I am not quite sure what I think might be accomplished here, but I heard voices in my head.  "Post it and they will come".  Anyhow, from time to time discussions exist regarding the use of genre tagging on this site, either on an album by album basis or on a song by song basis.  With the number of bands, albums, and songs on this site such a tagging system might be virtually impossible, especially given the judgmental nature of the tags and music in the first place.  Rather than jump in with both feet, I was thinking that maybe we could start with a well known band with lots of songs to see how this might work out.  The somewhat easier task is to tag Yes on an album by album basis; but in addition they can be tagged on a song by song basis.  Anyhow, below (hopefully) is a list of all of Yes' albums and songs and what I am hoping that those ambitious ones of you (or those that are just bored) will go through and enter genre tags for each of their albums, or even better each of their songs.  Alternatively to using my list below, it might be easier to go to Mike's website www.progfreak.com, and enter your tags there.  As I said I am not sure what, if anything, will be accompolished by this thread but I thought that it might be a good idea to see how it might work out.  Yes is listed as a symphonic rock band, but when it is all said and done will most of their songs be listed as heavy prog or pop rock or eclectic or prog-related.  I am also curious to see the variety of opinions about certain songs might exist.  Hopefully, this strikes a chord with some of you and thank you in advance for your participation.

I understand the desire to tag every moment of music from every band on PA, but there are practical reasons for genre placing rather than tagging, more is not always better..  and I can't agree with the example-- that Yes's catalog would be mostly Heavy or Pop is a stretch

Personally I like the way Mike has implemented tagging on his site. As far as Yes goes, their albums don't differ that wildly so I would put most of them down as symphonic but add some tags to others such as orchestral for Time And A Word and Magnification, jazz-fusion for Relayer, perhaps even "pop" for 90125 etc.

Just to clarify, I am not stating or suggesting that Yes is more pop or heavy prog than symphonic.  That part of my post was just speculation on my part of a possible result out of hundreds of possible results (Not really with Yes, but I hope that that makes sense).  Also, personally I am generally good with the selected genres and decisions made by the genre teams.  I understand that much thought goes into the placement of each band, and that as a general rule bands are placed in the genre where either most of their music most closely lies or in cases like Genesis or Yes where most of their progressive rock music most closely lies.

As far as the tagging by album or by song goes, I think that it would be a useful tool on this site, but probably not practical, and with the huge quantity of music that we are talking about, the idea of going back and tagging all of these band's albums and songs is also highly unrealistic.

On the other hand, I am curious as to how this might work and that was kind of my purpose of this thread.  I chose Yes as an example because they are well known by most of us on here, so I figured that there was a better chance of participation in my hairbrained idea.  The other reason that I chose Yes is because like Chopper said their music isn't all that varied so I figured that they might be simpler to tag than say Frank Zappa.  Most likely, the tags would fall in symphonic, jazz/rock fusion, crossover, prog-related, and pop.

I thought that those that are in favor of adding tags to the site might be interested in participating in this experiment and if it went well then (1) it could be presented as some sort of tool that could be used.  Maybe as a link on the Yes page or something; and (2) if the response was good then I might move on and create new threads for other bands (mostly big bands) and (3) if that went well than maybe try and tackle some of the more confusing additions like Frank Zappa or The Beatles.

If noone is interested in participating, then I will abandon the idea and crawl back under the rock I came out from.
