock them again.

My local independent store has has Anekdoten and Circulus in the metal section.
Camel is probably stranger though.
My favorite unusual categorization though is Merzbow in the rock/pop section.

Of course the more mainstream metal bands are in the pop/rock section, so.....
I'm just grateful they have prog there; I don't much care what section!

Progressive Metal (and especially Symphonic Metal) and Symphonic Rock are on many things the nearest sub-genres of Prog, so it is not surprising that the shelves of the stores are mixed with Prog / Symph Metal and Symphonic Rock albums. I've seen that "phenomenon" even here in Belgrade at a local record store called "Pinball Wizard".

In the store in front of my home, artists are just in alphabetical order. The only separate sections are for Classical and Jazz. But the owner was bassist in a Genesis cover band.

I can understand the mistake if the albums in question were obtained via InsideOut, or one of the other distributors out there whose bread and butter is metal but who have a fine sideline in prog, but it's daft otherwise. (Particularly if the packaging has "FILE UNDER PROGRESSIVE ROCK" on it and they shove it in metal anyway, as I've seen from time to time).
Then again, if there's a decent crossover between metal fans and prog fans, it may be that the prog albums actually sell better in the metal section than in the general rock section. There might actually be method to the madness!

Exactly the same here. I got Spock's Beard and Motorpsycho CD's recently from the Metal section.

The "Cookie monster vocals" joke is a bit old now, don't you think?
Anyway, I can't add a lot to all that had been said: in the French record store Gibert Joseph in Paris, the metal section is close to the progressive section. Furthermore, in France, progressive rock is still covered either by small magazines which are on the verge of being called "prozines", or covered by metal magazines.
So, while the example given by the original poster is a bit farfetched (I would have supposed that the store owners would have put Camel in the pop/rock section just by looking at the years of release of each album), I'm not that surprised.

I believe the first two Spock's Beard albums were originally on the Metal Blade label, so that probably lumped them into the metal category.
I also wonder if sometimes album cover art (dragons = metal ) leads to wrong categorization. (Alternate US cover shown:)

Jokingly, yes - the track 'Ice' (off I Can See Your House From Here') is pure Thrash, bordering on Black Metal, never heard anything as break-neck as that Seriously, in some cases, bands like Spock's Beard, Marillion and The Flower Kings, get lumped in the 'Metal' section of many music shops - I've seen it - I can't explain why this is.

I wouldn't really consider Hendrix to be metal, just because he plays a hard and mean guitar. Born To Be Wild (June 1968) might be it or Helter Skelter (September 1968) or even Sabbath's first song August 1968) if people don't believe that those two songs really were.

Most certainly. They play so fast so our brains can't process and it feels like slow and relaxing music. Ever saw a helicopter? It's the same thing, really.

I've moved this thread to just for fun.

Hey, but who needs drums?
If you haven't heard these two, do so. Fabulous. I saw them one night on Public TV, and went out and bought 3 CDs the next day.
P.S. And just to stay on topic, no, Camel is not a metal band.
[/QUOTE] One of my top ten bands for sure. 11:11 is one of the only albums I have without any flaws.

Perhaps they are more of a Heavy Mental band.

Well, dead Camel or death Camel - regardless of that, I saw them play live at Night of the Prog this weekend. Certainly not metal, and not a massive stage show, but hearing flawless renditions of Ice and Lady Fantasy certainly made my evening.

Haven't seen them lately, but I saw Camel live several times and they struck me as one of the best live bands I ever saw.
