As fate would have it, we have 2 feral cats that showed up when we said no more for a while.  We trapped and "fixed" them, now after 2 years they finally trust us enough to come in and are family now.  Again, sympathies to you and those who knew your cat.

Very good of you, most wouldn't have that kind of patience.
