Well I'm kinda taking the idea from idmforums, but I think it would be great here also.

I think it would be fantastic, considering lots of us are actually composing prog music at the moment and recording it (myself included), for us to get recognised on the forums. Maybe our own little forum status? So like instead of 4 stars and Prog Reviewer written below my avatar, it would have no stars and PA Artist written underneath? Or something along those lines, I don't know, make something up.

The only issue is seperating the actual artists from those who just fiddle about with some prog music in their bedrooms. We want actual people we can listen to over the web, so I've thought of these parameters:

1. The artist must be in the PA database, so you click on all artists on the home page and you can find them
2. At least one legitimate disk must be registered to the artist page
3. MUST be progressive by PA's standards (obviously)
4. Must have original material
5. Must have made "x" amount of posts on the forum

This will filter out spammers, copyright infringement, non-prog and artists whose material is non-existent.

So what does everyone think? It will take a bit of work, but I'm sure the like of "Epignosis" and Alex (MovingPictures07 [i think that's right?]) wouldn't oppose to a little bit more publicity on the internet? And considering this is the most popular prog site on the web I think this could be extremely beneficial.

To be honest with you, I've already caught the flak of being both a collaborator and an artist.  I didn't really like it.

I'd like to peacefully make my music and have it noted here (since my music is progressive) without some questioning my ability to review and evaluate other albums and artists.

The best thing for an artist such as you to do is this:

1) Build an album's worth of material and make it available either by mail or by download.

2) Petition an appropriate genre team for inclusion into the archives.

You can of course use your forum signature (As Rob has). You could make it clear in that signature who you are and who your band is.

I'm a p*ss artist, does that qualify?

There's enough elitism on this forum thank you very much!

Fair enough... Just thought it would be nice, no real elitism intended, more publicity. Wish I hadn't asked now...

I'm not sure if using a supposedly unbiased musical archives for 'publicity' by site members is a very good mix. ...I'm a pro musician too.

Just for the record (not being a professional, or even amateur, musician, I'm not affected by that), on the ProgressiveEars board there was a rather strong argument, which almost ended up in a flame war, about professional musicians advertising their output in the forums. It started with fingers pointed and names mentioned, and ended up with at least one well-known musician leaving the site in a huff. I'm sure we want to avoid something like that here.

We have "Music and Musicians Exchange" and "Get The Word Out". That ought to be enough to avoid a huff, though some have got a little uppity when their threads got moved into those locations.
What?

Could have something to do with people seldom visiting these sections of the forum (comparitively anyway)

I'm not asking for blatant advertising of an artist on the forums. I'm just asking for the artists to have a little something in their status and be fully recognised by the forums as well for their artistic achievement. I don't see how this could cause fights. All it will do is earn the respective artist a bit more respect around here, that is all, similar to say, if you were an admin or whatnot.
