Carla Bley-Appearing Nightly $9.00 (Mega Blowout Sale)
Great set (I believe it's her last ever with the big band, as even Carla can no longer afford to keep a big band active) and one that is now completely out of print on CD, so this is your last chance on this great one (of many Bley greats).
"As is made all but plain by the title, Appearing Nightly is a live outing recorded by Carla Bley's big band over two nights at New Morning in Paris in the summer of 2006. Of course we've heard Bley's large group in live settings many times over the years, but in this case it's been five years since we've heard them at all -- at least on a recording. Her last outing with a large ensemble was in 2003 for the pre-election year political album Looking for America.
Bley's last couple of records were made with her Lost Chords group, all of whom are present here: tenor saxophonist and flutist Andy Sheppard, bassist Steve Swallow, and Billy Drummond on the trap kit. Other players include trumpeters Lew Soloff, Florian Esch, and Earl Gardner; trombonists Gary Valente, Richard Henry, and Gigi Grata; Wolfgang Puschnig, Christophe Panzani, and Julian Arguelles make up the saxophone section, with Karen Mantler holding down the organ chair. Most of these players have been with Bley for many years.
The cover of the album also offers a solid clue as to what it sounds like: while it is no doubt a Bley record, meaning its compositions and arrangements are quite contemporary, and if it doesn't have the sound and feel of what it might have in the 1950s for an ensemble this size, it nonetheless echoes both. Furthermore, Bley's tunes go to some length to consciously draw these parallels by freely employing elements of well-known tunes from the great American songbook in both her compositions and in her solos. All of these tracks are filled with her requisite sophistication and humor, but standouts include "Appearing Nightly at the Black Orchid," a 25-minute long suite where Tin Pan Alley composers are paid clever homage in Bley's own solo, which quotes from "Someone to Watch Over Me" within the very framework of the composition. Other highlights include the fingerpopping swinger "Awful Coffee" with beautiful electric bass work by Swallow, and tough solos from Sheppard and Pusching. Bley's playful sense of elegance is also at work here, using many classic jazz tunes in her own piano break including a nice nod to Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." Another standout is the slightly, but pleasantly schizophrenic "Greasy Gravy" with strong work by Sheppard in a chart that references Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton. All of Bley's compositions here are rooted in the rhythm section, where melodies are simple and time signatures vary slightly, but her horn charts take the stuns somewhere far beyond that humble aspiration. The big-band stomp of "Someone to Watch" (not the Gershwin tune) swings along a multi-linear framework, where knotty harmonics and counterpoint give way to brief but fiery solos by some of her bandmates -- check Soloff's trumpet break a minute or so in. Ultimately, this is a very enjoyable set, one that begs repeated playing and deeper listening to get all the referent points, at the very least. But the truth is that it is so enjoyable, you'll find yourself getting lost in the music so often you'll forget to check."-Thom Jurek/All Music Guide [Watt]

THE BONUS MATERIAL - DETAILED REVIEW [by Aymeric Leroy]
* I Don't Know Its Name (alias The Word) (6:12) One of this set of reissues' most enjoyable revelations - a totally unknown Caravan song written and sung by Richard Sinclair. Being quite similar in structure to Winter Wine, and not a major departure from Caravan's style at the time, it's understandable why it was left off the album, although on the other hand it's a minor tragedy that it has remained unheard until now. Classic Caravan, and along with A Day In The Life Of Maurice Haylett, one of the two major album outtakes from the original line-up.
* Aristocracy (3:42) This is one of Pye Hastings' shorter songs on the subsequent album Waterloo Lily, heard here performed a year earlier with Dave Sinclair still in the line-up. The arrangement is quite similar apart from the obvious difference in keyboard instrumentation, but the overall performance, vocal and instrumental, is less assured than on the WL version, as exemplified by the final collapse.
* It's Likely To Have A Name Next Week (instrumental demo of Winter Wine)(7:48) While not as fantastic as the released version (especially in the organ department - Dave's solo on it seemed to capture the very best of hundreds of improvisations, which is not the feeling you get here), this is interesting since it featured Richard humming the tune rather than singing the lyrics, which were penned sometime later. The opening section is totally different to its final incarnation, but other than that the structure of Winter Wine is already in place, only waiting for the extra touch of Caravan perfection to become the classic it remains to this day.
* Group Girl (first version of Golf Girl with slightly different lyrics) (5:04) Very similar to the final version, with the exception of the wind instruments (John Beecham's trombone on the intro - who remains uncredited for his performance except for the Canterbury Tales compilation which restored his credit - and Jimmy Hastings' flute and piccolo) and some early lyrics that were later considered too personal and abandoned in favour of a more 'universal' story (of the "Pat" in the song, Richard sings that she "became a Missus", and that they "had a son... called Jason"). An interesting alternate take, in much the same way as a lot of the stuff on the Beatles"'Anthology" series.
* Disassociation / 100% Proof (new mix) (8:35) This is an attempt to illustrate the amount of instrumental contributions committed to tape during the sessions for Nine Feet Underground, the final result being assembled from countless different takes in order to create the best possible performance (an easy process nowadays with the computer technology, an unbelievable mess of master tape thirty years back!!). Even Richard Sinclair's vocals are slightly different, with a couple of minor changes in the lyrics. The most obvious addition in the final jamming section is an energetic guitar solo by Pye, which is fine but certainly not up to the level of Dave's organ solos, but still an interesting alternative to the version we know so well. This album was recorded live in Rome on February 18, 2011 and features three original and/or long time members of Goblin: Massimo Morante (guitar), Claudio Simonetti (keyboards), Maurizio Guarini (keyboards) plus Bruno Previtali (bass) and Titta Tani (drums) performing some of their best tracks from the group's horror-film heyday and more! I can't really say that there are any surprises here, but if you like this unique group and their 'horror soundtrack meets Pink Floyd' sound, there aren't any disappointments either! [NMNL]

