At home. My music has no portability at the moment. Not so much as a portable CD player! God knows how I'll survive 7 hours on the train next week...

On my Pod I have an assortment of prog playlists, including prog with an edge (King Crimson, Anglagard, Van Der graaf etc.) which i listen to while working out, as well as a list of sleepy time prog (Olias of Sunhillow, White Willow, Selling England etc.) which, obviously i listen to late at night. Progressive rock as art rock is able to "paint" so many moods as to run the gammit? of human emotion. Different prog for different moods. Different moods at different times.

At home, in my bedroom.

Sometimes I used a Walkman, but my ears were with "noises" (zzz!) after using the headphones. I also felt like I was losing some hearing capacity, so I never used it again. I always used the Walkman at low volume, but my ears became sensitive. Since I don`t use the Walkman, my ears are better.

There are times when I just love to chill out in the lounge room (big speakers) and relax with my fav stuff. (Porcupine Tree are such an awesome band to chill out and relax to)

Other times there is nothing better than sharing some tunes with someone with a similar interest.
I've also got another room with a stack of MP3s on computer which I've rigged up a surround sound setup and thats good for when I've got some samples I want to check out or when the house is full and I just want to go to the 'den'.

I occasionally get the opportunity to play some tunes to my classes at school so there are some high school kids here that have heard Yes, PT and DT etc, that would never have otherwise heard of them. Some of them really dig the music to.

In the living room, usually during holydays or with my Ipod while I´m on the tube.

I also listen to prog in my car during weekends

I’m a night owl so I listen to prog mostly at night on the computer - speakers are a no-no because the neighbours are rather old and grouchy.

Last month, at a deserted campground, I pumped up the volume one night and played Arena’s almost entire repertoire. Man, that was fun  !!!

What is the plural of Walkman?  Is it Walkmen or Walkmans?  As in, "Yeah, I bought two Walkmen yesterday?"  Or, "Which of these two Walkmans do you prefer?"

Just a thought.

In my room while falling asleep/ doing my work/ writing poetry or a story or ideas for a story.

If I'm at my boyfriend's house....pretty much all the time. Not that I've been there for a while- grrrrr, Too BUSY!

Occassionally at one of my friend's houses, I dunno...would you define Led Zeppelin as prog? It's a debatable topic.

Sometimes at University on my boyfriend's best friend's little watch/mp3-playing gadget thingy. (pratty damn nifty- I know.)

Mostly these days on i-pod - what a life-changing device. Thousands of songs, endless playlists, a big prog mayhem one of a few hundred tunes. It's radio with the world's best DJ - me!

The pod goes in the car and soundtracks me wherever I go too.

If I'm at home working, then it's i-tunes on the pc. on the road it's the pod and i-tunes on my powerbook with a set of noise cancelling headphones.

At home relaxing it's finally on the good system, a lot of vinyl and CDs and if I'm feeling particularly lazy the i-pod gets plugged into that too.

Maybe you can get a job taking one of those summer school camps in the USA.
or...what about busking??...or write a script and send it to Tim Brooke Taylor or Bill Oddie.
I remember, quite a few years ago, having a weekend job selling danish pastries at the market in Portebello Road in London. The US tourists loved the pecan pies we used to sell them.

Although I don't work for Apple either, their products have certainly become
central to my music experience. Seems that even the villains have taste these
days - recently I lost two laptops and a maxed-out iPod in a break-in. No
Windows stuff touched! Now I have just an iPod Shuffle for the gym.

Love listening to prog while surfing this site ... and on weekends when I can
power up my big speakers ... and in the car on these cold winters days. I find
that good prog keeps me vibed and very focussed on the driving.

I know exactly how that is, but IMO I think it's better to be broke with endless time at home to spend listening to music during the summer, then to work all day, be miserable, and have only a couple of hours to listen to music only to fall asleep to it because your work schedual is so tite and the only free time you have is for sleeping.

Any album will do, because Progressive Rock is just that erotic. Though if you're looking for a good time try The Mars Volta's Frances The Mute. It seems the ladies just can't get enough of this man's very high and loud voice. You tell me?

I heard about an article in some random Australian music magazine OK Computer by Radiohead is the most listened to album in Australia while making love. Weird.

I'm not, no...

