Tthe first chords of What We Are Fighting For, the first track I heard on MySpace yelled 'metal' at me - but after these opening chords vanished, that changed. There's metal in there, and melodic rock, but als more Jazz Rock related instrumental work (as usual, I can't keep my ears from filtering out the great bass work Embarrassed).

Play It By Ear, which was released earlier as a single is a completely different beast - style wise at least. It has less of the metal influences, and a more psych style vocal. At the same time, it's less 'ear challenging' than What We Are Fighting For. Then again - that may allow musicians like myself to indeed play it by ear and join the band in a private harmony.

Cannabis Chronicles is, again something completely different. Much more jazzy in the opening, with some hard rock/metal riffing over it. A weird track, that comes across a bit messy at first, but with an interesting structure in the music.

I'll stop here - the other three tracks are for the reader to discover by themselves.

To me, Ars Poetica fits in with other new acts like Lobster Newberg, who have a lot of influences and mix it all into their own blend. Let's see what the forthcoming EP Night Owl will bring - according to the band's MySpace site it's supposed to be recorded over Christmas and will be released in the spring of this year. Maybe the HP and JR team should have a listen here.
