Topic: Computer problem with updates Posted: May 10 2011 at 05:34 |
I am using Windows XP with Avast anti-virus. I also use ZoneAlarm firewall and Malwarebytes anti-malware. I am seeking help with the following, which may be due to a virus or malware: If I do this: 1. go to 'Start', click on 'Control Panel' and click on ' 2. under 'Automatic Updates', in the middle of the window, it says 'Automatic Updates is turned off' 3. but if I click on 'Automatic Updates' under 'Virus Protection', near the bottom of the window, the 'Automatic' button appears to be switched on Can anyone tell me if the updates are on or off? Thank you in advance if you can help with this. |

It only says "Automatic Updates is turned on" if you have the updates set on "Automatic. So if you chose "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them", it's not going to say that they're "turned on" in the "Security Center".
You can check if you have uninstalled updates by going here: http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us |

The problem is the 'Security Center' window says the Automatic Updates are off, but the 'Automatic Updates' window appears to indicate that they are on.
On start up I get a message from a red shield on the icon bar saying, “Automatic updates are off.”
The website gives the following message: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view." Full scans with Malwarebytes and Avast do not seem to help. Edited by Big Ears - May 10 2011 at 06:16 |

This is what I've tried:
‘Options’ and ‘Review your update history’ gives ‘The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view’ If I click on ‘Turn on automatic updates’ the bottom of the window says ‘javascript: return false;’ The ‘Keep your computer up to date’ window, clicking on ‘Express’ or ‘Custom’ seems to give nothing. ‘News’ gives ‘Try Microsoft Update Today’ then ‘Start Now’ and a ‘Continue’ button which brings ‘The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view’ and an error number. ‘Restore hidden updates’ and ‘Change settings’ appear unavailable. I’m not sure what to do with FAQ, get help & support and Use administrator options. |

In that case something is wrong, and it is possible that your system wasn't updated for a longer time.
Considering you have antivirus and antimalware software running, you're probably "clean", but it would be a good idea to ask for help on an IT forum or to go to a service provider. |

I'm probably completely off the mark here, but could it be that you have automatic updates turned on for your virus scanner, but not for Windows?

There could be a connection between the two (Avast and Security Center), but I'm not sure how it works.

When I tried 'system restore', without success, it indicated that updates had been installed as recently as April.
Having spent so much time looking at the possibility of a virus without success, it has caused me to wonder if updates are run by a piece of software which I could have accidentally deleted. Hence the problems from the Microsoft updates page. Anyone aware of such a piece of software? Edited by Big Ears - May 11 2011 at 02:49 |

That's actually pretty much what it sounds like. Windows recognises your anti-virus program and monitors its' updating process, so if you've got auto-update set for your anti-vir, it'll show on windows panel. It might not have windows security on autoupdate though, those are two different things. You should check out the updating windows in the control panel and try that. If it's up to date, you might want to try deleting your antivirus program and reinstalling it or trying something different. XP is an old UI, so the newer versions of some programs might have hard time adjusting first, but after a few updates it should be ok. It's a good advice to keep the computer updating itself, though, and notifying about it too so that you'll know what's going on. Edited by Passionist - May 11 2011 at 03:08 |

Is you computer anti-virus are updated? I suggest that set your computer updates to automatic but have it a user notification every time it updates.
