Considering that neo-prog is an accepted genre of prog, even though it may not say neo-prog, it's pretty clear (at least to most people who have posted on the thread) that a discussion of neo-prog is what was intended.  This is also made clear by the first post on the thread which lists two of the better known neo-prog bands, and doesn't attempt to put any other definition to neo.

Always the talking about neo-prog... if its prog or not, oh give me a brake! Of course it is. I think some people should find a description of what prog is (for example on this site, under "prog rock?") ...and then listen to neo-prog and do their own conclusion. I think the makers of this site know what prog is, and they have neo-prog as a genre. And finally, I think its stupid to always talk about different styles and genres, TAKE IT JUST AS MUSIK!!!!!!!

MARILLION, PENDRAGON (maybe the greatest band ever, at least THE MASQUERADE OVERTURE speaks for that. I have just ordered the DVD; Live at last.. and more!!) , ARENA, AJALON IQ... I must listen more to neo-prog... I am sure I`ll find some more great bands.

I've never doubted that neo-prog is a style of progressive music, it's just not one I particularly enjoy. Or at all, really. But hey, RIO's not for everyone - doesn't mean it's not prog either!

Ok man anything you say, from now on when someone says death metal he means space rock and if  he talks about prog metal he means art rock! It seems that anything for you is neo-prog!

And how do you come to that conclusion?  The only bands I've described as being neo-prog are those that are generally accepted as being neo-prog.

All these new bands (you want to call them neo-prog) i dont care what label you put them on sound boring to me,they are bad copies of the older groups! Now they all sound the same to me except some very few like OZRIC TENTACLES, TOOL AND PORCUPINE TREE and they are new prog for me, i dont care if they play progmetal or space rock! I respect your opinion and you should respect mine!

I think the point is that neo-prog does not simply refer to newer prog bands, but is a pigeonhole that defines a specific sound as typified by bands like Marillion, IQ, Arena, etc...

Ozric, Tool, and PT are all awesome new prog bands, no question. But none are considered neo-prog.

The name of the thread is about new bands and not neo-prog bands!

you are right man!!!!

I have been listening to prog rock for the past 21 years and all these neo prog groups  are all very boring to me and unspiring. with the exceptions of the band you mentioned

Ozric tentacles ( the best of them all)

porcupine tree Dream theater ( 90's albums to now)

tool ( they are f**king ammazing)

 and that it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

forget the rest!!!!!!!

Well, with all due respect, I don't consider neo to be true prog. I really don't consider (Fish-era) Marillion or IQ neo-prog. I mean, IQ's latest album has a 24-minute epic on it - how can that be neo?

For pure neo, I like It Bites, Mr. So & So, ande Blue Shift. And for you neo-fans, I highly recommend you check out some of the symphonic bands of the 90s like Citizen Cain and The Watch. I think you'll leave neo behind.

That's a rather elitest statement . Just because you enjoy bands from a particular genre that you don't normaly like, doesn't automatically stop them from being in that genre.

No way Anglagard is Neo-Prog...Its an original brand of music and deserves recognition as such

Just because its more modern and has influences from 70's prog such as camel and yes doesn't make it neo.  It melodies in my opinion are superior to many of the most popular 70's prog bands.

It's not an elitist statement. Rather, I feel that the neo-prog genre and prog per se are inherently contradictory. Neo-prog is relatively simple in structure and approach, while prog isn't.

There's nothing wrong with simplicity. As a huge fan of 60s garage music, both vintage and retro, I have more music tracks in the <3 minutes range in my music library than possibly anyone else on this newsgroup.

Certain bands, like IQ, I think are mislabled, and should be called symphonic. Most others - like Hogarth-era Marillion, Pendragon, Grey Lady Down, etc. - should probably be labled art rock.

i disagree completely, I think the neo-prog genre is one of the better labels we have, for the simpler bands that take elements of both pop music and symphonic 70's prog, and seek to blend the two, and revive prog into a modern interesting form.

Well, although I love Marillion, I.Q. and Arena, I must say, agreeing with Flowerchild, that Twelfth Night is my favorite Neo Prog band.  Their album, Fact and Fiction is my favorite of all the neo-prog out there, even beating out such great albums as Script for a Jester's Tear, The Seventh House, and Songs from the Lion's Cage.  I'm a recent convert to Twelfth Night, having heard Fact and Fiction for the first time about two years ago and since then I've managed to snap up all of the band's releases on cyclops.  For anyone who hasn't experienced the songs Creepshow or Human Being, get Fact and Fiction as soon as possible.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Then what's the difference between art-rock and neo-prog?
