next year will be TOMMY year (40 years!); so i´m thinking that DT should make a cover  album of the rock opera by The Who. it can be just amazing  stuff, imho. what you are thinking?

Although I'm not really a big The Who fan I might give this a listen. I can see Portnoy having this on the list of albums to cover since he is a huge fan, but he already did do the Amazing Journey project with Paul Gilbert and I don't know if the other members of the band are really that big of fans of The Who.

Plus Rudess would have nothing to do since he can't do crazy keybord runs over that type of music

I don't think that they should stop doing covers, but I do think that they should stick to their genre when doing covers.

Then again, as long as what happened with Master of Puppets never happens again I'm fine! Wink

Well, they're not my favourite band LOL, but I like a lot of their music and I definitely agree that most of their covers are not enjoyable at all.

Personally I think they should concentrate on writing good material for their next album after the awful "Systematic Chaos":(
To this end they should hire a producer and make up their minds what kind of band they want to be!
Do they want to be a Metallica cover band(mind you with someone who can sing lol) or do they want to be a Prog band.
They should try to diversify their sound more like they did on "Octavarium".
IMHO the prog metal Metallica wannabe riffing is getting real tired:(
Being the most talented musicians in music right now I think they are capable of recording a PROG masterpiece!!!
A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!

Oh man, for a moment there I got scared they would actually do it!...Confused

Na, I don´t see it happening. First and foremost I think Petrucci would get SOOOOO bored just throwing power chords around all the time... I know I can get a bit bored, just imagine mr "I cant slow down my hand"!!!
"You want me to play what, Robert?"

Lets face it its so fast to slide down a hill and such a long walk back to the top at the moment where DT is at they have started their decline already one more bad move and I cant see them ever back to their former glory.

Concentrate on their next album would be the best idea I think and make it about them completely no Iron Maiden , No Metallica  and most certainly No The Who !!!  just Dream Theater trying to remember who they are and what their original mission objectives were will more than suffice .

That's the thing, they don't do covers "in their own way," they just do straight-up covers, poorly.

If they did a cover of TOMMY I would definitely buy it. I bloody loved that film! I think the song Tina Turner sang would sound great DTized.

I'm trying to imagine Tommy, but as a 'prog metal symphony' stripped of all feeling and originality, abridged, digitilized and dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century for the Ipod generation..

No, they probably shouldn't bother.

And while they're at it why don't they do Quadrophenia as well.

Not!

Nah, they should go for The Rite of Spring or something.

There's a thousand rock/metal versions of Rite of Spring out there.  They gotta do something a little more creative, like LTE's metal version of Rhapsody in Blue.
