It just means the admins like you. Nothing special other than the title.

Hi! When I originally joined the site I thought VIP members were famous musicians or something like that. VIP staus is really just an acknowledgement for people who have been around the site for a while, visit regularly, and make a positive contribution in the forum... without necessarily posting reviews or doing other collaborative work. The only thing it really entitles you to is to vote in the Collabs' album of the year poll. A Collab would need to recommend you to Admin but they don't give this out very often.

You also get preferential seating in the threads.

It's a recognition to members who participate in the forums for a long a time with correction, but haven't wrote enough reviews to be considered a collaborator.

Just became a VIP member

Shocked .... or Smile or rather Tongue well actually Embarrassed... no I mean Beer

From what I understand, you become VIP member when the admins want to honor your contribution to the PA community.

Personally, I believe that in order for you to achieve a VIP membership it is required that you posses a certain focus on which threads you contribute to. In my case, 70's and 80's prog is archaeology and I prefer to look at the present and future prog. HOWEVER, I have a passion for the earliest expressions of prog (hence, "earlyprog") and consider myself an expert in this particular field.

I guess to become a collaborator I would have to follow up on my intention to reviewing the - in my opinoin, most essential - proto-prog music on PA in order to gain collaborator status?

Notwithstanding this, I have been a daily visitor to the PA site since 2006, and this could be the main acceptance criterion for becoming VIP Member Beer

So how many reviews do I need to do before I become collaborator?

Benefits of a VIP member include the ability to vote in PA's annual album of the year poll and a fancy title under your avatar, a golden throne in ProgArchives heaven Approve

Becoming a prog reviewer is simply based on frequent high quality reviewing on a dynamic range of albums (i.e. we don't want 50 phenomenal reviews of every album Rush has every released and nothing else). The thing that catches people up usually is they'll post a lot of 'ok' quality reviews (either they're really short or they just don't have a lot in them), they only review classic albums (Close to the Edge has hundreds of reviews, so we're not too worried about a new one), or they post one good review every two years.

There's no set number you need to meet. Generally, a good 40 or so high quality, multifarious reviews will catch the eye of an admin or collab who wants to sponsor you. If you really think you deserve it, you can always PM an admin asking to be promoted too, and it might happen.

Collabs, on the other hand, function very differently. A collaborator serves a function on the site, whether it is evaluating artists, checking the site for errors, or monitoring certain parts of the forum. Reviews play little to no part in becoming a collab. We've had collabs with not a single review or rating. Becoming a PR is a good stepping stone for becoming a collab, but it's not necessary.