If you're actually interested then my many habits include:

  • Prog (obviously)
  • A rabid comedy obsession which keeps me chained to the TV schedules and the DVD news sites,
  • Writing, acting and so on
  • Collecting books by P G Wodehouse
  • Drawing and if I feel up to it painting
  • Talking loudly at people about things they're much less bothered about than I am
  • Spending far more time than is necessarily healthy with my aforementioned girlfriend
  • Collecting objects that interest me and later get used in improvisations. The other week I bought a brass hunting horn that in all probability I couldn't afford and most certainly didn't need.
  • Other things.
So yes... I'm a normal, healthy teenager. Oh yes I am...

Trous, I don't know any teenagers that collect P G Wodehouse. You are one of a kind.

All teenagers however should listen to prog, have a healthy interest in comedy, act, write, draw and paint while talking loudly to people as well as have a brass hunting horn and spend plenty of time with their girlfriends (in the country).

It keeps them from pestering their parents for money and provides protection from attacks from rabid foxes.

By the way, what is a 'necessarily' healthy time to spend with a girlfriend??

I'm not sure, but most people seem to think me n' the lass are a little excessive in the amount of time we have to spend in contact with one another (usually most nights from 6/7ish through to the small hours of the morning). But I think it's probably to do with being several hundred miles apart. Other means of communication take on a little more importance, I suppose.

In the car, and at the computer mostly

Car - Everyday on the way to and from work

Work - Occasionally play a CD & listen to headphones on my PC

Home - At the computer if it's late at night. I usually exercise after work - I put a CD on and crank it loud enough for the whole house... that's my favorite! (Some success at getting my wife into Porcupine Tree, Rush and Shadow Gallery so far! )

If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud!

usually on the 'puter (cygnus, don't be dirty) or in the car. i like to have music as background music. i don't like just sitting somewhere and listening to music that much.

On the tram on my way to and from work, and generally whenever my wife is not around.

Anyone else out there have the complication that occurs when your other half has a problem with your love of prog?

ah by the sound of it you're in Melbourne! Welcome to the Archives from a fellow Oz (Adelaide)  ... well originally a Pom but that can't be helped - just don't mention the cricket eh?

Yeah, my hubby is a reluctant prog listener ... headphones work best (he wears them to block out the sound ) ... however, he did come with me to see Yes in Melb. 2 yrs ago  ... so its gradually sinking in ... oh, and he says he cant listen to Kasey Chambers anymore - a small victory methinks!

At car and at home. Sometimes I use my portable cd-player while walking outside.

I don't carry any of that to the parties anymore, as I'm not invited.

At work I listen to various prog stations on live365.com.  Although today I will be listening to England win the test match today in Manchester  (if not I will be  ).

I've downloaded loads of tracks from this site to my mp3 thingy and am working my way through them. The most played track is currently Paranoid Android by Radiohead, which amazes me as I thought I didn't like Radiohead!

Well done on the Kasey Chambers victory!!!  That is something I don't have to deal with at least. More than happy to mention the cricket after last nights effort!!!

At home, as I don't drive and don't usually carry my Walkman around - not being able to hear properly could be a life hazard in the traffic of my home town! I listen to music (prog and otherwise) when I do the housework or when I'm sitting down in my living room doing something else I enjoy very much - stitching. I know the combination sounds a bit unlikely, but I'm capable of stitching nice, flowery pictures while listening to King Crimson or even Metallica or Black Sabbath!

BTW, Tangerine62: fortunately not all women are interested in 3-minute, unchallenging pop songs! I hate that kind of crap and always have, but I agree that it's difficult to find a woman who loves music you actually have to listen to.

Either 1: travelling (Fortunately the Walkman makes this very easy - I used to bus an hour and a half daily. Now it's two hours, even worse!), or

2: late at night, on the computer doing computer-y things. For obvious reasons it's headphones.  or ...

3: the RARE times when everyone has, as chance would have it, left the house to go run errands and I am free to use the record player (because in my house nobody seems to like listening to music unless there's a visual provided) or

4: studying. Again, headphones, but this is actually pretty fun because when I let the music flow to the mental back-burner while busying self with horrible things like multivariable calculus , I swear I appreciate it on a whole new level. Have I told any of you how Yes helps boost your math mark?  It's funny but I'm serious.

BTW, comments such as that from Tangerine62 kinda tick me off, I must admit.  Even though I know that's just your opinion and is a reflection of your personal experience.

At home when I get in from work everyday.

In the mornings, on my walkman, walking to work.

A good three hour music session every Saturday & Sunday morning; sets me up for the day and puts me in a good mood for any 'non working day'