This album has an interesting history and is sort of the band's 1st and 2nd album simultaneously. 
Trauma was originally recorded and released in 1970, but the band was unhappy with the work and soon after re-worked and re-recorded the album with English lyrics and a harder 'progressive hard rock' sound with nice organ and guitar work. 
This album is best known for the 13' title track, which is a heavy, psychedelic mix of Guru Guru and Deep Purple!
This great, legit reissue includes the entire original German version as bonus tracks and is the 1st time the original version has legitimately been on CD. [Long Hair]

"First official CD-release of mysterious one-off project, co-led by 3 US expatriots living in Munich, Germany: Keyboardist Jimmy Jackson, drummer George Green and Guitarist William Powell. Major point of interest for most progressive and psychedelic rockfans is Haboobs very significant connection with Amon Düül II. Bandleader Jimmy Jackson plays organ on Amon Düül's albums Dance of The Lemmings and Wolf City. He also played organ on many LPs of Embryo (Embryos Rache, Steig aus, Rock Session) and has further numerous studio credits (for example: Doldinger's Passport, Tangerine Dream Electronic Meditation). On Haboob, Jackson's effects-laden organ and mellotron (here called 'choir-organ') are quite prominent. This is a small but important classic of the early jazz/rock era, especially considering that it comes from South America, and was made concurrent to the similar explorations happening in the USA and not much later. And it has its own sound that isn't just a direct rip of the music being done of that time. Highly recommended.
"Buenos Aires, May 7th, 1972. A group of eight musicians (six Argentineans and two Uruguayans) gather at Estudios Ion, where so much good music has been put onto tape. What they create may be described as somewhat in between Ornette Coleman's and Miles Davis' ways of dealing with musical 'freedom'. Argentina was then going through hard times and a lot more hardships lay ahead. To jazz musicians, though, time was also ripe for dreams of success: after all Lalo Schifrin and Gato Barbieri were making it on the international jazz scene. Not that they took themselves for geniuses, they simply thought local jazz needed some shock treatment and trying their hand at some avant-garde music would hurt no one. Furthermore, they ranked among the best jazz players in Argentina. The two bassists in the group, Jorge López Ruiz and Jorge González, for instance, had both played with Gato Barbieri. López Ruiz had been the bassist of a legendary quintet led by Lalo Schifrin in 1956, whose saxophone player was Gato. González had been the bassist of Gato's regular rhythm section of the 1960s. Pocho Lapouble, the drummer, besides playing with the cream of Argentina's jazzmen, had been the percussionist of an (unrecorded) Astor Piazzolla sextet from 1968-1969 - the pianist and the guitarist in that group were jazz musicians too. Norberto Minichillo, percussionist in this record, but also an all-round drummer, was also playing avant-garde tango with a quintet that had Dino Saluzzi on bandonéon. Keyboardist Santiago Giacobbe had played many times with Gato Barbieri and was later to be the organist in Astor Piazzolla's 'Electric Group' of the mid-1970s. Fernando Gelbard, a well known jazzman, who had played with Gato and Chivo Borraro, appears here on Fender piano and flute. A bit younger than Giacobbe, Gelbard was at the time of this record asserting himself as a very capable musician and also a pioneer in the field of synthesizers, which were really newcomers to jazz in the early 1970s and a rarity in Argentina. Héctor Starc, the guitarist, was a young and inventive rock player. Eduardo 'Pestaña' Giovinazzo on trumpet and Jaime Prats on alto had moved from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Buenos Aires and they sure belonged in this group of high-calibre jazz musicians. Just listen to Giovinazzo's showcase 'Shhh... Bea Duerme'.. The four pieces in this album were composed by Pocho Lapouble, who was the driving force behind the project. One side of the original LP is taken by 'Ego, luego existen' ('Ego, therefore they exist') where everyone gets a chance to solo, 'Ego' is a long excursion which deserves some particular attention. The tune is quite Ornettish, the more so because it is stated by trumpet and alto in unison. Gelbard plays the first solo on Fender piano very much in one of the epochal trends: aggressively rooted in rhythm, searching, never relenting, then going into a dialogue with bassist López Ruiz, who takes over. Then we are lead into Starc's guitar solo, itself evolving in a discussion with López Ruiz's bass before letting Ruiz solo anew and sort of fade into a new Gelbard Fender piano solo. López Ruiz soloes once again, followed by Giacobbe's organ. An alto solo by Prats, relayed by Lapouble's drums, speaks with Minichillo's percussion, a conversation almost interrupted by Giacobbe's two handed solo: one of his hands plays the organ while the other one plays a Bluthner piano; then it's Giovinazzo's turn on trumpet. Throughout this piece the shifting and contrasting tempos and moods sound at one and the same time tightly controlled, yet spontaneous. The 6/8 tempo of the final part is a kind of 'tumbao' reminiscent of a related afro-argentinean folk rhythm, the 'chacarera'." [What]

