From the mighty Symphonic Conference we have a band that sleepwalked their way past the Moodies in the 1st round.
From England
GENESIS!!!
From the Eclectic Conference we have the winner of a 1st round match with Anekdoten
From England
VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR!!!!
Vegas has installed Genesis as a 10 vote favorite. Can VDGG pull the upset. Yes they can, but will they? We shall see

On vocals alone I'd pick Genesis. That I prefer their compositions as well is secondary.

For me not an easy call, both are on my play rotation pretty evenly. I've listened to Genesis since the dawn of time - that would be for the past 40 years. VDGG is a much more recent discovery. I guess I'll go Genesis as they have been an old friend for a long time...

Not everything VDGG did clicked with me.. but that Genesis clip is one of the VERY few things they did that did click with me.

that is the part of this I think has worked well... this is now... rather than both of these bands destroying 'lesser' bands ..meanwhile those two lesser bands are off fighting each other. Besides these two really only faced each other a round earlier than they would have under normal seeding. VDGG would have been a 3 or 4 seed and facing one of the big heavies (1's or 2's) in the sweet 16, just a round later than they are now.

Well, it's a question of when the Genesis fanboys turn up. This band can push Yes all the way and trounce Beatles on this forum. Don't think VDGG can hold out long enough, but it'll be interesting. By the way, voted Genesis.

I love both bands, but I'm going with the crowd. I hate to vote against the Van Damme classic Pawn Hearts, but then again I'd feel equally bad voting against an act who churned out The Lamb.
I have a sneaking suspicion that this tournament will end up with a Genesis - Floyd shoot out.....and I'm pretty sure that'll turn out in Pinky's favour.

Genesis, by all logic, should be a band I love, yet I don't. This makes it impossible for me to understand how they have such a large and devoted fanboy following. It's decent music overlapped by absolutely awful singing from a guy who's usually dressed like a fool. Don't get me wrong, I love unique voices that make other people cringe (Peter Hammill, for example) but something about Peter Gabriel grinds my eardrums into the pavement. And as much as I dislike Genesis and will never understand them I love VDGG and was really hoping they'd have a chance in this poll.

My qualms with Genesis have no end - I have listened to SEBTP 20+ times, Foxtrot 10+ times, Nursery Cryme 10+ times, and The Lamb around 5 times. I simply cannot find a shade of brilliance among it.

Though you are one up on me. SEBTP connected with me upon the first listen. It does have the two songs I adore most from Genesis. The one time they really unleashed Hacket and the ONLY time in the history of Genesis that Tony Banks did something interesting.. more than interesting.. simply stunning actually. However that was the only one, the only album I'd put they did on par with the multiple greats that all the other greats did do, they had some good individual album tracks IMO, but overall the albums ... very weak. A lot of simply boring stuff mixed with some occasional neat stuff.

ohh.. putting me on the spot. That is hard to answer, for I have SO many for all the different moods and emotions i go through on a daily basis
As far as favorites.
I am an unabashed ELP fan. I do love heavy aggressive music as well as the contrasts they had with the silly and simply beautiful.
I am a huge fan of the Italian stuff. Particularly Osanna. That my friends is some seriously intense sh*t. From the little you just said.. you need to get your hands on Palepoli if you don't have it yet. You'd eat that album with both hands and come back fpr more and want from the other albums. That album though, I put in the top 5 of greatest prog albums EVER done. Read the reviews of the album via the site. It is an album that connects in the heart.. and especially the balls.
In the same vein I'm a huge Amon Duul II fan... lot of fire and spirit and trippiness. Not a bad album for the length of their classic years. Yet you still see a neat progression in their style as they went along.
On the flip side. I do like more experimental or mood music that fits my more introspective moods.
I am a huge.. HUGE Franco Battiatio fan. There was never a more stiring or beautifully hypnotic album that I have heard than Sulle Corde di Ariea. Turn off the lights, put on the headphones, smoke a J or drink a glass of wine.. and just be taken away ... wow.
Many others I suppose ... thanks for asking though. Yourself??

Actually, Mostly I agree with your points on Genesis... however, those individual album tracks are more than enough to make me like the band and not be in an anti-Genesis club. Now, I don't know if we agree on the songs that make you like the band and which ones dislike them, but indeed for me there's no whole album from the band I love from beginning to end (not even Selling England, even though it's the closest one, but Battle of Epping Forest just ruins it for me). However, I'm afraid that's the very same problem I have with your beloved ELP, there's just no album in which I really love every song they released.

Interesting you mention SEBTP, as I've listened to it a few times and still don't remember a thing about it. Foxtrot, we're getting there. The only Genesis album I can say has been memorable for me is TLLDoB, which, ironically, is the one that gets the most flack for being boring.

I'm part of the anti-anti-Genesis club, we shame those who shame Genesis!!
Genesis is one of the few BIGGIES that, well... I LOVE their 80's output!! Invisible Touch (the album, not the song itself ) I love. The Brazilian is classic. Duke is strong, but not as powerful as ...AttwT...
If this were a Peter Gabriel vs. Hammill, this result would be different (due to their solo output), but since it's not, GENESIS UPVOTE!!

My three stars rating made SEBTP fall from the first place in the home page's top 100. Can I be admitted in the club?

I would assume the answer is most certainly yes. I'm glad to see that you are an aficionado of Avant-Garde music.

Ha! Well, I actually do like quite a bit of Genesis tracks - I just find them generally underwhelming compared to, well, most any other prog band. I want you to know, I just added a Genesis track to the playlist on the 8th. Just for you, HT.

all now we need is to have a Homer Simpson falling asleep to Genesis youtube clip and my life will be complete....
or that American Psycho clip where Christian Bale extolls the greatness of the ... great Genesis.. pop Genesis. Not sure a clip exists without ..umm.. all the other stuff going on while engaged in his monologue haha
Hell yeah. Crazy people rule. Only bound by .. well nothing.. and definitely not slaves to the herd mentality Pop Genesis ruled and sure as hell wasn't boring. At least Genesis did finally recognize where their true talents were.. and guess what.. they suddenly gained an audience and became known to people outside of a handful of musicians, a couple of Italians, and their own family members

Don't take that clip as agreement with your opinion. Genesis still gets me going and my son is now a huge fan. But I can also take a joke. I laughed out loud at the episode of the Young Ones when i first saw it back in the '80s.

Now this is where we disagree! I kind of like PG era Genesis, but man - Phil Collins voice makes me break out in hives. *shivers*

Weird, because Gabriel and Collins are practically twins - or triplets, rather, 'cause Fish.

bah...
now this is what Genesis is.. take all that artsy fartsie too clever by half crap...we want REAL Genesis
that tops 99% of what prog Genesis did. Great pop music trumps (unintential) sleepy-time prog any day of the week!

No secret that I am a member of this club, and I'm with the mickster - I find SEBTP to be an outstanding album, but it's the only one I could get into in any meaningful way.

back at you Rick.. have a great (and safe!) New Year. Remember.. first two rounds are on me at Roxy and Dukes if you can make it up to N.J. in October!!! The hurricane punch there hits you like... yes.. a hurricane!! Also they have some great eateries there, there is a Peruvian place that the food is to DIE for, we go there every time we go up to the NJ Proghouse.

I will definitely try!! 2014 was a good year, I made it through to see 2015. 2015 will be good if I make it through to see 2016.
I do hope you can make it.
