Hi, this is part 1 of a poll, asking you which album (out of 2 that are closely rated) is best: the first or last album released by a certain artist. For Part One, the band is Genesis and the albums are:

From Genesis To Revelation - 1969 (2.58/5.00 stars)
Calling All Stations - 1997 (2.54/5.00 stars)

Personally mine is the debut by a fair bit. Looking forward to what you think of them though Smile

The debut is not bad, but quite immature, a dragon launched too young. Calling All Stations is better, but it does not sound as a Genesis album to my ears, mainly because of the vocals. Ray Wilson is nevertheless a good vocalist.

Can't really decide. Sometimes I'm in the mood for that groovy vibe from their debut, other times I prefer a more mature sound.
Welcome to the middle of the film.

Interesting outcome so far!
I'm guessing Revelations will win in the long run though.

Both are awful.

The debut.

CAS by a mile. IMO it is a very underrated alum and Ray Wilson really worked for me as lead singer. FGTR is awful IMO. IMO CAS was better than We Can't Dance.
A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!

FGTR.  It's a good album and I've never shared the popular view that it's leagues below their standard.  Enough high points to easily hit 3 stars, I think.

Calling all Stations was an album that I damned to hell the first moment I heard it, back when it was released.  I listened once and never gave it another shot - until a couple of weeks ago.  Now it just sounds like a decent modern prog pop album, in fact parts of it even reminded me of Porcupine Tree.

Still, not enough good will generated at this early date to beat FGTR, which thus wins my vote hereto.

I like lot's of CAS--song wise--not crazy about the vocals---think it could have benefited if Hackett was on it (like that was ever going to happenLOL)------FGTR is not my cup of tea.

My two least favourite Genesis albums, the only studio albums that I don't own.
I chose Calling All Stations.
That album has some standout tracks, like the title track.

Thank you everyone so far, it's nice to see some defence of `Calling All Stations', fair acknowledgement of it.

Sure, it's kind of bland, and all the damn tracks end on a freaking fade-out, but I like the occasional darker atmospheres it has, mostly due to Tony Banks endless keyboards washes. Ray Wilson deserved a bit better too, a charismatic vocalist that couldn't possibly compete with the massive personality of Phil Collins.

I've always found `FGTR' pretty but totally forgettable, and I still tend to consider `Trespass' as the debut, so `CAS' easily gets my vote and I still play it once in a while.

The debut is one of the few Genesis albums that I can say that I like
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Good poll. Calling all stations by far. A good album. The mistake is to compare it with other Genesis albums. Of course Wilson is not in the same level than Collins or Gabriel, but in the album he made a decent job. IMO this albums has three problems, 1- Seems that Rutherford was not enough in the songwriting (except the tittle song), 2- They lost one of the best musical arrangers (Collins) and 3- The tracks seems to have needed a bit more "cooking". I like it much. On the other hand, FGTR is an amateur album, almost did by teenagers, and by this vision is a good one, but no more than this, and I like it too.

All has been already said in the above comments. FGTR is quite good for a bunch of teenagers at the beginning of their splendid career, while CAS is a mature album with decent songs. Though, really, I hate the fade-outs, they could have done some more proper endings on CAS, which, nevertheless, got my vote.

I've only heard CaS a couple of times (checked out from the library).  Seemed OK, but as many mention those fadeouts are just dreadful.  Why why why did they do that?

FGTR is decent.

But no vote at this time.