Kaleidoscope-Pulsating Dreams 3 x CD set $11.00 (Mega Blowout Sale)
"Kaleidoscope were arguably the most eclectic band of the psychedelic era, weaving together folk, blues, Middle Eastern, and acid more often and seamlessly than any other musicians. The California group were formed under the nucleus of multi-instrumentalists David Lindley and Chris Darrow in the mid-'60s. Adding fiddle, banjo, and various exotic string instruments such as the oud and saz to the traditional rock lineup, Kaleidoscope complemented their experimental sounds with taut and witty (if lyrically eccentric) songwriting. Other important members were Solomon Feldthouse, who specialized in the Turkish-style instruments, and Chester Crill, who, to make documentation just that much more difficult, sometimes used odd pseudonyms like Fenrus Epp. t's a little surprising that a cult band like Kaleidoscope would get honored with an all-out three-CD set, considering the limited market. But here it is, and it certainly leaves no stone unturned, including the entire recorded output of the band while they were on Epic. That essentially covers the entire period of interest to most fans, spanning the band's formation to their breakup in the early '70s (though they subsequently reunited for some albums that aren't represented here). In addition to everything from their albums Side Trips, A Beacon from Mars, Incredible, and Bernice, it has quite a few tracks that only showed up on non-LP singles or as outtakes on posthumous compilations. And some of those extras aren't even easily found on Kaleidoscope compilations, namely the old-timey psychedelia of the early B-side "Little Orphan Nannie" and the less impressive, heavily bluesy 1968 B-side "Just a Taste." The problem with this compilation is not so much to do with the music as whether it might be suitable for either the completist or neophyte. The completist might well already have virtually all of this on the albums and scattered comps, and resent having to fork out for a three-CD set just to get those two B-sides; the neophyte might find it way too much to start (and end) with, both in length and expense. But -- if you want the complete works of Kaleidoscope in their first and best incarnation, it's all here, down to the crazy psychedelic soul single they did with Larry Williams and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, "Nobody." It's also well annotated, and contains plenty of exhilarating psychedelic world fusion highs, though the band's incredibly eclectic scope means there are some turkeys as well. "Pangaea Ultima, Steve Moore's debut record on Spectrum Spools, is an epic musical achievement, not simply for its sonic sophistication and compositional mastery, but also because Moore has crafted here an album that has come as close to any in transcending the boxed human logic of time and place. The album title refers to the name which geologists have given to the future super-continent that is suggested may form on earth in the next quarter-of-a-billion years. Over the course of the nine pieces on Pangaea Ultima, Moore meditates upon the realization of this new land mass in an uncharted part of the world's moment. How will this continent come to be formed? What forces and what processes create it? What is this continent's terrain of "Endless Mountains" and "Endless Caverns," and on what kind of planet will it be? These are all speculative questions that alight the listener as they are subsumed into Steve Moore's synthscapes which unfurl with equal amounts of delicacy and meticulous detail. In some respects, the attitude and ambition of Pangaea Ultima places this work in a similar canon as the mythic territory of Tangerine Dream's Phaedra or the cosmic imaginations of Michael Stearns' Planetary Unfolding, and yet it evades both comparisons as easily. There is something mysteriously self-contained, urgent that pervades these assemblages of tracks. "Logotone" exhibits Moore's ability to stretch the sensibilities of melodic and chordal phrasing to limits that Schulze or Alan Hawkshaw wouldn't have gone. The compositions on Pangaea Ultima, like "Planetwalk" and "Nemesis" are more tightly coiled even in their constant straining to explode outwards to the stars beyond. And when Moore plays with rhythms, they resemble the idiosyncratic mould of his releases for Long Island Electrical Systems, Future Times and Kompakt, and yet seem to push even further towards an eerie sparseness yet to be fully tapped. If there are 4/4 kicks on Pangaea Ultima, like on "Deep Time" and the title-track, it's for a world skewed on a bent axis. Musically, this is a record of both microscopic and macroscopic reward, an absorbing listen that betrays the album's 60 minutes of length. Which again returns us to the question of time and how so expertly Moore has managed to avoid it. Or more so, how he has managed to find a fold in time -- an atemporal space -- here this album anomalously nestles by itself. Moore reaches out to the moment of genesis of Pangaea Ultima and slips into its imaginary logic of time and place. He does not intrude or indulge there. Nor are there any "retro" homages or "sci-fi" tropes/ambitions on Pangaea -- we cannot even be sure whether humans have a history they can call a future on this continent. Yet just as easily, as geologists concede, this future super-continent may never end up eventuating, which would mean this imminently possible reality will melt into fantasy. But this too, is not a bad place for Steve Moore's masterpiece to end up, either." [Spectrum]

