Subject: Biggest Transition Between 2 Albums

What are the biggest transitions a band has made from one album to the next? Try and keep it so most of the members have stayed the same/there isn't a long gap or hiatus the band took (e.g. King Crimson's Red to Discipline). A couple of my favourites:

Genesis: From Genesis To Revelation - Trespass
Harmonium: s/t - Si On Avait...
The Moody Blues - The Magnificent Moodies - Days Of Future Passed
Mike Oldfield - Earth Moving - Amarok

As always, thanks for any feedback Big smile

Nice topic. Here's a few...

Il Balletto Di Bronzo - Sirio 2222 To Ys.
Cosmos Factory - Black Hole To Metal Reflection
Here & Now - Give & Take To Fantasy Shift
Il Rovescio Della Medaglia - La Bibbia To Contaminazione
Jumbo - Vietato Ai Minori Di 18 Anni To Violini D'autunno
Mansun - Attack Of The Grey Lantern To Six
Radiohead - Ok Computer To Kid A
Yes - Drama To 90125

Ulver's done that with just about every album.  Some of the transitions were somewhat gradual but a few of them were complete 180s (like, as in Black Metal to Acoustic Folk to Electronica to Post Rock).   It makes them interesting to follow, but it's a little creepy too.

Yep stop the search, Doug found the winner in Dedalus. Wow...talk about taking the road less travelled. I made an indecipherable review of it a good while back and I still stand by my words.

I like both. Coffins is easier to swallow and catchier, but Hubardo has much more depth and can be more rewarding.

I thought of another one that belongs among the most perplexing of u-turns: Franco Battiato: L'Egitto prima delle Sabie - L'era del cinghiale bianco.
The difference in sound here is hard to convey in words. The shift is so strange that you begin to question whether it indeed is the same artist in charge of both. From the most extreme minimalism with 'delle Sabie's' one-note scale piano experiments to the gorgeously produced art pop of 'cinghiale bianco'. We may have a winner here.
For proof?

Yes actually, both albums are excellent. From wind instrument led avant-guard black metal to a King Crimson esq take on 80's goth rock.

How about Coyote to Gamma Knife, also from KD.

Jethro Tull:
"This Was" to "Stand Up"
then
"Too Old to Rock'n'Roll...... " to "Songs From The Wood"
then
"Stormwatch" to "A"

Horslips:
"The Unfortunate Cup of Tea" to "The Book of Invasions"

Wishbone Ash:

"There's The Rub" to "Locked In"
then
"Locked In" to "New England"

Radiohead:
as stated previously
"OK Computer" to "Kid A"

Not prog or prog-related......but probably the most dramatic change from one album to the next...

Simple Minds:
"Life in a Day" to "Real to Real Cacophony"

and not to forget......

The Skids:
"The Absolute Game" to "Joy"

biggest transition huh? hmmmm, maybe Rush (Hemispheres to Permanent Waves, prog to 80's pop basically, starting off the 1980's itself actually) and Genesis (The Lamb to ATotT), King Crimson (Islands to Larks' Tongues)....that's all i got for now...

hah. The winner by a MILE because one could throw his ENTIRE 70's output into this.  No two albums sounded the same.

He went from traditional prog rock to... this over the course of the 70's

and then from there to the sublime and irresistible L'era del cinghiale bianco.

What an amazing artist. I'd leave Raff in a heartbeat for him...LOL
