I'm not a NIN fan, and I can honestly say that it's bad.  The lyrics suck, there's absolutely nothing original to be found, the songs are horrendously repetitive, and a ton of the songs sound like nothing more than filler.  Yet somehow, I like it.  There are some great songs, and no matter how bad I decide it to be, I keep coming back to it.  It's not something I'd recommend, but it is something I'd listen to.

I think it's great, it sounds like Reznor's getting back to his roots in a
few of the tracks.

Just to situate me... Who, in your opinion, has done good lyrics?

Saying "who has done good lyrics" is kind of a weird thing for me.  I love Roger Waters as a lyricist for example, but he has some lyrics that I can't stand.  Lyricists who I do find consistently excellent are Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Elliott Smith and John Lennon (to name a few off the top of my head).  When I'm in the right mood I can enjoy people like Peter Hammill, Kurt Cobain, Ian Curtis, or even Conor Oberst.  I even like some of Reznor's early lyrics, but he really seems to have lost his inspiration and just started forcing this whole angsty approach he has going.

I understand. It was just a question. But if you had answered "Greg Lake" or "Jon Anderson", your first opinion would lose a bit of relevance to me...

On time: Some of NIN's lyrics are really bad, I don't think that Reznor is a great lyrics writer. But most of his lyrics really 'fill in' the music, so to me this is highly pertinent.

downward spiral has some of the best lyrics ever and a perfect drug.

The way that album captivates you and makes you feel worthless and makes you feel as if you are descending down a very angst, hate and depressing spiral of your own really blows me away.

favourite lyricists:

King Crimson (pre adrian belew)
Pink Floyd (Roger Waters)
Dream Theater
Tool
The Mars Volta
Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails
Marilyn Manson
Manic Street Preachers (richey james)
Rage Against the Machine

just off the top of my head

I like my lyrics to reflect real life rather than be all happy or about mythical stuff (ala rush, yes, genesis). Pink floyd dark side of the moon kinda sums up the dismal views on life that i like as a lyricist.

this stuff is very inpiring to me, check out my poems www.fictionpress.com/~frenchi