This excellent soundboard recording - which rivals professional live albums of the same period - features the quartet version of Mountain: Leslie West-guitar/vocals, Felix Pappalardi-bass, Corky Laing-drums and Steve Knight-keyboards. This is the band in early prime, performing while the music was still fresh to them and with them in their most 'progressive hard rock' period, with tons of great, heavy playing that contemporary stoner bands can only hint at. Conditionally hugely recommended.

In the early 1980s, there was a small explosion of interesting and very unique progressive music coming out of Mexico. One of the paths being explored at that time was music that fused progressive music and ambient music with the instruments of pre-Hispanic Mexico; the sounds BEFORE the conquerors came and changed the continent hugely. The bigger names in the field were Suso Saiz and Jorge Reyes, but one of the first people to release a record that gained attention outside of Mexico was Luis Perez, who released this album in 1981.

A completely unknown and previously undocumented but pretty great jazz-rock band! Shocking that they not only never got an album out, but that no one had heard of them before this. They definitely deserved better!
"No progressive rock music fan should be misled by the album title Jazz macht Spazz, a bowdlerization of 'jazz makes fun,' this is progressive jazz-rock at its best. Büdi Siebert (flutes and saxes), Herbert Binder (guitar), Frank Fischer (bass), later with Release Music Orchestra, Thomas Rabenschlag (keyboards) and Bea Maier (drums), later with Zomby Woof and Moira, all well trained on the instruments, played a varied, inventive, melodic and often furious kind of music with lots of Krautrock magic influenced by Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Soft Machine and Weather Report. 5 titles on this CD were recorded at German radio station SWF, 2 titles are live recordings (taped from the soundboard), all in all 77 minutes of great flute and sax playing, furious and lyrical guitar and bass work, hypnotic rhythm patterns and perfect keyboard sounds. Hard to believe that Puppenhaus never recorded an album. Digitally remastered from original master tapes. A RIO/chamber rock-styled band from Belarus. They are a 7 piece of Vitaly Appow-bassoon, Maxim Velvetov-guitars, Cyrill Christya-violin, Olga Podgaiskaja-keyboards, vocals, Anna Ovchinnikova-cello, Dmitry Maslovsky-bass and Nikolay Gumberg-drums.
Their debut was very good, although they could have used a little more time playing together before making their album. But now, they HAVE spent more time together and it shows. About as good of a rehearsal-intensive chamber rock album as you can think of. Their press release claims influences of: Shotakovich, Stravinsky, Webern, Ives, Henry Cow, Art Bears, Univers Zero, Present and Debile Menthol. Check! Check! and DOUBLE check!
"While the first Rational Diet release (AltrOck, 2007) appeared inevitably not so homogeneous, collecting compositions and recordings spread in the space of several years, this At Work offers an image definitely more complete and direct of the belorussian band. The more improvised sections have been reduced to the essential, the matching of acoustic and electric instruments even more successful. But what is really amazing is the attitude of these musicians, so far away from every canonical rock and prog influences, and yet so well characterized and recognizable in the chaos of «alternative» rock and its infinite branches. The style, well clear yet in the first cd, comes from the Russian twentieth century: the music oozes with Stravinsky and Shostakovic everywhere, but refracted through the «chamber rock» lens, able of inconceivable dynamical range both for a traditional acoustic ensemble and a «normal» rock group. The listening is extremely pleasant, and will meet the tastes of many fans, even the most disparate. Among the songs we’d like to mention Pukhow: after an unexpectedly melodic introduction, it goes through rhythmycal sharpest knots, where piano, bassoon, guitar and violin chase each other until they join together in a rocklike three-notes phrase. Such a pleasant surprise is Olga Podgaiskaja’s voice, a perfect Queen of the Night: listen to her interventions in Dear Kontrabandist or, even better, Wet Moss, brief but simply devastating. Finally we point out the beautiful Condemned, real peak of the album: aggressive and at the same time persuasive, in about ten minutes it gathers all the timbrical, rhythmycal and expressive facets of Rational Diet, then closing in a pure fury crescendo. The album ends with the slow modal melody of On Tuesdays, still played by the voice, hypnotic and mysterious, that seems emerge from the sound mists drawn by violin and saxophone, and cradled by the solemn gait of the organ. In short, At Work is an astonishing work, for its lucidity and conviction, by a group of musicians with an enviable qualification and a talent that would deserve much more attention by the audience and – a side that we, in Western world, often neglect – less political and civil obstacles in their country." Hard to believe that this strange rarity was reissued on CD and reissued legitimately, but here it is on the Long Hair label, who do these things well! Sabicas was a famous Spanish flamenco guitarist who lived in the USA for a number of years. In 1970, under pressure from his brother, he recorded this fusion of Spanish music with psychedelic rock and jazz in a band that features US guitarist Joe Beck, Tony Levin on bass, Warren Bernhardt on piano and organ and Donald McDonald on drums. It's a surprisingly solid progressive album, especially for how early this is and considering the meeting of Spanish traditionalist with NY rockers, it could have been a mess, but it compares very well with Spanish bands doing a similar thing several years later. "This album shows a fantastic mixture of authentic traditional flamenco, progressive and psychedelic rock by Spanish legend Sabicas and extraordinary electric jazzrock guitar by Joe Beck with congenial backing band among others Donald MacDonald on drums, Warren Bernhardt organ and Tony Levin on bass. Secret Chiefs 3-Book Of Souls: Folio a $15.00
"This second album in the Secret Chiefs 3's "Book of Truth" trilogy is a monumental triumph. Aside from its wide array of musical styles and sounds, the album features meticulous production from beginning to end. It is accessible, enchanting, and rewarding.  
There are thirteen tracks present; seven songs comprise the majority of the album, separated by six short and elaborate soundtracks which resemble radio station identifier sounds. As such, the album is balanced and flows smoothly in spite of its ambitious variety. The seven SC3 sub-bands are all present and occasionally integrated for the first time: each sub-band has their own full-length song, with two exceptions (Holy Vehm and NT Fan) making appearances in the radio-themed tracks.   
Although more could be written about this album, words are a poor substitute for the blissful experience of hearing it." [Web of Mimicry]

