Emerson and Lake at The Birchmere

Thoroughly enjoyed the show. Carl was represented by a computer/keyboard which filled the bill nicely where drumming was required (which really wasn't that often).

Keith mainly kept with a piano/strings combination sound with occasional orchestral instrument samples and the use of his massive modular Moog. Greg's voice, while more gravelly than in the past, was spot on pitch-wise and had a beautiful deep resonance to it. The bass and guitar work was impeccable.

Keith's playing was fiery and intense at times and despite his past issues with the ulnar nerve was pretty accurate with his playing. Considering all he's been through he acquitted himself admirably and the audience made sure they appreciated him and Greg.

A highlight for me was "Pirates" which was particularly engaging.

The first gig in this tour was supposed to have been on April 1 in Cleveland, Oh. Drove five hours to see the show, only to have it cancelled two hours after the scheduled start time because Keith got stage fright. At that point I decided to forget about going to the UK for the High Voltage ELP reunion. After hearing that show a couple years later, I'm glad I stayed home.

I also wished I had seen them in their prime - I had to wait until 1992!  I wasn't able to make it but its a shame no-one has posted a review of Emerson's 'Three Fates' concerts in London last year - it sounded great although Emerson was moaning about unprofessional classical musicians (who thought the Moog was 'too loud').
