Hi everyone, I'm not exactly a newbie to PA but haven't posted anything here before. I missed out on the classic era of prog - I suppose being too young occasionally has its drawbacks! I listen to a lot of prog, both old and current, and buy a fair amount too for my sins. I also go to as many off the UK prog festivals and other gigs as I can. And I listen (and contribute) to internet radio stations which play prog that I or others might not have heard before, either because it's obscure or it's brand new. I like other music too but prog, especially when there's a lot going on, is really what does it for me. The only prog I really don't enjoy is metal, especially if it features growls.
That's all I have to say for now, I'm sure there will be ample opportunities to say more later!

Why is that?????
I just like music to be more subtle. Not to say I don't dislike all prog metal, for example if there's metal in a track or album that has a lot of variety it's fine. But if it's constant then I get annoyed with it. To give a couple of examples, I bought DT's Black Clouds And Silver Linings and I really like it, because it's such a varied album. I also love Beardfish for the same reason. But to explain as to why I do or don't enjoy any type of music is hard. I don't like hip hop or dance music but many people do - and I'm sure there are genres of music you don't like too. I guess it's that the part of my brain which processes the sounds coming through my ears just enjoys the more complex nature of progressive rock more than anything else.

hahaha Paul, awww you made ProMetaller sad not fair!!!
Paul obviously you didn't describe well what you don't like in terms of metal because it's quite vast in terms of genres on it's own, your reply above tho' makes sense and I too feel what you mean
I love DT even if at times James LaBrie sings a tiny bit out of tune I think he is fantastic another band I like which is not well know is Furyon, that singer he accompanies those riffs so well his voice and guitar are so insync.
Death Metal etc. which you probably meant are not my favorite either.