Guitarist and composer Raoul Björkenheim emerged from Finland in the 80s with Edward Vesala's band, then started his own group, Krakatau, who recorded for ECM and Cuneiform.
He is probably best known for his work with Scorch Trio and with Bill Laswell and Morgan Agren in Blixt,  but he has been a busy, active player for the last 30 years. As anyone who has every seen him can attest, he is one of the great, unheralded guitarists of our time.
Ecstasy is his new electric, ecstatic jazz band, which features some of the younger talents on the Finnish jazz scene and which was designed to be an ensemble that will regularly go out and tour. The group consists of Raoul, Pauli Lyytinen (saxophones),  Jori Huhtala (contrabass) and Markku Ounaskari (drums) in a repertory of original compositions painting swirling polyrhythms with a free-tonal palette.
With influences ranging from Korean and African music to contemporary chamber music, new jazz and free rock, Ecstasy's mission is to elevate its audiences with their high energy and dedication to adventurous sound.
"The band name Ecstasy refers to a music that is so fluid and intelligible that it flows around and past obstacles, and attains the listener by surprise and joy. The Ed Palermo Big Band-Oh No! Not Jazz! 2 x CDs $21.00

The Ed Palermo Big Band is led by alto saxist and arranger Ed Palermo; he has had this big band with much of the same personnel for over 30 years, which is a hugely impressive feat in itself, and has had his band performing the music of Frank Zappa for 20 years.
The band is a 18 piece ensemble of five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass and drums. There are a number of ensembles performing the music of Frank Zappa, who, 20 years after his death, is now recognized as one of the greatest American composers of the 20th century, but no one does it with the ease, skill and originality that Ed and his band do!
Oh No! Not Jazz!! consists of two discs of musical performances. The first disc further explores Ed's distinctive, big band interpretations of the music of Frank Zappa and for the most part, he concentrates here on Frank's initial burst of creative works from original Mothers Of Invention era of 1966-1970. In addition, two notable pieces from later are performed here. One of Frank's most loved works, Inca Roads, with a vocal by guest Napoleon Murphy Brock contrasts with one of his most 'notoriously difficult' works, The Black Page #2. All of the performances and arrangements of these great pieces are fun, musically witty and masterful. The second disc features Ed's own colorful compositions, which are here featured on a recording for the 1st time in over 25 years! 
Both discs show that despite the financial and practical difficulties of running a large sized band, that the very fact that there are so many musical voices in a big band allows for showcasing arrangements better than any other vehicle. This is an exciting listen for fans of Frank Zappa and all adventurous rock and jazz music. [Cuneiform]

