Topic: What main genre would you classify our music as? Posted: May 31 2010 at 21:39 |
So everyone in our band has a different classification for our music. One band member thinks we should be referred to as alternative. I think that is too broad though. I think we are more avant-garde or experimental. Another member thinks we're progressive/experimental. Any thoughts or other suggestions for our genre?? Very curious if anyone could suggest something..

Thanks to anyone that responds..

"So that's it? After 12 years; so long, good luck?"
"Now I don't recall saying good luck."

No need to apologize. Thanks for your answer. That sounds like an interesting genre. Must be the keyboards and Synth in Enter Bestia.

Hi,
I realize that one sometimes has to define what they do a little ... but I'm not sure that I would want to be associated with one style or this or that. I prefer the autonomy to be free and create ... and this is what separates most out there!

I haven't listened to your music, but I honestly feel like you should be celebrating the fact that nobody can peg your genre; especially when even the bandmembers themselves can't seem to agree! ll this says is that your music is interesting and eclectic enough to appeal to many different people. That can only mean a faster-growing audience.
Plus, genres are simply to make it easier to organize music. They were never meant to divide the music community like I think they have these days. Don't put too much emphasis on that stuff, and simply let your music be what it is.

Thanks for your response. I agree with you on this completely. Who cares what genre it is as long as its intriguing to listen to. It only comes down to tricky when you do have to label your band. For example, some shows we have we are asked what genre we are and it is sometimes tough to answer. Thanks again for your response.

interesting subject matter this one! i have 2 bands with which i play with.mothership oracle i"ve always classified as prog/space rock,as the influences are strong on both sides. but "la luna e le stelle" (my ambient project) i"d say-breaks all the barriers, and is difficult to classify! we use dance beats which are layered with loads of mellotron, moog e.t.c.and the music is very t.dream/vangelis inspired.but with the bumpz bumpz in it (we do it for the kids! its one way of getting them in to prog!!) it sounds like the orb doing prog-rock! lots of free-form jamming, but i tend to use an overall theme, even if some of our tracks are 40min plus epics!

Oh wait, I think I know this one, classical. We could be progressive rock though.
