Are any FM transmitters actually good?

^ That;s OK....I do joke around a bit so maybe its hard to tell when I'm not.

No Ian, it doesn't turn your iPlod into a radio receiver, but a radio transmitter that broadcasts whatever you are playing on your mp3 player so that it can be received by the car stereo.

The cassette ones are even better than FM.  The Cassettes have a little bit of hiss, but in the FM transmitters the low and high end just cut out and get all weird.  I finally got a car with a line in though....

I had a '76 VW Rabbit back in '82 that only had 8-track stereo..the sytem was quite good, component type speakers and like a 10watt power booster. So I found this cassette player adapter which pushed into the 8track slot. So I was able to play my cassettes thru the 8track stereo.....crazy dude

I don't ever recall seeing one of those in use but have a vague memory of seeing a picture of one.  One of my less vague memories was of a family trip from KY back to GA and my brother wanted to play a Jethro Tull 8-track in the car player.  I was thinking cool because I was a fan of The Beverly Hillbillies.  He got to play it, but not all the way through.  Didn't make it through the first song.