After co-founding Univers Zero in 1974 and co-leading that group through their first two albums, guitarist and composer Roger Trigaux left Univers Zero in May, 1979, right after the completion of Heresie.
His new ensemble, Present, was a more electric and a more compact ensemble: electric grand piano (Alain Rochette), electric guitar and electric piano (Roger), electric bass (Christian Genet, also of Univers Zero) and drums (Daniel Denis, also of Univers Zero). 
Originally conceived strictly as a studio project, the band began rehearsals in 1979 and began to record their first album, Triskaidekaphobie (The Fear Of The Number 13) in January, 1980. After all the rehearsals and all of the work of recording this album, Roger realized that this was a perfect ensemble to play live, as the musicians all got along well and the ensemble was small enough to be a practical outfit and the band began performing in the fall of 1980.
Since Present only had about 35' of music written for the group, in their earliest days, the band also performed two 'covers' from Univers Zero's repertoire; Dense (from Ceux du Dehors) and Vous Les Saurez En Temps Voulu (from Heresie). Recordings of these two covers, from a performance from 2/28/81 are included here as bonus tracks. 
This reissue of Triskaidekaphobie includes the original album, newly transferred and remastered by the group's long-time engineer, Udi Koomran, and a 16 page booklet telling the story of the band and this album, with many never-before seen photos as well as the aforementioned 20' of bonus material! Present was founded in 1979 by guitarist/composer Roger Trigaux, who first came to attention as the co-leader of Univers Zero, which he co-founded in 1974.
After two now legendary albums with Univers Zero (Univers Zero - 1977 and Heresie - 1979), he left to have the chance to create his own, personal, musical vision. 
A quartet of electric guitar, electric and acoustic grand piano, electric bass and drums, Present featured the stupendous drumming of Daniel Denis, the other co-founder of Univers Zero, so Present's sound is a more rock-oriented encapsulation of the unique music Roger had been composing, performing and honing for years.
Originally recorded in 1983, Le Poison Qui Rend Fou (The Poison That Makes You Insane), the band's second and final album until their rebirth in the mid 90s, is a classic of complex, Rock In Opposition-style electric chamber rock. 
This reissue of Le Poison Qui Rend Fou includes the original album, newly transferred and remastered by the group's long-time engineer, Udi Koomran, and a 16 page booklet telling the story of the band and this album, with many never-before seen photos. Additionally, there is 25' of QuickTime movies of the group's final concert featuring bassist Christian Genet, from Livry-Gargan, France, 1/23/82, as well as a second disc that features the entire 80' concert from 1/23/82! Sonar is a progressive, post-minimal band from Switzerland. Their name stands for SONic ARchitecture, a name which alludes to their intention of creating polymetric and highly structured avant-rock. Static Motion is their second full-length release, and their first release outside of Switzerland. 
Fusing a rigorous minimal esthetic with the power of a rock band, every note and rhythm is precisely composed and performed, all of which are designed to move you from one rhythmic and / or harmonic tension to the next. Sonar is the last word in a rock band that works by building their music out of blocks consisting of slowly rising and unfolding musical tension and relief. While you can hear elements of Sonar's sound in ensembles such as Glenn Branca, King Crimson, Pharaoh Overlord, Present, etc, ultimately, no one else sounds like this and Static Motion is a powerful and extraordinary listen!
Just about everything is different with Sonar: the sound, the harmonies, the rhythms, the whole musical concept. Their instantly recognizable sound is partly due to the special tuning of the guitars and the bass guitar to tritones (C / F# / C / F# / C / F#), an interval sometimes called the "devil in music" ("diabolus in musica"). 
A large proportion of their music is played using only the natural harmonics of these two notes, thereby creating a harmonically ambiguous musical microcosmos that the group calls "tritone harmonics" and that avoids conventional musical cliches. The group's rhythms are also highly unconventional and usually consist of layered polyrhythms and isorhythms in odd metres.  
Sonar's music is always played live without any sequencers, loops or computers, using a minimum amount of equipment: 2 guitars, a bass guitar, 3 small amplifiers und a basic drum kit. Nearly effect-free (with just a touch of reverb and tremolo allowed), the band does this to keep the music as clear, direct and immediate as possible. Sonar does not consider itself or operate as a collection of soloists; rather, their efforts are oriented towards collective efforts making the music more than the sum of the individual parts of the players. Thumbscrew [Mary Halvorson / Michael Formanek / Tomas Fujiwara]-Thumbscrew $15.00

Thumbscrew, a band consisting of three well-established leaders on the new jazz/new music scene, make inviting music full of wonder and discovery. With their eponymous debut album, they document the group's commitment to new music created specifically for this ensemble.
While Michael Formanek (double bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums) and Mary Halvorson (guitar) are all known for their prodigious capabilities as improvisers, Thumbscrew is more of a composer’s vehicle. While many cooperative bands draw on material recycled from other projects, "One of the things we said at the beginning is let’s just write music for Thumbscrew and it will only be Thumbscrew music," says Formanek. "It really is a three-composer trio, and all of our tunes have our basic aesthetics attached. But we want everybody to have input. Nobody’s afraid to make a decision. It’s one of the first co-ops I’ve been in where everyone’s really willing to take control at any given moment." 
With each musician contributing three tunes, the album encompasses an array of textures and strategies, while maintaining a consistently open and transparent sound. Generating tremendous intensity without necessarily increasingly volume or density, Thumbscrew buzzes and crackles, burns and croons. The group is both open and composerly. Part of what makes the band’s music so engaging is that they draw widely and deeply from any number of sonic sources.
Part of the trio’s strength flows from the deep interconnecting bonds they’ve forged. Halvorson and Fujiwara first started playing together in cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum’s Sextet. They also work together in the collective quartet Reverse Blue with Chris Speed and Eivind Opsvik, and Mike Reed’s fascinating Sun Ra-inspired ensemble Living By Lanterns. 
They first worked with Formanek when he subbed in Bynum’s band in 2011, and the chemistry between the three was so readily apparent they immediately started looking into performance opportunities as a trio. This fine, distinctive effort is the result of 2 years of planning, rehearsing and gigging. [Cuneiform]

