Hi,
I like to creating polls and another threads in PA forum. It´s quite interesting and good relax for me and I believe for other members too.

But sometimes there is a problem with objectivity. Where is using any poll with multi-round voting, there is needed a stopping a previous round, I mean  "frozing" a members´ voting. In opposite case some members is complaining that the poll is unfair, especially when the results are very tight.

Big example:
There is a kind of "neverending" battle with rematch of the round "Genesis vs. Yes" . Creator of this poll, Undercover Boy, has unfortunately became a target of various jokes therefore.

I´m afraid that the same thing would happen to me, my recent poll is "Best Prog Singer".

Should be possible to make any check box, by which the creator of propriate poll would be able to stop voting? Thanks for the answer.

Do you have a calendar event Start Date and End Date option for polls?

The fairest way is to set, or mention if you don't have the option to end the poll yourself, a specific time (say 10:00 pm GMT October 12th, 2010) at the beginning when the poll will close, and make sure you're around when it reaches that time.  If a tie, you could make it so that the next vote will decide it, though some would complain about not having a sufficient majority percentage.

These are just pretty silly little contests more for fun than anything, so if people complain even if it's been done fairly and transparently (they knew the poll would end at a specific time or at least it would go into overtime then with specific rules) the joke's on them.

You can, of course, PM an admin (or Avestin or me) requesting that they close the topic when done, but I don't see it as necessary if you've been transparent about when and/or how it would close at the beginning of the thread.  Incidentally, I'd rather like more contests where one can have ties not that I like making art into sport altogether to begin with, but polls are fun ways to discover and share one's love of music that one may be passionate about or become passionate about, and the discussion can be fun (personally I don't care much about poll results -- more an accessory to discussion and discovery --, but many love contests).

Set a deadline date and stick to it - ignore anyone who votes or posts after the deadline.

Like Greg, I don't see locking the thread as being necessary - if people want to comment on the results then it's not a major problem either. If the vote passed the deadline then their votes doesn't count.
What?

^ Agree.

Just since I mentioned that you could PM admin requesting the closure of topics so to also close the poll, I want to note that I really don't like to see topics closed when the poll times are over, and requesting it is closed creates unnecessary work for others, as well as being disrespectful to those who posted and may wish to continue discussion.  I also think it's fine for people to comment on the results and like it when polls can continue even if the later votes don't count towards the contest (can be rather interesting). As long as the date and rules are specified to begin with, and the poll starter announces the end of the poll in regards to votes that count for the contest at the specified time (and according to the plan laid out), then I think the majority would see it as fair.  I also don't think the majority take such contests that seriously anyway.

But the only way to stop a poll is to close the thread.

(I think)

The latest Genesis vs. Yes poll has resulted in a stalemate again.

I've locked it and called it a draw. How that gets resolved is in the hands of the tournament creator, but there have been three suggestions in the thread for him to chose from:
  1. Put them both through against PFM
  2. Swap the PFM bracket with the King Crimson bracket and put them both through against King Crimson
  3. Eliminate them both from the tournament

I recommend the following for future tournaments:
  • Set fixed end dates for voting and stick to it
  • Set rules for close or tied votes
  • Use byes or seedings if necessary
  • Assign brackets randomly

I've tried to stick to that, but others thought it was unfair to close a poll when there is only a one vote difference.  Trying to please the fans and stick to the rules almost seems mutually exclusive.

welcome to my world. Wink

If you can't please everyone then please yourself.

If you are running a tournament poll then you are the boss and you cannot let rounds run indefinitely - at some point you are going to have to call it win, lose or draw. Once you miss a deadline no amount of time extension will be fair.
What?
