My friend Paul swears that the seventies Irish prog rock band Horslips inspired the look of the band from the movie Spinal Tap. (Paul got hit in the head with a rocket in Vietnam, so I give him a lot of slack.)
So, is he right?

Inspiration is a tough nut to crack.  But I would have to guess No.  Something more in the hard rock/metal vein, more probably - and they had a similar look too.  I do see a bit of resemblance with Horslips, but I'm thinking it's a coincidence.

The two guys on the left could definitely be in a Spinal Tap tribute band.
But I agree with HolyMoly that it's a coincidence.
Didn't your buddy learn in basic training to keep his head down?  I did.

I actually have The Tain, Dancehall Sweethearts and The Book Of Invasions.
US releases on original vinyl.

Charles O'Connor (2nd left in the photo above) definitely has something of the Derek Smalls about him. The Horslips retrospective DVD shows some of the amazing glam rock outfits they wore in the 70s but I wouldn't have thought they were well known enough in the US to have heavily inspired Spinal Tap, who were a composite of loads of bands. The guitarist seemed to be modelled on Jeff Beck and some of the others were played by genuine musicians like Ric Parnell ex-Atomic Rooster as one of the ill-fated drummers and Rare Bird's David Kaffinetti on keyboards.

No.  Read an interview once where the guys said they based a lot of the look on Saxon Wink