Completely wonderful to see a reissue of this extremely rare 1970 Brit-jazz album, which was Harry's first under his own name and originally released on Phillips. This features a just unbelievable band of Brit-jazz talent: Harry Beckett-trumpet/flugelhorn, John Surman-baritone and soprano sax, Mike Osborne-alto sax, Alan Skidmore-tenor and soprano sax, Frank Ricotti-vibes, John Taylor-piano/Wurlitzer electric piano, Chris Lawrence-bass and John  Webb-drums. 
There's some great themes and some great solos. And I just love the sound of John's over-driven Wurlitzer (then again, those things are ALWAYS overdriven!). And the front line of Surman, Skidmore and Osborne...3 years before S.O.S.! Those were the days! 
This CD reissue came out about a decade ago and has been out of print ever since. We just found the last quantity in existence, hiding behind some other CDs in the stacks and completely mis-filed and missing since we first got them in! Bitter Funeral Beer Band-Live in Frankfurt 82 $17.00

Drummer Bengt Berger put together this amazing, sadly short-lived ensemble for a couple of years in the 80s. Bengt had previously played in Sweden's legendary Archemedes Badkar and this took the world music and jazz influences that the band had been heading towards with their fantastic 'Tre" release and made it even better. This includes many of the musicians that were in Badkar as well as others, including legendary trumpeter Don Cherry, all of whom play absolutely great. The only bad thing about this release is that I've had this tape for decades and I wanted to release it on Cuneiform, but when I told Bengt about its existence, he ended up doing it on his label. At least it's out and available and I got sent a copy! A MUST own. Top 10 of the year for me. Easy. Maybe THE top archival release of 2007.

Bill Bruford's Earthworks-Video Anthology 2: The 1990s NTSC (all region) DVD $11.00 (Mega Blowout Sale)
"When Earthworks Mark I first appeared in 1987, its looser improvisational approach mixed with considerable technology made perfect sense, given Bruford's early 1980s work with the technology-heavy King Crimson. But while Bruford had been working with a blended kit of acoustic and electronic drums for a few years at this point, nobody could have been prepared for his chordal drums—electronic drum pads that could be programmed with actual chords so that Bruford could lay down not just a rhythmic foundation but a harmonic one as well, seen clearly on Vol. 2's first track, the catchy "Up North." This first version of Earthworks was another case of Bruford finding the best up-and-coming players to work with him in saxophonist Iain Ballamy and keyboardist/horn player Django Bates. Both have moved on to successful careers of their own (and Ballamy has since managed to get his hair under control), but to watch this group over the course of two performances is an eye-opener. With its reliance on Bruford's chordal drums for many of the tunes, there's no question the music was more structurally rigid than Earthworks Mark II. Still, there's plenty of room for soloing, and it's remarkable to watch Bruford effortlessly carry the groove even while serving up the chord changes. Of course, Bruford gets plenty of time on the acoustic side of his kit, with Bates often taking over accompaniment during Ballamy's solos. The latter had become a considerably more intuitively responsive drummer by the time of Earthworks Mark II, but the culmination of that direction is in full view here. Since Earthworks Mark II did form in the late 1990s, there's a final show on Vol. 2 that features the Clahar/Hamilton/Hodgson lineup in its early days. Perhaps the most telling difference between the two Earthworks groups is on this second DVD, where each group closes its set with the Bruford/Ballamy/Bates tune "Bridge of Inhibition." A tune with a dervish-like theme that then breaks down for individual soloing, it's an ideal touchstone to the different complexions of the two Earthworks groups, especially in exposing the effects of a more open improvisational mindset. And this tune, more than any other in the entire repertoire of both Earthworks groups, is evidence that Bruford has the capability of playing free—something that would surprise fans of his more measured, metrical playing in Yes, King Crimson, or even his 1970s Bruford group. As with Vol. 1 the presentation is spare: one mix, full frame. But for fans who never had the opportunity to catch earlier versions of Earthworks, both DVDs are essential viewing. And with trips outside Europe increasingly prohibitive both logistically and financially, Bill Bruford's Earthworks Video Anthology Vol. 1: 2000's and Bill Bruford's Earthworks Video Anthology Vol. 2: 1990's are equally essential for North American fans who will rarely—if ever—get the chance to see the current line-up."-John Kelman/All About Jazz [Summerfold]

