Topic: How to understand this album structure? Posted: November 01 2012 at 05:54 |
Hello guys,
My problem is basically this: have a ripped from vinyl album and I wanna cut it into individual tracks. The album jacket lists 8 tracks, and so does each album side...
But from these 8 tracks I only have track lengths for 6!! Take a look at this:
So, what woud you guys do to find out where I should cut every track??

Do the grooves in the vinyl signify a break between the two tracks (I mean those dark rings you'll often find)? That'll give you a pretty definite solution. If not I'd just play the tracks again and cut the track at where you think it finishes and the next one starts. Or find the longest period of silence or something.

Put on the vinyl album again, and time the tracks.

The thing is, after checking all the silences breaks the damn vinyl just gives me 7 tracks! And the last song, after the last silence that is, is just 30 so seconds long... so I can't see where is the damn error here!

^ Is the last 30 seconds or so, maybe just a part of that last song? Or a hidden track? Sorry if these suggestions sound stupid, I don't know the album.

I dont get it.
You allready have the times for most tracks, so we can focus only on the first part of side B.
If you got the total running time of side B, an withdraw the 18,23 min, from the last two tracks, you know how long
track 5-6 would be in total (seems they would be short as most vinyl dosent clock musc over 22 min.)
All you have to worrie about, is to find a reasonable split between the first two tracks of side B.
Unless offcourse the shown times are actualy wrong, in that case you are in deep #R%

I don't get it either and I'm not a moron for not coming myself with the same solution that you proposed lol But things are not that simple: as I already mentioned, the last track is just 30 something seconds (track 7 if we count the given tracks after each silence).
This is how the wave looks like in the sound editor:
Interesting puzzle. Could it be that the track listing/timing are wrong? Has this happened before?

Hmmm.... I'm starting to think that maybe my friend who ripped this album made a mistake... What if those 44 seconds of the "last track" are actually the first 44 seconds of the frist two tracks???? That would also explain the unusual long silence before the music.

Its a weird problem to have and if I had the album I could do it for you
Hasnt anyone here got this?
Try another thread like the shred- never know... more people visit that than here obviously as it gets a response 50 times a day...
trouble is everyone who is on the shred is quite mad...

OKay
found this listing
not much help
I did some research tho cos I do that all the time
I found this little treasure!
The track is Spare Change / Rags On A Chain
It runs for 12:49 and its locked together as one track - this may explain the prob. If its not a separate track then it must be classed as on on the vinyl despite the song lengths which are wrong
so thats weird but thats how long it is clocked at on that site
Not bad music quite jazzyyyyyy
So we have two tracks locked together at 12:49
that means the rest of Side 2 must be the other track...
not sure how long that interlude is but I guess its short
I wonder why its not listed as Prog - It sounds like prog to me.
This may need further looking into. Especially that end section when it quietens and goes into a jazz section. Lots of instrumental passages. Cool music.

You are a GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!
I myself couldn't find anything else besides auctions, and you were able to find nothing less than a TRACK! Amazing, amazing!
The best things is that the "Johny Burgess" listed as a member of Cinderblock Productions looks like the John Burgess who actually played on this album and engineered it. I already wrote him and luckily I will be able to get all the needed information about that album straight from the source!
Thanks a lot!
PS. Not a bad album at all as you said... I guess it is not listed as prog because it's a pretty scarce record, it was a private pressing and I have no idea how many vinyls were made.

Cheers!
Let us know when you hear from John Burgess as it would be interesting to find out more. Hes not from Wheel of Fortune is he - the host I mean? What a hoot if that were so.
