Only one album per band, due to the lack of space

I know Jesus Christ Superstar isn't in the archives, but it's so prog I thought it would be relevant

Sorry if your fave band isnt there, I would've included a few more if I had space

My favourites concept albums by band...

The Lambs - Genesis

The Wall - Pink Floyd

Tales from topographic oceans - Yes

Three Friends - Gentle Giant

Still Life - Van Der Graaf Generator (I don't know if it's a concept but, the songs are very related)

Thick as a brick - Jethro Tull

The pros and cons of hitch hiking - Roger Waters

The man who sold the world - David Bowie (I know that's not prog but, OH MEN, That's ROCK!)

The songs are very related indeed. I like to sum up the album like this:
1. Pilgrims - Life is a pilgrimage.
2. Still Life - But eternal life would be unbearable.
3. La Rossa  - So we must live for the moment.
4. My Room - All hopes and expectations will finally be disappointed though.
5. Childlike Faith in Childhood's End - But perhaps there is a goal in the very distant future for which it is worth living.

That's a tough one, as there are so many great albums in the list. Anyway, I voted for The Wall, which I was so lucky as to see performed live in 1980. Even though it's undeniably depressing, it's still a fantastic combination of lyrical prowess and excellent music. Next to it I would mention The Lamb..., Operation Mindcrime, Thick as a Brick and Frances the Mute.

Tough one - I went for The Snow Goose, just ahead of Lamb and TFTO.

Posted By: BaldJean

a few other ones that could be named:

The Residents - Eskimo
The Residents - The Mole Trilogy (a trilogy of three albums)
Gong - The Radio Gnome trilogy ("Flying Teapot", "Angel's Egg" and "You", a trilogy of 3 albums)
Mother Gong - Fairy Tales
Mother Gong - Robot Woman 1-3 (another trilogy of albums)
Grobschnitt - Rockpommels Land
John Greaves & Peter Blegvad - Kew / Rhone (a strange dadaistic concept album)
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage 1-3 (another trilogy)
Dave Greenslade - Pentateuch
Patrick Moraz - The Story of "I"

No "2112"?!  I'd have to go with that or possibly "Tarkus" (although "Pictures" is definately a terrific album!).

Posted By: The Miracle

^2112 is only one side of the album. Its not a concept album, its an epic song. Same with Tarkus

I chose "Pictures at an Exhibiotion", as it did great impression on me at my teens, and I still like to listen through it from time to time. "666" and "Lamb lies down..." are also good, but I find more boring parts from them, than I do from the ELP album.

There's many albums included in this poll, thath I haven't heard though.

Hmm, just goes to show ... here I am a prog fan ... and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar takes it for me ... it really is an awesome album (I'm talking about the original soundtrack with Ian Gillan as Jesus) with a lot of creative musicians participating ... one of my favourites ever ... even beating out 5 star classics like Thick As A Brick and Six Wives ...

Thick As A Brick!!!!

Claimed by the Tramp himself as the Mother of All Concept albums.

Funny (even hilarious at times) , thought-provoking , awesome, faultlessly executed, severely attacking the establishment ...... it's got everything, a man can wish for . The superb St Cleves chronicle is also a gas , all the way down to the wanted adds! But you might need the vinyl for that!

Too bad he did not see the light of it as he did A Passion Play!

As for rock operas, I love the broaway musical Haïr. Which came out as a superb film adaptation and the music transformed with a funky bass.

Seems I am the first one to vote for 666...

I think Tommy or Quadrophenia should have been here, too (like Jesus Christ Superstar, not that I would vote for them!!)

and War of the Worlds is forgotten!!! Considering the storm around the new movie, it's great negligence!

-------------
Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

I'd like to see a "none" option.

I know it sounds weird, but I dislike concept albums. I love epics, but I think all concept albums are contrived.

Tough list, but I went with Lambs. It has so many different pieces and a great story line. It did have a lot of influence on my early years. Other opions, Dead Winter Dead should have been on the over Streets for a Savatage choice. I thinks it a much more powerfull story and better music. I also would choose A Passion Play over Brick. I like the melody and the imagery(?) better. This whole list is great though. You can't lose with any of them.

Too tough, because some of them on the list are part of my life. I don't want to say what I voted, it's top secret. My favourite prog rock concept album "The Lamb Lies Down..." will surely win this poll, so I voted something else.

Hey, I think the best one is " The Human equation". Ayreon is one of the best composers in prog

I love Albums like "The War of the worlds" By Jeff Wayne, and the to masterpiceses "The Human Equation" and "Into the electric Castle" By Ayreon (aka. Arjen A. Luccassen)

does anyone Know any similar albums to the ones above, i like that the album is like watching a movie or reading a book, you can both hear and see that there are put a lot of hard work an time into it.

so if you know any groups or albums similar to them, them please Let me know

Thank you.

Snow Goose. No contest.

But of those not listed, Horslips' "The Tain" and "The Book of Invasions" are also mightily brilliant. For those who like hard rocking Celtic prog (NOT Folk)  mixed with a chunk of Irish mythology, this band is peerless. I'm amazed so few have heard of them. They were legends in the 70s in Ireland, Germany and the US and they've just reformed on an ad hoc basis.

TFTO is genious.

Pain of Salvation's BE, easily. Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick a close second.

And yeah, this poll is missing Pink Floyd's Animals.

And what's the concept/story of Lamb? Other than the music, it isn't very interesting to me. Perhaps I'm missing something? Is there actual meaning behind it like BE, TAAB and Animals?

Of the List Peter Hammill's "The Fall of the House of Usher", which is no surprise, since it is my favourite prog album of all times (the 1999 version). Other albums that should be on the list, but are unfortunately (and undeservedly) little known are Mother Gong's "Fairy Tales" and Nik Turner's Sphynx's "Xitintoday". The latter is a very rare gem which only exists on vinyl; the CD of the same name is a completely different album (only the lyrics are the same).

I would like to have voted for Ayreon: Into the Electric Castle but there's only The Human Equation here which I don't like THAT much. So I voted for TFTO. I can't stand "the Wall" especially because of that brick song which destroys all my appetite for PF again and again. (I love PF but HATE THAT song) and the Genesis equivalent (TLLDOB) is not my fav. Genesis album (by far). I really can't say I know all the others.Second would be TAAB and third I'd vote for Misplaced Childhood.