Don Cherry-Live In Stockholm (mini-lp sleeve) $19.00
77' minutes of previously unreleased, LONG tracks in great sound from Don Cherry's important Swedish period, recorded in 1968 and 1971!
This is where he really began to explore music beyond jazz, fusing it with folk and beyond music. 
The two tracks from 1968 features Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano, Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. 
On the nearly 30' track from 1971, he's deep into the sound of his Organ Music Society work. This features Cherry with Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Really surprisingly advanced sounding 'AACM African American heritage meets psychedelia' ensemble, who released this in 1968 (?) and which consists of 1967-1968 recordings, including amazingly out for the time-period guitar-work by Pete Cosey. Really great stuff and highly recommended! 
"Philip Cohran is a Chicago mainstay who was part of Sun Ra's band as a trumpeter from the '50s until Ra left Chicago in 1961. He was also instrumental in helping to create the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which spawned Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Leo Smith, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and countless others. This disc is a compilation of recorded material by his Artistic Heritage Ensemble recorded in the later '60s that is visionary in its marriage of African rhythms, funk, and jazz improvisation. The band at the time included future Miles guitar monster Pete Cosey and a couple of cats who went on to join Earth, Wind & Fire's horn section. AHE's tunes were structured around riffs and melodies created by Cohran's frankiphone, an amplified African thump piano. He played cornet as well, but the frankiphone was the backbone of the entire band -- 15 members strong. From here the horn sections would work into a harmonic read of the opening riff and begin their ascent into the body of a track, and the singers, guitarists, and percussionists would be adding color, space, and texture to all of it...There are too few records like this, too few moments in musical time where everything converges and marries the past to the future in the heart of the now. Yes, really: $3.00 for 3 CDs in a snazzy little box. This is the soundtrack to a 1976 BBC documentary series about blues, which apparently was never shown again. It says here that discs one & two comprise the long-lost soundtrack LPs to 'The Devil's Music', a highly acclaimed 1976 BBC documentary series. Disc three reissues a rare live LP recorded at a 1963 European blues festival. I have a lot of blues material and I didn't have most of this stuff and the 3rd disc - which is live at a European fest in 1963 and completely unreleased otherwise, includes big names like Memphis Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson and Matt Murphy. 
"You can't go wrong with this collection-ranging from the jug band sounds of Sam Chatmon to the boogie woogie of Little Brother Montgomery to the raw back-country sounds of Bukka White. Somewhat more modern sounds include the New Orleans strut of Fenton Robinson and the Louisiana beat of Billy Boy Arnold. The legendary Aces take you to Chicago in the 50's, and the unique nine-string guitar master Big Joe Williams exorcates Tricky Dick in "Watergate Blues". I've never heard of James DeShay, who dominates Disc #2, with some rowdy,overamped electric blues live from what sounds like a tiny dive. His version of Howlin' Wolf's "Evil" is fine. The third disc stems from the "American Folk Blues" tours of Europe in the early 60's, which inspired the likes of John Mayall, the Animals, and the Stones. Decent live recordings of fantastic performances by Sonny Boy Williamson II, Memphis Slim, and Matt "Guitar" Murphy. This album has an interesting history and is sort of the band's 1st and 2nd album simultaneously. 
Trauma was originally recorded and released in 1970, but the band was unhappy with the work and soon after re-worked and re-recorded the album with English lyrics and a harder 'progressive hard rock' sound with nice organ and guitar work. 
This album is best known for the 13' title track, which is a heavy, psychedelic mix of Guru Guru and Deep Purple!

The group expands and contracts, ranging in size from quintet to a full eleven-piece for Miller's episodic, metrically-challenging and texturally rich "5s & 7s" - the largest ensemble Miller has written for to date. Miller's writing has never been more complex yet approachable, and the indefinable British nature of his writing, dating back to Matching Mole, remains a defining quality.
Miller, always a democratic leader, has also never been so liberal in providing his musical cohorts solo space. Still, while he doesn't take a proper solo himself until half-way through the disc, his distinctive and immediately recognizable harmonic voicings can be heard throughout. This is really an extraordinary buy on an extraordinary work. Originally released in Fall, 1967, this is the very first album by Pink Floyd and is one of the very best releases from the original psychedelic period of music. Period. Band leader Syd Barrett really was a genius, releasing gem after gem until his downfall, which came early and fast, but you can hear why there's still interest in his work nearly 45 years later and over 35 years after he went silent. The rest of the band back him sympathetically and interestingly and as I said, this is a true high-water mark in adventurous, exploratative music, which manages to combine short song-forms with experimentation and to bestow on long-form wig-outs, the listenability of songs. If you don't own this album, I would say that it basically belongs in *any* rock music collection. "But I already own this", I hear you say. Well, maybe you do, but this 40th Anniversary Edition has the album very sympathetically remastered from the original tapes, both mono and stereo with each version getting its own disc. That's right, for the 1st time in 40 years, you can hear the entire original mono mix of the album - and remember that in 1967 bands used to labor over the mono mixes much longer than over the stereo mix, as most people did not have stereo reproducing equipment. The mono and stereo mixes are quite different and there were many ideas used in the mixing of the mono mix that did not make its way to the more familiar stereo mix and vice-versa. I know this album like the back of my hand and the mono mix was a minor revelation. So, again, you probably need this. Unconditionally recommended at any price and at this price?... [EMI]
